17.01.2022 Activist Nyi Nyi Aung Htet Naing, 23, asked ‘How many bodies does the UN need to take action?' the day before he was killed in a protest in #Myanmar. It’s time for the international community to go beyond statements of concern and to take long-overdue action. Take action now: Sign a letter to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Senator Marise Payne, asking her to call on the UN to act now. https://www.amnesty.org.au/act-/myanmar-targeted-sanctions/

10.01.2022 Afternoon tea and letters Imagine being thrown in jail for doing your job. That’s what happened to respected Algerian journalist and TV presenter, Khaled Drareni, who was arrested in March last year while covering a demonstration. Supporters around the world wrote letters and signed petitions calling for his release and after 11 months he was freed. There are many more like Khaled who need us to put pen to paper or digits to the device to call for justice on their behalf.... Tomorrow we are meeting over late afternoon tea to do just that. We will provide: case notes and sample letters for both overseas and Australian cases, guidance from experienced writers, good company, hot drinks and delicious food. If you have a device to write emails please bring that. If technology is not your thing we will have paper and pens. The details: Date and time: Tuesday, 27th April, any time from 4.30 to 6.30 pm Address: For details text/phone Heather on 0432 081 742, or reply to this email. RSVP by tomorrow at midday. We'd love to see you there.

06.01.2022 Letter-writing does work Letters addressing human rights injustices are the mainstay of Amnesty International’s work across the world. Journalist and President of Niger Bloggers Association, Samira Sabou, had been locked up on spurious defamation charges. She was released from prison in July, following calls from Amnesty International.... "I don’t forget about Amnesty International who highlighted the incoherence related to my arrest. I have been touched by the solidarity and the support I received from all corners of the globe." SAMIRA SABOU If you have fallen out of the habit of writing persuasive messages but would like to regain that skill we are here to help. On Tuesday, April 27th we will be holding one of our Mudgee at home letter-writing sessions. We will provide sample letters for both Australian and overseas cases with some of our experienced writers on hand to guide you. Because many countries are still not receiving international mail most of our writing at present is via email. So if you have a smart phone or another portable device please bring that. Not into that technology? We will have samples of Australian letters that you can hand-write. The details: Date / time: Tuesday, April 27th, any time from 4:30 to 6:30 pm. Location: Contact us for the address. (0432 081 742 / 02 6372 6177; [email protected]) What we will provide: Afternoon tea, sample letters and case notes, paper, guidance from our experienced writers. What to bring: A device on which you can write emails, if you have one.
