25.01.2022 Each week the College Counsellors will be posting a wellbeing theme on the students Teams page. There will be tips and ideas for students to stay mentally healthy and connected with each other. Well keep parents updated on this theme via the Facebook page each week. This week we celebrated our laptop free lunches and the positive impact of going tech free on your brain!... Since students have been back at school this term, no-laptop-lunches has seen: students playing cards, board games and using their imaginations with each other students running around on the oval and playing in staff v student competitions students having more energy for lessons students making new friends This is a video that talks about what happens to our brains on technology, and how to take a break. https://youtu.be/5NqGvSKvDgI And here are some photos of our kids enjoying lap-top free lunches!

24.01.2022 As we enter into the final term of 2020 - a year like no other, we trust this finds you in good spirits and health and most importantly we would like to thank you for your ongoing support throughout 2020. For many years now we as a College have traditionally supported the St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal with food items, toys and gifts. This year, however, the call is to do things differently. Vinnies have asked for donations in the form of gift cards/money to support loc...al families and rebuild strength for families in need, from now right through to the New Year. Gifts cards are available from the major supermarkets and be loaded with value from $5. If you’re able to offer a donation, please forward that to your child’s PC teacher. If you’re unable to donate, that is ok. You can advocate for us by sharing our mission with a family member or friend. Even a mention on your social media would be helpful. Donations are welcome right through to the 3rd December. In times like this, we’re reminded of how interconnected we all are. Thank you for being part of our community. With you, we can make a difference! Stay safe and well, Theresa Duke Campus Minister

24.01.2022 Week 8s student wellbeing tip, focused on the importance of sleep. Good sleep is like a mental health superpower. We can all relate to having a bad day due to a lack of sleep. When teenagers get enough sleep, it's easier for them to manage their emotions and cope with stressful situations better. Its common to struggle to sleep. That's because sleep can be affected by many things from the food you eat to feeling worried and even using your phone before bed. ... Sohow much is enough? If youre aged between 1217 then 8 to 10 hours, sleep is ideal. We provided the students some ideas to develop a good sleep routine: Try going to sleep at the same time each night. Avoid caffeine 6 hours before bed. Try to reduce screen time an hour before sleep. Using an app like smiling mind to help you wind down and prepare for sleep. If you would like to learn more here are a couple of useful resources: Headspace video on benefits of sleep routine https://youtu.be/7dgYKql2IaQ Reachout website how to get a good nights sleep. https://au.reachout.com/arti/how-to-get-a-good-nights-sleep

23.01.2022 Guess what the staff at MMCP are missing the most? .... You!! All of our students together!!! Even though we are together online its just not the same as seeing your smiling faces walking around the College. But for now, to keep safe online is what we must do until we get to see each other back on MMCP grounds. Together the MMCP staff have created this special message for you to show that you are all in our thoughts. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bUKmoyzI-FE ... #weareallinthistogether #LeadbyExample #wemissyou #wewillgetthroughthis

21.01.2022 Language Rich Lifestyles Adding different activities to your lifestyle can help in developing your communication and language skills, as well as your general knowledge! Here are some ideas you can try: Listen Find an interesting podcast or talk-radio show and listen in your down-time. This might be around the house, in the car, on the bus or on a walk.... Watch Try watching things like documentaries, YouTube and the news. You might be surprised by the interesting things you can learn! Read Try to read every day for at least 15 minutes. It can be a good book, a different website or newspapers. Whatever works! Heres an example of simple ways to build your language: Will already knows a lot about skateboarding. He decides not to watch skateboard videos on YouTube because he wont learn much from them. Instead, he watches vlogs about travelling surfers, which teaches him about other countries and cultures. Before going to bed, he reads Tomorrow When The War Began a novel about teenagers who fight off an army that invades Australia. Will loves video games and technology, so he listens to the Tech Stuff podcast on the way to school. Cheers, MMCP Speech Pathology Team

21.01.2022 Two of our Grade 11 Indigenous students Summer and Caleb painted this artwork titled Meeting by The Pine. Artist Statement: The artwork represents the location of the school and the celebration of NAIDOC, representing meeting places for both women and men. The water hole streaming through the painting is to represent the Pine River closest to our school. ... Meeting by the Pine" is to represent the significance of meeting together as well as the significance of land and water in line with this year’s NAIDOC theme " , ".

