13.01.2022 This front page story in the November edition of Pyramid views has been written by Tony Rossi. WHAT’S WITH ALL THE SUNFLOWERS? Travelling south of Gordonvale, ...it’s hard not to notice the crop of sunflowers growing near the highway. The Rossi family has been trialling mixed species fallow crops instead of the traditional single legume fallow crop to improve soil health and maintain productivity in the following sugarcane crop. The advantage of planting a mixture of species such as soybean, sunflower and cowpea is they all bring different benefits to the soil. The soybean is a legume and fixes nitrogen from the air which is an essential element for growth in sugarcane . The sunflowers have a fungi associated with their roots that helps make phosphorous available to the plant. After the soybean and sunflowers die off the cowpea (another legume ) climbs over the whole lot and makes a large biomass of organic material. As each plant has a different growth cycle this results in a longer cover period and introduces more diversity to the soil biota. The plants are then disced in and the nutrients are available to the following crop. Organic carbon levels increase and the structure of the soil is improved. As a result, fertiliser usage can be greatly reduced or in some cases eliminated while still providing the necessary nutrients to grow a good crop of cane. As well as the soil health benefits the sunflowers have been very popular with passing motorists. Hundreds of people have stopped for a photo opportunity or just enjoyed them as they travel by. The mass of flowers also help bees and other insects find an extra source of food. Don’t be surprised if you notice more fields of mixed species crops including the sunflowers popping up after Christmas as more farmers switch on to this new practice. Words by Tony Rossi. 07.01.2022 This week, staff from the Wet Tropics Management Authority’s Yellow Crazy Ant Eradication Program are deploying sticky traps along the banks of Mackey Creek and... Wrights Creek. We use sticky traps in the hotter months of the year as they enable us to survey around the clockants are less likely to forage during the day, being more active in the cooler evening hours. The traps remain set for several nights before we collect and check them for any sign of yellow crazy ants. See more
04.01.2022 A full day of National NAIDOC celebrations were held at the little McDonnell Creek State School located between #fisheryfalls and #deeral in Far North Queensland on Tuesday. The event was well organised by the Wanyurr-Majay RNTBC based in Babinda, and partners included Mulgrave Landcare and Greening Australia. Activities included the opening of the natural rock Yarning Circle with students learning how to sing in local language with Uncle Adrian Clive Murray, and finding out ...what is was like to be a student at the school 'back in the day' travelling to school by motor rail. After a fine morning tea of damper and scones and an exchange of gifts, we planted a bush tucker garden by McDonnell Creek complete with educational signage, topped of with a sausage sizzle. A heartfelt thanks to all involved and especially to the Wanyurr-Majay RNTBC Lynda Gregg and caring students and staff of this beautiful school #alwayswasalwayswillbe Most of these photos were taken by Campbell Clarke (the good ones!)
