22.01.2022 There are more than 5800 satellites still remain in orbit but only 2300 of them still work. Space junk is a big problem, and there is more than 8800 tonnes of human-made objects are orbiting Earth at speeds of up to 25,000 km/hr. Mt Stromlo's Dr Doris Grosse explains the growing problem, and what we are working on here to solve it. While space is big and no one knows when catastrophic collisions could occur, one thing is sure: our space environment is neither safe, secure, ...nor sustainable and time is ticking away. Mt Stromlo Observatory is using an astronomy technique called adaptive optics (space lasers) to measure the shape, composition, orientation and spin from a satellite in space. Read more about it!

21.01.2022 The schedule is approximate: -- 7:00pm Dr Brad Tucker: "Explosions and Collisions in Space" (kid friendly) The Universe is full of the biggest and most powerful objectsand sometimes they explode and collide. Brad will talk about how active our Universe is from exploding stars to colliding galaxies and black holes. There is even crashing space stations and powerful space lasers!... -- 7:25pm Stargazing with Dr Brad Tucker -- 7:40pm Professor Naomi McClure-Griffiths: "Getting to know the neighbours: The Magellanic Clouds" The Magellanic Clouds are nearby galaxies visible with the naked eye from the Southern Hemisphere. As so-called "dwarf galaxies, the Magellanic Clouds are dragged about through their interaction with our much more massive galaxy, the Milky Way. I’ll describe how radio telescopes like the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder and Parkes are helping us understand the past lives of the Magellanic Clouds and maybe even predict the future! -- 8:15pm Wrap up

12.01.2022 Thanks to everyone who came out today. We hope you found some treasures! Everything has now been rehomed but we have some fantastic views if you'd still like to visit!

11.01.2022 You may notice a new laser coming from Mount Stromlo Observatory! Situated on top of the mountain, it was a seven-year project to build the laser system by scientists and engineers at Mount Stromlo Observatory along with Electro Optic Systems (EOS), RMIT University, Japan and the USA as part of the Space Environment Research Centre (SERC). This laser will start to clean up space junk! The orange laser, which is visible, removes the haziness caused by turbulence in the atmosp...here, like an artificial star to help the telescope guide and move. Then a second, infrared laser which is invisible to the human eye, will track and de-orbit space junk by pushing it into the Earth's atmosphere and having it burn up safely.

11.01.2022 If you'd like to take advantage of the great weather we're having, we have availability for private stargazing sessions this evening. See the link below for further information about our private site tours and stargazing sessions, which includes prices and current guidelines for COVID-19. All proceeds help fund our public outreach and education programs. For more information or to book, please email us: [email protected]

10.01.2022 The schedule is approximate: -- 7:00pm Professor Penny King: Lift Off to Mars Exciting News About the Red Planet Why do scientists send space craft to Mars? What have we found and what do we hope to find? When will humans get to go? Join Prof. Penny King for a virtual journey to Mars!... -- 7:35pm Virtual stargazing with Dr Brad Tucker -- 7:50pm Professor Kate Reynolds: "Mutiny in space? Team risks and opportunities for spaceflight missions." What makes a highly effective space crew? How do we assess team functioning? What happens if things go wrong? Rather than only focusing on the selection and training of individual astronauts, in this talk the study of teams and gaps in knowledge are outlined. -- 8:25pm Wrap up Please post your questions in the comments below.

03.01.2022 Happy International Dark Sky Week! During this time many people across the globe are reflecting on their night time environment and how they contribute to it. Light pollution is becoming an increasingly major issue as it affects many aspects of our life and the world around us including our health, animals, our view of the natural night sky and energy waste. Light pollution is increasing at 2x rate of population growth and 83% of the global population lives under a light-po...lluted sky. - International Dark Sky Association You can contribute to limiting light pollution by: - Turning off outdoor lights when not in use (or change them to sensor lights) - Face lights down towards the ground - Place shades on outdoor lights - Talk about light pollution with your friends and family and check out the International Dark Sky website for more info: https://www.darksky.org

03.01.2022 We’d like to clear some space in our store room to make room for new things. As such, we have a number of books that we would like to find a new home if possible. They are on many different astronomy-related topics, aimed at a range of reading levels, and are a bit outdated due to their age. There are also some (very classic) posters and assorted knick knacks. Goods will be set up outside the Mount Stromlo Observatory Visitor Centre on Wednesday the 9th of December from 10:00am until 4:00pm for people to help themselves. Please make use of the provided hand sanitiser.

02.01.2022 Fancy looking at some stars tonight ? We have availability for a private stargazing session at 10:00pm this evening.
