22.01.2022 Mullum SEED is a community sponsor of RenewFEST. Check out the Full Program here. Changing our society for the better takes effort. It takes ideas, plans, sweat..., laughter and tears. Most of all it takes a community to get behind each other and make it happen. So join us at Renew FEST 2021 and let's move forward together to bring on the full system regeneration that we are needing to battle the big problems impacting us all like Climate Change, Economic Inequality, Systemic Racism and Injustice towards our First Nations People and how to build a Sustainable Future. At Renew FEST you will hear from thought leaders on these issues and meet some change makers who are knee deep in addressing these important issues every day. Mullum SEED will have a stall showcasing a few of our projects and partners including the Organic Food Co-op, The Significant Tree Register and the Mullumbimby Community Gardens. We are also looking for some more volunteers to help us set up on the day so if you are keen to help in exchange for a free ticket to the event reach out to Andrew at [email protected]

11.01.2022 It is with great sadness that we inform you, that our dear Glenn Higson left our realm yesterday. Glenn gave so much not only to the garden. He began the One Roof organisation, to assist homeless. He gave so many years to the Mullum Community Garden as a Supervisor and generous patron. Such a dear kind hearted, caring spirit that he was. RIP dear Glenn. You will be greatly missed. We will be holding a memorial for Glenn shortly and will keep you informed on the details <3 <3 <3

08.01.2022 Help need to cardboard and mulch rainforest trees Byron Shire Chemical Free Landcare next fortnightly working bee will be on Saturday, the 8th of May, from 8 am to 12 noon. Help is needed to to finish to cardboard and mulch 500 trees planted in January last year. The event will be held at Saltwater Creek, adjacent to the Mullumbimby Community Garden. To find us walk into the garden, pass the main office build and you will spot the mulch and tools. With the abundance of recen...t rainfall, around 1300 mm since January, and plenty of mulch, the volunteers are hoping that the gesture will speed the growth of the new plants. This helps create more dense shade, which inhibits the growth of exotic grasses, such as Broad Leaved Paspalum and Seteria. These 2 species of exotic grasses compete for critical light and nutrients needed at the early rainforest tree planting stages. Mulch is a key element in restoring degraded land, as it aids in the creation of healthy soils. "More biomass, more bacteria, then more worms, more microryza fungi, which results in more co-operation between the plant and soil kingdoms", explains the project coordinator, bush regenerator Nadia de Souza Pietramale. "Although we are using wood chips, any biomass can be used on tree planting sites, particularly palm leaves", adds Nadia. Help is needed to collect cardboard. Donations of palm leaves are also very welcome, by emailing [email protected] or texting Nadia on 0478272300. Thank you for Brigid Prain, Willian Keyte and Asaf Cohen for helping on Saturday the 24th of April. Also deep gratitude to Bavara and Gerd that worked on the chemical free site in Brunswick Heads and completed the follow up work all the alway to the South boundary. Please wear a long sleeved shirt for sun protection, long pants, a hat, gloves and bring water, sunblock and some morning tea. First aid kit and tools will be provided.

06.01.2022 Article and photo by Nadia de Souza Volunteers celebrate ten years of weeding On our last working bee BSCFL volunteers celebrated the end of Bitou bush primary ...work and follow-up weeding of all dense seedling patches at our Brunswick Heads site . This is a massive achievement and thank you to all the community members who helped physically or financially in the completion of this task. It has taken us 10 years to finish the densely-Bitou Bush covered 5 hectares though much of the time has been spent in fun, socialising, and discussion. It has been a wonderful experience with strong bonds formed. We will now focus on the small infestations of other weeds such as Glory Lily, Syngonium (planted by campers), Madeira Vine and Coastal Tea Tree. The site is recovering amazingly with the return of Banksia Woodland and Littoral Rainforest communities and, during our work, three threatened species have been discovered: Pink Nodding Orchid, Baker's Wattle, and Stinking Cryptocarya. The recovery has been inhibited by illegal camping, with a great deal of vegetation destruction and fires, and we have spent many of our working days removing the rubbish they accumulate. (We have also spent a lot of time clearing rubbish from the Tyagarah Nature Reserve). The camper's dogs have been a threat to local wildlife. Unfortunately, locals also often take their dogs through the bush or the fire trial, ignoring the 'no dog area' signs. Byron Shire Chemical Free Landcare next fortnightly working bee on Saturday, the 5th September, from 9 am to 1 pm, at the Brunswick Crown Land site Lot 428 just south of the Surf Club. Meet at the fire trail gate. Please wear boots, a long sleeve shirt and long pants, a hat, gloves and bring water, and some morning tea. Tools and first aid kit will be provided. Please call on 0478272300 if you can't find us. Self distance of 1.5 metres will be required during the working bee. byronshirechemicalfreelandcare.org BSCFL is a project of Mullum Seed Mullumbimby Sustainability Education and Enterprise Development Incorporated Nadia de Souza Pietramale Project Coordinator 0478 272 300
