15.01.2022 The old Surf Coast Shire Sport and Recreation Centre is an empty shell but not for long! The plan is to make the building into a thriving hub of activity for local Performing and Visual Arts, Artists, audiences and visitors. We are thrilled to confirm the amazing funding boost for Torquay and the Surf Coast announced in the latest State Budget. The Victorian Government will be investing in the creativity of our regional community with a contribution of $240,000 for the fit...-out of the Torquay Sport & Recreation Centre, to develop an art facility comprising a black box theatre, art gallery, local art shop and a meeting/workshop room. These facilities will be available for use by the arts community by mid 2021. They will include: - A 200 square metre gallery for local artists (2D, 3D, digital) to display and sell their work. - A local art shop. - A theatre space (with various lights and staging options) for performance, rehearsal, music practice, readings, presentations, courses, play-readings, literary events - A meeting room for smaller-scale events, courses, training programs, classes, sharing, displays, workshops. - Artists’ ‘hub’ where people can meet, chat about things arts-related or simply hang out with other artists. Together with the Surf Coast Council’s 2020-21 budget contribution of $60,000, the total funding available will be in the vicinity of $300,000. The MAC is currently in discussion with Surf Coast Shire on the terms of a lease for the building and, with the replacement sports stadium in North Torquay expected to be completed by the end of the year, MAC is hopeful that ‘bump-in may start early in 2021. We look forward to sharing the developments with you! #surfcoast #visitvictoria #creativevictoria #creativevictoriapartnerships #surfcoastshire #visitgreatoceanroad #greatoceanroad #torquay #surfcoastartist #surfcoastartstrail #melbourne #victoria #theatre #theatrelife #visualart
