24.01.2022 Happy Friday from all the team at Mudgee Vet Hospital, some tips to keep your pet cool this weekend... 1.. Try to keep your pet indoors on very hot days. Being indoors where it is usually cooler will make a significant difference, particularly if you have air-conditioning or fans. Like humans, different animals prefer different temperatures, so being able to provide different temperature zones around the house will also help your pet find where it is most c...omfortable. If your pet must be outside, be sure to provide plenty of shade for all times of day as the sun moves around. 2. Don’t wet your pet completely to cool it down, particularly if it is already hot or is a thick-coated breed, as this might just trap heat against its body and will increase the risk of moist skin infections. Instead, let the pet rest on a damp towel to cool its belly and feet or, if possible, let it lie in a shallow children's wading pool. 3. Plan outdoor exercise, such as walks, for early morning or evening when it is cooler. If possible, walk your pet in shady or grassy areas where there will be less heat from the pavement. Don't take your pet a on a long walk immediately after it has been bathing or swimming. Water softens the animal's footpads, making them more prone to burning, especially when it is walking on a hot pavement. Exercising might also cause the pet's temperature to rise and heat might be trapped against the body. 4. Don’t take your pet in a car as temperatures can rise by as much as 10 degrees in as little as an hour. Simply opening the window slightly does not prevent this temperature rise and pets cannot sweat to cool down. 5. Make sure your pet has plenty of clean, cool water and, where possible, provide ice cubes to chew on or lick. 23.01.2022 Microchip your Pet This beautiful cat was found in Mudgee and reunited with his owner due to having a microchip. His owner lived in Orange and had been missing his cat for several months, he thought he mustve gotten lost or didnt want to think of any other alternatives... It is a positive story, and we cant stress the importance of a microchip as the owner was ever so grateful for his return. A microchip is a permanent method of elect...ronic identification. The chip itself is very small about the size of a grain of rice and is implanted subcutaneously (just under the skin) between the shoulder blades at the back of your pets neck. Each chip has a unique number that is detected using a microchip scanner. The microchip number is recorded on a microchip database registry with details about the animal and owner. Pet owners need to ensure their contact details are recorded on the database against their pets microchip number. Should your pet wander or become lost, vets, animal shelters and local councils can scan your pet for a microchip and contact you via the database. 23.01.2022 Dangers of Rat Bait Dogs are renowned to love Rat Bait, so we urge you to try and be diligent when it comes to your pets around it. Signs they may have ingested are: ... Obvious external signs of haemorrhage (dependent on where the bleeding is; for example bruising, bloody faeces or urine, nose bleeds, vomiting blood) Lethargy Weakness Wobbliness Loss of appetite Distended abdomen from bleeding into the abdomen Coughing, wheezing, or difficulty breathing Bulging of eyes from bleeding behind the eyes If your dog does digest rat bait, please know we can treat this, we can administer a test in house, if you have any concerns, please contact us and book an appointment on 6372 2105. If left untreated they can lose a vast amount of blood, that they will need a blood transfusion, and if left further with no treatment, it could become fatal. See more

They help control her blood pressure, regulate the bloodstream, produce important hormones, enzymes, and red blood cells, as well as remove metabolic waste from the blood. If her kidneys arent able to do their job properly, this can lead to significant & life-threatening problems, such as kidney failure. Catching chronic kidney disease (CKD) before sympto...ms become obvious is important, because typically signs do not appear until 75 percent of kidney function has been lost. Make sure your cat gets regular check-ups. The sooner kidney disease is diagnosed, the more time you have to address the underlying cause or slow the diseases progression. 21.01.2022 BLADDER STONES This poor pooch was having trouble urinating, he was straining and passing only small amounts of bloody urine (a common sign). Our Vet Dr Lisa Kennedy did a urinalysis and then an X-ray as she was suspicious it may be stones during the consultation from the dogs behaviour and from the information from the pet owners. Diagnosis was indeed correct and ultimately needed bladder surgery to remove the stones. This furry critter... is doing swimmingly well after surgery and in much better health. Its difficult, its challenging, and its filled with both happy and sad moments, stressful situations, and pleasant success. Its true that the veterinary profession isnt for everyone as it requires harsh training and education to reach the point where you start working on your own and when... the real problems begin, with you being the only one to solve them. Veterinarians are passionate and compassionate. Our veterinarians enjoy great passion both for the job and their patients, which helps them provide the best veterinary care. They are also compassionate not only to the animals but to the owners as well. They use the time during your appointment to soothe and calm them while searching for a solution for the problems of the patient. They possess skills for making quick decisions, most emergency cases can be resolved only by making quick decisions and having the nerve to implement them. This is closely related to possessing great leadership skills. They need perfect manual dexterity, from lifting and restraining large animals to tricky and fine surgical manoeuvres, the arms and hands of a vet professional are the second most needed weapon (after their impeccable brain) in everyday work. A great vet possesses great communication skills which she/he uses to effectively talk with the pet owners in order to draw important information and clearly explain diagnostic findings and treatment plans. 17.01.2022 Meet Teddy After a wonderful positive surgery, Teddy came back to visit us to get his sutures removed. We recommend you return with your pet after surgery, approx 10-14 days to remove sutures and so we can sight your pet to ensure he/she is healing well and on the mend.

