18.01.2022 Wonder if Merc will print this. Wouldnt touch my OpEd, a bit too direct on the corruptuon risk of pollies giving free kicks to developers. WHATS IN A NAME!. Empowering the Minister to create new names is not innocuous. Having bought cheap land in Rokeby and Clarendonvale, developers sought to create new suburbs because a suburb aligned with Howrah is more desirable than Rokeby. For more desirable, read ‘more expensive’. The Nomenclature Board refused, for social and logica...l reasons but now the Minister wants to disempower the Nomenclature Board, remove Councils from the process and create the new suburbs anyway. The people of Rokeby don’t like the snobbery while Howrah Gardens and Glebe Hill residents don’t want to risk their postcodes. Like St Petersburg/Leningrad/Stalingrad, name changes by Ministerial Direction might produce some interesting ideological outcomes. Councils engaging their communities and an independent Nomenclature Board following nationally consistent guidelines works well. 12.01.2022 Who will bury sammy the seal. This is the 2nd dead sea lion found in Sth Tas in 2 weeks. He's at Geilston Bay between councils walkway and the foreshore. Council says its Parks' job, Parks says its the owners job, meanwhile the odour gets worse as do the public health issues. Council should give Sammy a decent burial then sort out who pays. The 'duck-shoving must stop!
12.01.2022 Howrah Gardens and Glebe Hill back under threat. Thanks to your support, Nomemclature Board has put new suburb off the cards and recommended minimal Howrah boundary adjustment (Option 1, Skillion Rd only) but now Lib Govt with close ties to developers have tabled legislation (Place Names Bill) b4 Plt which takes that power from the Nom Board and gives Minister power to create new suburbs and names behind closed doors. Barnett can and probably will approve developer requests f...or new suburbs for Howrah Gardens, Glebe Hill and behind Clarendonvale, all of which will attract a 7019 postcode and turn Rokeby and Clarendonvale into ghettos. I cant get any media interest but have a motion on Council on Monday night to support the independence of the Nom Board. Media are ignoring me so its time to lobby politicians, Labor MLCs - Sarah Lovell & Jo Sjeika, Labor MHA's Alison Standen, David O'Byrne and Greens Rosalie Woodruff to oppose it. I'd also give Sue Hickey and Madeline Ogilvie some pressure. And hey, Will Hodgman and Jackie Petrusma are supposed to be your reps too. It would be great to stop this in the lower house but if not I've already booked a place to brief the Legislative Council. We need a sensible centre like that which gave France Macron, Canada Trudeau & Aus Joe Lyons who defected from Scullin & joined Menzies to form UAP and govern brilliantly through the Depression. T'was the model for Menzies' broad church in forming a liberal party, not a Conservative one.