21.01.2022 Today a group of our Year 11 students were given the opportunity to gather with other students from Marist colleges from across the region at the Marist Youth Ministry Forum. The theme for the forum was Meaning and Purpose, designed to help the students consider their hopes and dreams for the future, their values and beliefs, and the place for Gods calling in their lives. One particular question that generated impressive responses was: What type of world do you want to se...e? Responses included: pursuing vocational pathways where they can be of service to others (as teachers, nurses or psychologists), a shared vision for a changed world, and a common desire to be part of that change. Together they explored the prominent themes and questions that arise in preparation of what is possible in the days ahead!

21.01.2022 Squares for Charity is a great College initiative and over the last few years the College along with our wonderful volunteers have donated to St Vincent de Paul a collection of warm winter creations, for both children and adults eg, blankets, beanies, scarves. 2020 has been a crazy year however, this did not affect the enthusiasm and output from all involved. Firstly, I would like to apologise to the supporters of our "Squares for Charity" project, for not making contact ...before now. Second, a huge thank you to those of you who have continued to make beautiful contributions of squares, blankets, beanies and scraves, for us to hand over to St Vincent de Paul, this Friday 26th June. If you have any finished items that you can drop off before Friday, please leave them at the office with your name and a contact number. Unfortunately due to Covid we will not be able to have a presentation or hand over as many donations as we have in previous years, but I know that what we do give to them will be greatly appreciated, especially by members of the community who are in need. As in previous years I would like to continue making items for 2021 and with the cold, now is a great time to be knitting. So, if you can crochet or knit, and you can spare some time to help with our donations to Vinnies, please contact me by email or leave a message with the office ladies. If you prefer to knit or crochet scarves and beanies, or even blankets of any size, instead of the squares, please feel free to do so. We would like to donate as many warm winter creations, for both children and adults, as we can. All donations will be very much appreciated, and we look forward to everyones most valued contributions. Many thanks Kerry Smith Coordinator for "Squares for Charity"

20.01.2022 A well-being tip from the College Counsellors Sometimes it feels like the whole world is telling us to be grateful. It has become a bit of a catch cry, and places like K-Mart are making the most out of selling gratitude wall art and journals! There are a lot of pop psychology fads, but gratefulness actually has scientific evidence to back it up. Research shows that saying out loud 1-2 things each day that were grateful for, has long term benefits for our self-esteem and ...relationships with others. Our brains are primed to notice negative things around us, more so than positives,, so we have to make a conscious effort to identify the good. There are lots of ways you can do it over dinner every night, or in the car each morning on the way to school, everyone has to take turns to say one thing theyre grateful for. You could start a gratefulness Messenger group with close family or friends, or download an app to keep track of positive moments each day.

20.01.2022 Thursday 10 September is R U OK? Day and MMCP Students, Staff and Community Members are Encouraged to wear Yellow as a reminder that a conversation could change a life. 12.01.2022 This week, Wellbeing Wednesday focused on Empathy. Students have been encouraged to learn about empathy and start practising it more. Students learnt that empathy is about feeling with other people. Its the ability to understand and experience anothers feelings, and to respond in ways that help, not hinder. The four attributes of building empathy, according to researcher Theresa Wiseman, are:... 1. Being able to see the world as others see it; 2. Staying out of judgement; 3. Understanding anothers emotions and feelings; and 4. Communicating that to the person. Check out the video below and help your young person build their Empathy! The Importance of Empathy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UzPMMSKfKZQ

11.01.2022 The following link is a video and a opportunity to spend a few minutes to be a part of Mt Marias Anzac celebration for 2020. https://youtu.be/kULHEgibnXM During this surreal time in our lives when social distancing is extremely important to keep ourselves and others safe, we still commemorated ANZAC Day. Today a small group of senior students and staff laid a wreath at Anzac Park, a site of which MMCP has guardianship. A solemn occasions where Mrs OConnor and Mr Chapman... spoke to the students about how those young people would have felt leaving their families to go off to war and how reality would have been a lot different to the adventure they thought they were going to have. Tomorrow is Anzac Day and we invite all our families to come together and stand on your driveway at 6am tomorrow morning to commemorate ANZAC Day. We thank them for sharing their cultures, spiritualities and ways of living. We pay our respect to Elders past, present and future and may we continue to walk gently and respectfully together with each other. Together we celebrate NAIDOC week. #NAIDOCWEEK2020 #NAIDOC