14.01.2022 After Surgery Care There are some simple guidelines to follow, to ensure your pet has the best recovery. Keep your pet restrained and quiet, as the effects of the anaesthetic can take some time to wear off completely.... Keeping them quiet for 10 14 days is essential to allow any wound/s to heal. Food and water should be limited to small portions only on the night after surgery. Follow any dietary instructions that the vet has provided. Ensure all post-surgical medications (if any) are administered as per the label instructions. Ensure your pets rest area is clean to avoid infection. Check the incision at least twice daily for any signs of infection or disruption (eg. bleeding, swelling, redness or discharge). Contact the vet immediately if these symptoms appear. Do not wait to see if they will spontaneously resolve. Prevent your pet from licking or chewing the wound. An Elizabethan Collar should be worn, unless your Vet has advised otherwise. A single chew can remove the careful stitching with disastrous effects. A recheck / suture (stitch) removal is scheduled for 10 -14 days after surgery. This allows us to assess the healing process and remove any sutures. Sutures should only be removed by a vet or a vet nurse, please do not remove the sutures yourself. 14.01.2022 Meet Winnie Winnie was minding her own business when a pesky little Bee came and stung her! Unfortunately Winnies lip swelled up and her owner brought her straight to us. Within minutes Winnie was assessed and treated and made a full recovery.

13.01.2022 Deciduous Teeth Dogs have two sets of teeth in their lifetime. There are 28 deciduous teeth, also known as their baby teeth, puppy milk teeth, or puppy teeth, and 42 permanent teeth, also known as their adult teeth. If the deciduous teeth do not make their own way out, they can sometimes become retained or stuck. If not treated, they can rub against other teeth, wearing away the enamel and weakening the tooth. If the retained tooth is a ...lower canine, the permanent lower canine is forced to grow on the inside of the lower jaw and its tip usually grows towards the roof of the mouth, causing pain and damage which makes it difficult for your dog to eat. Early extraction in these cases will usually allow the adult teeth to move into their proper positions. In addition to regular tooth brushing, it is important to check your puppys mouth every week until about seven to eight months of age to ensure that his teeth are growing normally. 12.01.2022 Food Sensitivities Allergic reaction or food intolerance the pets immune system responds to a particle in the food causing an inflammatory reaction. The exact cause is not completely understood and it is not easy to distinguish between true allergic reactions and food intolerances. Similar reactions can occur in people: eg. lactose intolerance, allergies to MSG or other preservatives. Food allergies can develop even when a pet has been fed the same diet... for a long period of time. Incidence of Food Reactions? Food reactions are responsible for approximately 10-15% of all allergic skin diseases in dogs and cats. It is the 3rd most common itchy skin disease in dogs. It is the 2nd most common itchy skin disease in cats. What are the Signs and Symptoms? The symptoms of food allergy are similar to other allergies. Symptoms most commonly include - Itchiness, redness of the skin, licking feet, ear infections particularly yeast infections. Less common, though still can show signs - vomiting and/or diarrhoea, excessive gas or flatulence. 11.01.2022 Why did the Turtle cross the road? If you see a turtle on the road, move it far off to the side in the direction it was heading, or to the nearest habitable water source. Every turtle matters, and in late spring and summer, it is often females crossing roads to find nesting sites. Turtles do have an awareness of their local landscape, so relocating them far away from the 'territory' you find them in can make them more vulnerable.... Injured turtles: If you find an injured or sick turtle, contact WIRES for advice. Turtles are surprisingly resilient, and a cracked shell can be repaired - there have even been cases of eggs successfully incubated from females hit by cars. If you find a hatchling, release it in the nearest habitable water source; hatchlings are completely self-sufficient and do not need a parent. Never transport turtles in water, as they can drown.
