25.01.2022 ARCHERY What is it for? To loosen the upper to mid thoracic spine (between your shoulder blades)... Who would benefit? Anyone who sits for prolonged periods, does a lot of driving/lifting/carrying, gets tight through the neck and shoulders or spends time bent forward. How do you do it? -Sit up tall and point your arms out in front of you at shoulder height. -Keep looking forward as you draw one arm back behind you like you are pulling the string of a bow and arrow (keeping your shoulder relaxed (pressed down) throughout -pull forwards through the front arm and backwards through the bent elbow until you feel the stretch in to your shoulder blades - return to the start and repeat with the other arm How many do i do? Start with 5 on each side (each arm) and build up to 10 3 times a day

25.01.2022 Beginning of the Sporting Season. As we edge towards the start of winter sports we have some tips to keep you moving and progressing well into and throughout the season. 1. Check your equipment- ... Ensure you have well fitted protective garments and supportive shoes appropriate to the surface your playing on 2. Tailor a program to train your body into the sport you intend to play- Though you may have played your chosen sport last season, your body will decondition during off season and does require sport specific strengthening to ensure you don't end up injured 3. EASE BACK IN- Unless your pre season was spent training well and progressing towards game play; Don't attempt to play at 100% intensity for 100% of your first game of the season. You're body will fatigue throughout play and although you may not get injured it will take your body a longer period of time to recover- this means any training you intend to do throughout the week will be compounding this muscle overload which may lead to injury in subsequent weeks 4. Ensure Recovery- Give your body the TLC it requires post play. Cool down properly by slowly lowering your heart rate through lighter activity, rehydrate and lightly stretch any large muscle groups of the body you have been working 5. DON'T START ANYTHING NEW- (unless you have trained appropriately in the lead up to start of season) This includes jumping up a division or level in your current sport, if your body is not trained ready for this change in intensity you run the risk of overload and muscle tearing 6. Get yourself checked- If you do end up with a niggle or injury during play, ensure you have it assessed or checked by a medical professional. This will ensure you do not develop a chronic injury and also may enlighten you of any functional concerns that you could change to ensure no further injury in the future. Most importantly enjoy the experience and look after your body. Our team at Mudgeephysio. wish all our budding athletes a great start to the season and hope we don't have to see you through the doors of the practice (though we're always here if you need us).

16.01.2022 ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) injuries are an extremely common injury we hear a lot about in the media. What can we do to prevent these types of injuries? Netball Australia Physios have come up with a warm up routine that acts as a means of preventing ACL and even ankle injuries. Worth a read for any netball players, young or old, recreational through to the professional athlete.

10.01.2022 FREE information session for pregnant women to be held on Saturday 5th March at 12pm at mudgeephysio. Did You Know? Instability and back or pelvic pain is NOT an inevitable part of pregnancy. ... Recent studies show it is related to weakness of the pelvic floor and deep core muscles NOT an unavoidable hormonal change. Strengthening these muscles correctly can prevent or lessen the severity of pre-natal and post-natal back and pelvic pain. Incontinence, or bladder leakage, is NOT an inevitable part of pregnancy or the result of giving birth. In fact, ignoring mild incontinence can lead to increasing loss of bladder control over our lifetime. Once again strengthening the pelvic floor muscles correctly is essential in the treatment and prevention of incontinence. BUT More than 30% of people will activate these muscles incorrectly without proper guidance, and this number is even higher in pre- and post-natal women. At mudgeephysio. we understand that pre- and post-natal bodies operate a little differently and are trained to assess and correct pelvic floor muscle function during this time. We want to help you avoid instability, pain and incontinence in your pregnancy, which is why mudgeephysio. is offering FREE pelvic floor information sessions for pregnant women. So come along and let us help you help yourself! To sign up for a free pelvic floor information session or for more information phone mudgeephysio. on 6372 4033.

06.01.2022 Shoulder Impingement The shoulder is a very mobile and versatile joint and, as such, is built for mobility and not stability. The shoulder requires good co-ordination of the surrounding muscles to avoid overuse and irritation. The upper back (Thoracic Spine) and position of the shoulder blade against the ribs, play a large role in the position and function of the shoulder and can impact on its muscular co-ordination. ... Impingement may occur when structures such as the rotator cuff tendons and fat pad (Bursa) become overused due to poor positioning and control. Physiotherapy is very effective in the treatment and management of shoulder pain and impingement and to help improve your posture and daily activities to decrease pain and prevent recurrence.
