18.01.2022 5 Exercises for your feet and ankles. By now, we’ve all gotten the news: combined with a healthy diet rich in a variety of fruits, vegetables, and lean protein, exercise is essential for wellbeing and longevity. So you’re doing cardiovascular exercise for heart health, and you’re lifting weights for bone health, but what about your feet? Here are five exercises you can do at home that we recommend to maintain and improve the strength and flexibility of your feet and ankles: 1....Always begin any exercise by stretching. Begin this program by holding on to the back of a chair for balance, then lifting one heel off the ground while pressing into the toes of the same foot. Lower that heel and repeat on the other foot. 2.Loosen your ankles. Sit in the chair, lift one foot off the ground and roll the ankle, first in one direction, then the other. Point your toes and flex your ankle. Be sure to repeat each warm-up exercise several times on both feet. 3.Practice coordination. Sitting or standing with your feet firmly on the floor, leave all 10 toes up. Press just the big toes down and up. Repeat 8 times. Then do the same with the pinkie toes 8 times. Then alternate big toes and pinky toes 8 times. 4.Strengthen the foot muscles and improve balance: Drop a sock on the floor and use your toes to grip and lift it off the floor. Hold for 10 seconds, then release. Repeat 5 times with each foot. 5.Finish your foot exercises with a mini at-home foot massage. Roll a golf ball or tennis ball under the ball of your foot and into the arch. Apply light pressure for about two minutes. This exercise can be helpful for arch pain, cramps, and pain associated with plantar fasciitis. If you have any concerns about the health and wellbeing of your feet, ankles, or lower legs, or if you’re experiencing discomfort or restricted mobility, it’s time to visit the podiatrist. Contact us at Mt keira podiatry on 02 4226 5705 for an appointment.
