09.01.2022 Have you been a fridge magnet? It surely is a strange and unsettling time. Most of our routines have been upended and we’re all feeling a little lost at what to expect next. Stress and anxiousness are associated with digestive discomfort and conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome. This is due in part to the reduction in digestive enzymes as well as dysregulation of the complex gut/brain axis. Eating a meal in even the smallest state of stress can cause digestive issues.... Rather than becoming overwhelmed during this time take comfort in the daily things you can positively effect. Eating mindfully is one simple step you can take that will have an enormous impact! o Before each meal put down your phone and turn off any screens, take the time to set the table being mindful to create a calm space. o Look at your meal take three deep breaths and ground yourself, next look at the colours and textures, smell the aromas. o Whether you’re eating with someone or not take a moment to say something positive about what you are about to eat, this will bring you to the present moment, it can be as simple as ‘the broccoli is so vibrant’ or ‘I love the smell of oregano’. It may feel silly to say it to yourself but throw caution to the wind and give it a try! o Now take the time to savour each bite, really taste the food that’s been created, maybe it needs more lemon or basil or perhaps it’s just perfect, or perhaps it’s not to your liking, whatever you feel be present in that moment. Eating consciously can have a profound effect on your body and simple steps to slow your mind down and be present in the moment can have beneficial overall health effects. Don’t ever underestimate the power of food, as I mentioned the gut and brain are intrinsically linked! #eatmindfully #askpetermullen #naturopathnewcastle #covid
06.01.2022 3 simple tips to keep your gut happy A healthy gut can help you lose weight, regain energy, boost your immunity and much more. Your gut microbiome is made up trillions of organisms (mainly bacteria) within your digestive tract. These microorganisms are critical to your health, helping with everything from your digestion and metabolism to immune function and brain health.... Everyone’s microbiome is unique and is influenced by many factors like genetics, stress, illness, diet and lifestyle. The phrase ‘you are what you eat’ definitely applies to your microbiome. Here are 3 things you can do every day to keep your gut happy: Increase your fibre (prebiotic food) In order to keep your good bugs happy, it’s important to feed them. If they don’t have enough fuel, your microbiome will become less diverse. Think plenty of veggies, brown rice and many other easy and delicious wholefoods to increase your fibre. Interestingly, evidence now shows those who consume more than 30 different types of plants/vegetables each week have a much more diverse microbiome compared to those who consume 10 or fewer types of plants weekly. Drink 2 to 3 litres of water daily Whether you drink it still or bubbly, hot or cold water is important for your gut health. Water can improve digestion by making sure your body absorbs minerals and nutrients properly. It also promotes the balance of good bacteria and has been shown to have a positive impact on the mucosal lining of the intestines. Move your body It might surprise you to learn that a lack of exercise has been linked to reduced microbial diversity in the gut another reason to get moving! The researchers found participants with higher cardiorespiratory fitness had a more diverse microbiome. Consistency is key once the participants stopped exercising, their microbiome diversity dropped. For starters, I recommend a brisk walk for 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week.
