25.01.2022 An oldie but a goldie - If design isn't to be mandated, can the building codes be managed. "Thing is, the person in charge is still the person incentivised to skimp."

23.01.2022 As part of a background scoping study for a technical design guide for Sunshine Coast Council, I asked the experts what makes Sunny Coast buildings climate-responsive, liveable, affordable, resilient and sustainable. All the locals I interviewed nominated the 'living landscape' as the number one quality they look for. Climate responsive design is centred on creating buildings that work with the local climate and in the subtropics this really translates to creating balance and flexibility in buildings so that they can be adjusted throughout the day and year as the weather moves from the tropical summer conditions towards the temperate winter conditions. 22.01.2022 As a regular user of the South Bank railway station in inner Brisbane, I have been waiting and hoping for the promised upgrade to eventuate and make that part of my day all the better. I patiently walked and worked around it through the long and agonising construction period, literally through rain, hail and shine, dust, grit and howling wind. Now, with mid-summer upon us for the third time since July 2016 when more than one website trotted out the same fantastical story about upgrades and major improvements at South Bank Station on Brisbane's rail network, I am still waiting. 17.01.2022 "Does the glass skyscraper have a future?" Last year as architects around the world declared the Climate Emergency, the AIA's Emerging Architects and Graduates Network (EmAGN) interviewed me along with others. While it seems office and apartment towers with walls of glass have not yet had their day in Brisbane, I note that elsewhere around the world, the high-rise building industry has already begun a shift away from a generation of all-glass facades and is placing more value on place-specific solutions with more overt external shading, and more actual wall than glass. 16.01.2022 Design as a living strategy..
16.01.2022 In February 2020, 121 multi-generational professionals from 60 built environment design and senior living organisations rolled up their sleeves and got to work in sixteen cross-disciplinary creative teams to explore what longevity looks like in the built environment, and the extent that baby boomers will change the landscape of living, learning, working and playing. Three weeks later they pitched their ideas to a panel of experts. [ 88 more words ] http://subtropicalcities.com//a-charrette-to-change-the-w/
15.01.2022 The important responsibility of architects and planners is to reduce building footprints to ensure sufficient backyard space to accommodate deep planted trees. ...Maintaining traditional building to building backyard separation is also essential to enable householders to open windows for cross-ventilation without compromising privacy. This is possibly the most important and simple climate action that is the responsibility of our professions. See more

05.01.2022 It has taken more than 70 years, but finally a political leader with some clout has declared that skyscrapers made of glass and steel have no place in our city anymore (he's talking about New York, but this applies to cities everywhere). Architects have been part of the problem implicated in climate change, long overdue for being part of the solution.

03.01.2022 THE OLDEST HOUSE IN FRANCE It's in Aveyron, it's 700 years old, built in the 13th century and belonging to a Jeanne. The ground floor is smaller than the upper ...floors, because, at the time, taxes were payed only on the ground floor, so the inhabitants made small ground floors and larger higher floors. The house shows that Jeanne was relatively rich because it is made of stone. The house is currently being restored.. See more
