25.01.2022 Sue and I have been using our down time to tidy up and perhaps create some order in the History Room the Last few weeks. This involves signing in and hand sanitiser on entry and in between. Today though the hand sanitiser was no where to be seen... this is purchased by us and not provided by Council even though it is a Council building, and I am extremely disappointed that another user of the Hall should deem it their right to take what is not theirs, but something That was left in good faith for all to use as they entered the Memorial entrance. Needless to say the new bottle of sanitiser will not be left out to the same end. Rant over... we do look forward to opening our doors again soon.

22.01.2022 If you are at all interested in family history - this is for you! Thank You Cheryl!

19.01.2022 We learn from history!

18.01.2022 If you mention football to anyone local, the comment will be made about the competition between the horse events which occur regularly and the damage that does to the oval, making it less than safe for the players of the football matches. Mount Pleasant is now the Torrens Valley Football Club, having amalgamated with Mount Torrens in 1997, and on their website it states that their home ground is Mount Pleasant and yet we see them here for very little of the season, and Mount ...Torrens seems to be their base. I have not been a follower of football and certainly not at the local level; having a family of girls who played netball may be one of the reasons for that. Netball was always played on the Friday night, when my family played, unlike a lot of competitions which followed the football matches. Football in 2020 though, may not be on the agenda but in 1919 the formation of an Association was discussed with the townships of Mount Pleasant, Gumeracha, Springton and Birdwood being included. After a match in May 1919 a meeting was held to discuss the proposal and an offer was made by a renowned player of the day, Mr Whittle to give instruction in the physical side of the game, and the advantages that can be gained by playing to the Young Men’s Club. It was in 1919 that the Old Talunga Park development began. I assumed that this was the beginning of football at Mount Pleasant, but it appears not, with this article regarding a match between Greenock and a combined team played at Mount Pleasant (I am not sure where this ground would have been). The hours travelled in order to play a game certainly deserved a stop or two at the local hotels, don’t you think???? See more

18.01.2022 We are planning on holding a film night during May's History Festival. Lots of people have told us how much they used to enjoy going to the pictures, so we thought it might be a good thing to do. Will you join us?

17.01.2022 For those who were unable to attend the Red Cross Garden Party - or who didn't have time to check it out - we will have the display of the history of the Red Cross in SA in the hall, today only. This fabulous exhibit was curated by, and is on loan from, The History Trust of SA. Pictured are Les Fisher, John Wymark and Hartley Ramm from the Men's Shed, who helped us stage the exhibit at the Garden party.

16.01.2022 In June 1950 the SA Sheep Dog Trials were held at Mount Pleasant. Do you recognise any of the helpers who provided food throughout the day? Mr D. Learmonth of Mount Pleasant won the competition with his dog Queen. Mrs A. L. Starkey and Miss Joy Starkey were the convenors for the committee of women who catered.

15.01.2022 The History Room is open today! It’s a lovely day to be out.

12.01.2022 Always something happening in the History Room! Today we are photographing receipts from the early 1900’s. A lot of our time is spent digitising the collection for future generations. Do you have any old paperwork you think might interest us? Why not let Paula Bartsch make the decision to keep or not to keep for you? There are all sorts of things that tell us a lot about how people lived back then.

12.01.2022 Today some poppy fairies went down to veil the hall for Anzac Day. How will you be commemorating Anzac Day? There is a movement about, asking people to stand in their driveways to observe Anzac Day in lieu of the traditional Dawn Service. If you are thinking of doing this, why not share with us? This Anzac Day will be an important part of our social history, and we are keen to record what we can, whether it be by selfies taken in the dawn light, or words written. Perhaps you'd like to take a video when reciting the Ode. Whatever way you choose to commemorate, we are sure that it will lose little of its significance. Thank You.

06.01.2022 Just a little more S.A. History on Show. Crystal Brook R.S.L. Home of Arthur Sullivan V.C.... Born in Crystal Brook on the 27th of November 1896. Sullivan w...as 22 years old, and a Corporal in the 45th Battalion during the North Russia Relief Force when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross. On 10 August 1919, at Sheika River, North Russia, the platoon to which Corporal Sullivan belonged, after fighting a rearguard covering action, had to cross the river by means of a narrow plank, and during the passage an officer and three men fell into a deep swamp. Without hesitation, Corporal Sullivan, under intense fire, jumped into the river and rescued all four, bringing them out singly. But for this gallant action, the men would undoubtedly have drowned, as all ranks were exhausted and the enemy was less than 100 yards away. 06.01.2022 "I focused on cohesion in my design, as all prop pieces are run-down, damaged, or old-looking. This is in keeping with the theme of Mrs Lovett's filthy characte...r and successfully creates the environment of the run-down areas of London during the 19th century." Ashley Miron on the set pieces she designed for Stephen Sondheim's musical tragedy Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. 06.01.2022 The signs are up to remind people of the Mount Pleasant Show on 21st March 2020 so a reminder of a Show of the past is appropriate, I would think... we still ha...ve one of the largest Agricultural Shows in South Australia and you can see much here that you can see at the Royal Adelaide Show, but on a smaller scale, so there is a chance you can actually see most of it!
