25.01.2022 KOMAL'S STORY Nine-year-old Komal loves energetic games that keep her active. Her happy smiles and pleasant manners make her a joy to be around. She has a special knack for motivating others, a rare quality in someone as young as her. Komal, her older sister Kirti and little brother Surya were born into an impoverished and dysfunctional family. Her father was addicted to alcohol and could not hold down a job. He was verbally and physically abusive to his wife and children. On...e day he moved out of the house and refused to provide any financial support to his children. Komal's mother soon found work as a housemaid. The income was meagre, and she had to choose between feeding her children and providing them with an education. She brought Komal and Kirti to Mukti. Here her children could have an education, a safe home and nutritious, regular meals. The girls became part of the Mukti family and began attending school. Komal had difficulty speaking clearly; probably the psychological effect of the verbal and physical violence she had endured at a tender age. The stable environment, prayerful atmosphere and the love of all at Mukti had a profound effect on her speech. She's now always chatting with someone and cracking jokes. Komal and Kirti love Mukti and have many friends here. They have a positive future ahead of them and both have ambitions to become police officers in order to help the needy and ensure justice for all.

12.01.2022 What do you do with 140 teenage girls during holiday time? Have a youth camp of course! But this is in a COVID-19 lockdown! That didn’t stop us in India. For five days during June, a youth camp was held on the Mukti campus. Being forced to stay home has been frustrating for the teenage girls, when they are full of energy and enthusiasm. So youth camp was held with games, cultural activities and cooking competitions. Dr. Ajita Kuberji, Dr. Deepika, and Dr. Lorraine Francis led some studies addressing spiritual needs and many of the girls were challenged by these. They wanted to put away old thinking patterns and behaviours and have a closer relationship with God, as well as show greater consideration of others. Camp, although different this year, will long be remembered as a highlight of COVID days.

06.01.2022 Mukti Australia’s National Director, Glenda de Jager, has a special message of thanks for the generous response to our special appeal for needy families in India during the current pandemic.

Their survival depends on the generosity of supporters like you. AU$15 can provide a family with a basic grocery parcel containing rice, flat rice, grain, sugar, oil, and other staple food items, sufficient to feed one family for 10 to 15 days. Right now, there are 153 children who, along with their families, are in urgent need of our assistance to ensure their survival. Time is of the essence please give a donation today! 03.01.2022 *DAYAMANTI - A GRATEFUL HEART. As Vishu, one of the social workers at Mukti Mission, was visiting patients in the Mukti hospital, *Damayanti excitedly showed her a drawing she had coloured in so beautifully and neatly. Damayanti explained, This is my pastime. I like to colour, and I find joy and peace in whatever I do. I can see only with my right eye and I am too weak to spend much time outdoors. Curious to test her memory power, Vishu asked Damayanti how old she was. Wi...thout hesitation, she replied that she would be 90 years old in March. Vishu’s reaction was, Wow! What a blessing! Let us celebrate your birthday. Damayanti refused, saying that she was not a young girl to celebrate her birthday, but she was blessed and grateful to God for His work in her life. In 2016, she enrolled in a study course at Mukti, alongside much younger students. It was difficult for her to hear her lecturers and write, yet she did not give up and attended classes every week. After two years, she proudly walked up the stage to receive her graduation certificate - an inspiration to her young classmates. The youngest in a family of 10 children, Damayanti came to Mukti when she was 30 years old and 7 months pregnant. Her relative had deceived her and abandoned her because she was going to be a single mother. She came to Mukti for shelter and to hide from the stigma unfortunately attached to unmarried mothers. She bore a baby girl and raised her in Mukti. Her daughter later married, had children of her own, and is now settled in an Indian city. Instead of living in fear and uncertainly, Damayanti has been able to live a fulfilled life as part of the big family at Mukti. She had studied up to 10th Standard, later completing courses in kindergarten training and adult education. Whatever education she acquired she loved imparting to others. In her younger years, Damayanti cared for the infants in the nursery and taught the toddlers in a Sunday programme. Damayanti says she often wonders about how her life would have turned out had she not been directed to Mukti. She is grateful to God and to those who serve at Mukti Mission. *Name changed to protect the vulnerable.

03.01.2022 Krishanthan was one of the first boys to enrol in the Child Assistance Programme in Hatton, run by our Sri Lankan partner, Wings of Hope. He was 12 years old, studying in Year 7 when he joined us in December 2015, and has remained in the programme. In December last year, when Krishanthan faced his Ordinary Level Examination (O/L), he would attend the compulsory classes held after school every day and then race to attend the programme to get extra tuition and help from our tea...chers. We proudly celebrate with Krishanthan and his family, as he passed his O/L examination with outstanding results, qualifying to continue to Advanced Study level. His mother is delighted! She was the strongest force behind her son, encouraging him never to give up. She is an excellent example to the other mothers, as is Krishanthan to the other children. He is on his way to breaking the cycle of poverty in his family, and we are proud of his achievement. A very big ‘Thank You’ also to his sponsor for her prayers and financial support.

02.01.2022 Merry Christmas from Lorraine Francis
