24.01.2022 A VERY SPECIAL TREE Caroline Rattey (16 years old) arrived in South Australia on the Vesta in December 1856 from Poland with her Aunt and Uncle on board. They s...ettled at New Hoffnungsthal. They were illiterate. In 1857 Carolines uncle and aunt moved to Black Springs (now known as Springton), but Caroline stayed at Hoffnungsthal as she had taken a job as a maid with a man named Johann Leske. On Wednesday 4th November 1857 Johann Leskes father Samuel, died in an accident when the horses pulling his wagon bolted. On the day of his funeral, Caroline was alone at the Leske farm house minding Johanns two young children. A man knocked on the door of the farm house, saying he was looking for lost cattle. It is thought that he saw Samuel Leskes wife take a large amount of money from her husbands clothing after the fatal accident, and thinking that it may be hidden in the house, was trying to steal it. Caroline told him she had not seen any lost cattle and tried to end the conversation, but he attacked her. He dragged her close to the cow shed, where he found a rope with which he hung her by the neck from a tree. He then stabbed her above the left breast and went inside to burgle the house. Caroline was of sturdy build, and the tree was flexible so that her weight let her feet reach the ground. She freed herself and ran about a kilometre to a neighbour for help before she collapsed. The doctor later thought that the reason that she had not bled to death was her plumpness; the fatty tissues sealed the wound. Carolines attacker was never caught, but the money wasnt stolen either; Samuels wife had taken it to the funeral, sewn into her clothing. Not long after the attack, Caroline joined her aunt and uncle at Black Springs ( Springton ) , where she met Friedrich Herbig. She was 18 years old when they married on 27th July 1858 Friedrich took her to live in his tree home, which was the trunk of an old Australian Red Gum tree that had previously been hollowed out by Aborigines. He had lived in it since he arrived in South Australia from Germany in 1855. The tree was convenient for him as it was on the banks of a stream and 1.5 km from the dairy where he worked. It was roughly 20 feet? ( Ive got different measurements from different history sites on this tree! Lol so Im not sure what the correct numbers are, but it was big enough! Lol ) at its base and the tree is estimated to be about 300-500 years old. The hollow opening faced away from the direction of rain. Caroline had the first 2 of her 16 children in the tree home before moving into a hut that Friedrich had built to accommodate their expanding family. This Hardy Pioneer outlived her husband by 40 years and survived until she was in her 90s. The deprivations suffered by the woman depicted in Henry Lawsons classic short story, "The Drovers wife " seemed of little consequence compared to the life of this amazing Pioneer, Caroline Herbig. Caroline Herbig died 19 March 1927 ( Source of information - Barossa Australia Ian Ferguson- Outback Stories German Australia Photos - http://www.heritagebuildingsofsouthaustralia.com.au/bar17.h and German Australia) Tree is on the National Trusts Register of Significant Trees for historic significance and colonial occupation and is located on Eden Valley Rd, Springton SA Herbig family reunions are held at the tree, usually every five years. I HAVE to visit this tree one day!! Kylie
21.01.2022 A FAMILY GHOST HIDDEN SPIRIT (Tas.) writes: A family I have known for several years has a family ghost a white-headed woman who appears in the dead of night by the bedside of each member of the family in turn. The one who does not see the ghost is the one to die next. The ghost holds out the fingers of her right hand to indicate the number of months left to the person . The ghostly visitor carries a candle in her left hand. She touches the sleepers face, and compels him to wake up. Then, slowly, her fingers go up. After that she looks at the lighted candle for a moment, and blows it out. Weekly Times (Melbourne, Vic. : 1869 - 1954), Saturday 26 August 1939, page 43

19.01.2022 Its story time THE BRIDE OF KANUNGRA NSW This story is going to take you back in time of the late 18th Century ... Hidden from the stock route that connects the Valley of the Wollondilly with the Western Plains of N.S.W. By way of Oberon, Ginkin and Tarana, is the Isolated kidney of rock known as Kanungra Plateau. From the summit, reached by iron ladders, is a glorious view of the far Blue Mountains, and from the northern end the grandeur of Kanungra Gorge opens into a cavernous maw beneath. The owner of one of the big herds of cattle that roamed free in the valleys, arranged that his honeymoon trip should be to the plateau and that the wedding guests should lodge in the caves, of which he had knowledge. The romantic suggestion appealed to the bride and her friends. By pack-horses, the timber for a dancing platform was taken to the summit, and the floor laid in the largest of the caves. Immediately after the wedding ceremony, the party proceeded by the torturous cattle pad that crosses the Kowmung River seven times in five miles. The evening was spent joyously. The guests danced till daylight, and at dawn, the bridegroom took his bride to the top of the plateau, to the edge of the precipice, with its sheer drop of 500ft. to the river, lashed and broken on the granite outcrops. The view fascinated the girl, who became lost in admiration of the blue hills far away, with old Mt. Colong sentinelling the peaks. "What a lovely place to see by moonlight!" she exclaimed. Early in the moon of next night, she stole away from the dancers, who were still keeping up the feast. For half an hour she was not missed. Then her husband sought her. Failing in his quest, he alarmed the camp. Through the long night the search continued, without result. He had forgotten her suggestion of the view from the plateau by moonlight, and did not recall it till the following day. His rush for the ladders was the signal for a movement to the summit. They found her a huddle of white on the rocks 500 feet down. She had ventured too near the edge and Kanungra had taken another victim. The body was raised, placed on a packhorse, and the mourning party returned to Oberon. The bride of a day was buried in the shade of the giant gums that bordered the little cemetery. Next day the bridegroom was missed. A search party found him dead beside his battered horse, within a few yards of the spot where the body of his wife had lain. He was buried with her. Today, the legend is that every year on a night in September, when the moon is full, a man on a wildly galloping horse rides to the edge of the Plateau and over it. 17.01.2022 Believe it or not. This is a family heirloom of mine. My great grandfather was a copper smith back in the late 1800s. He made a living making hand made copper ...coffins. Since it was his own trade and not many people could afford them, he had to travel the country to sell them. This was one of his scale models he made to show potential customers. I have done so much research and still have never found anything like it. Addition: Last pic I added is also something he made. This is our family album. Case is also hand made out of copper. Pic is it sitting in a recliner so you can see how huge this is. My great grandfather spent most of his life also tracing our families heritage. He was able to trace it back to 1566 and also show we are direct descendants of a famous Mohawk Indian chief named Joseph Brant. Could you imagine how hard it would be to trace all that info back then?! UPDATE!!! My wife went and bought bananas for scale so here you go!!!