09.01.2022 This morning during Pastoral Care MMCP staff and students took some time to acknowledge and recognise National Sorry Day. In the spirit of reconciliation, it is important that we reflect on this dark time in our Countrys history and consider the intergenerational trauma that may affect our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, staff, and community. Reconciliation is a journey for all Australians as individuals, families, communities, organisations and importantly as a nation. At the heart of this journey are relationships between the broader Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Australians are all #InThisTogether; every one of us has a role to play when it comes to reconciliation. #NRW2020 #InThisTogether2020

09.01.2022 We would like to thank all our Parents and Carers for their wonderful support and dedication during this very challenging time. Please remember we are only a phone call or email away if you need any assistance. It is also important to remember Parent Self-Care. Imagine a parent/carer as a watering can. Your job is to water and nurture your child, so that they grow. BUT that watering can has to be filled at some point its not magically replenished from a never-ending sou...rce of water! If your watering can is running off empty, there will be nothing left to help your child grow. It has to be filled, consciously, by acts of self care. So what are you doing to fill your watering can? Are you finishing that cup of tea? Taking that walk on your own? Reaching out to that old friend for a chat? Please have a think about how much you have in your tank, and take some time to fill it up! Follow the link below to find out what kind of self care replenishes your watering can. https://parents.au.reachout.com//what-kind-of-self-care-su From the counselling team.

09.01.2022 To mark the end of what has been an eventful NAIDOC Week, MMCP celebrated Torres Strait Islander culture by doing Floral Friday where we dressed in our brightest floral clothes. We also had our special NAIDOC Assembly where we announced Tyler as the winner of the 2020 MMCP NAIDOC Oz Tag player of the match and Coeviniar and Vika as the winners of MMCP’s NAIDOC Got Talent. We talked on the ...2020 NAIDOC theme of Always was, Always will be and did a special NAIDOC Liturgy where our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Engagement Officer Joel Wiggins and our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students presented the cross, a didgeridoo, clap sticks and cloths in the colours of the Aboriginal flag to the school. Overall NAIDOC Week 2020 was a successful week and we want to say a HUGE thank you to all who were involved. #NAIDOC2020 #NAIDOCWeek2020 #BCEschool

08.01.2022 Helping your Teenager cope with STRESS! Healthy teenagers are often moody, and their coping strategies can fluctuate regularly. This means that teenagers need help to manage their triggers and stress responses. When your teenager is displaying signs of stress, it is important to ask yourself WHY? they might be feeling stressed. Once you have identified and tamed the obvious triggers - with a sandwich and a nap - help them connect with their sources of stress by expl...oring what is going on for them. 1. Discuss Control: Explore things that we can and cant control. For example: we can control our hairstyle, we cant control anyone elses actions. 2. Help your teenager establish consistent routines, particularly around sleeping, remembering that teenagers need a lot of sleep to support all that brain development and bodily changes! 3. Use problem solving to explore and brainstorm ways that your teenager can combat their stress including social activities, exercise and hobbies, and scheduling in time to complete important tasks. The following link was shared with was shared with students to help them understand more about the bodys stress response and what is happening in their developing brains when faced with stress. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hnpQrMqDoqE&feature=youtu.be

02.01.2022 This Friday we will celebrate the Feast of St Marcellin Champagnat, a very significant day for us at Mt Maria as a Marist College. The theme of the week is based on the Marist characteristic of Family Spirit. We encourage all members of our College community to be proud of what it means to be a member of our Marist Family at Mt Maria College. Throughout the week, we will celebrate our Marist identity through a number of events. On Thursday, students have the option of wearin...g a French themed outfit (see image below for examples), to celebrate and highlight Marcellins French tradition. On Friday, we will celebrate the Feast of Champagnat with a PC liturgy and reflection on the significance of Champagnat Day.

01.01.2022 Are you looking for a new (and challenging!) way to spark communication at the dinner table/in the car/doing chores around the house? Have you heard of the game Answer a Question with a Question? Have you ever seen the TV comedy show Whose Line Is It Anyway?... If so, do you remember the game where two or more people talk to each other only speaking in questions? Wouldnt it be a strange rule if you werent allowed to answer a question with a statement? Dont you think it would be tricky? Are you clever enough keep the questions flowing? What sort of questions do you think would be easier or harder to answer with a question? Can you give it a go and let us know what you think? Cheers, MMCP Speech Pathology Team
