20.01.2022 DROUGHT UPDATE - CATTLE: For over a century Mumble Peg has housed cattle. From calves, heifers and steers as well as a sturdy Hereford bull, cattle have roamed across the plains at Mumble Peg. Yesterday saw the end of an era... As the drought rolls on dust storm after dust storm, we’ve had to say good bye to our once strong girls who have become good and faithful mums over the years. ... We’ve also said farewell to our big bull and yesterday, we waved goodbye to our young steers... All have been wore out from months and years of drought but were as well fed as can be, despite it all. These are serious times; as the summer heat comes in, we know there’ll be cause for even more drastic measures. And sometimes we do...15ml the one day, 4ml the next and then...nothing...nothing at all... Then, after multiple break downs, we’re finally ready to put the headers in the ground, only to have a large downpour, put all the crops in jeopardy! *sigh* you’ve gotta love the seasons...Although the past few days have been touch and go, we’re just happy that there WILL BE a harvest this year! ... The seasons, the weather, the machinery, are all temporary, nothing that will last forever, right? (Tell that to a frustrated farmer who’s just biting the bit, to get going ). Labour Day in Australia acknowledges the achievements of organised labour, to implement the eight-hour day in the middle of the nineteenth century when previously workers were required to work 10 - 12 hours a day for six days a week! While this hasn’t changed much for us and although our work is never done , we recognize that it’s important to STOP and smell the orange blossoms! 05.01.2022 2018 THE BIG DRY: Mumble Peg has come a long way in the last 12 months, as we held on in the midst of the drought. We lost our cattle, we lost our sheep; we became very accustomed with death. And then, in April, yet another loss. Mumble Pegs working Kelpie of 8 years, Danny, was diagnosed with an enlarged heart and he suddenly passed away after his last run in the paddock. Rain however, signifies a new beginning! But there was none of it, not a single drop. So, we risked it ...all and sowed our crops anyway. In all, we lost half of our crops to drought. And with all the lows of 2018, November came round and finally, so did some rain ; we’ve covered our soil health for the next year at least, the sheep are much healthier and our cattle are so resourceful and battling on! But what about the citrus? there was a season of export and the orchard experienced a great yield of Navalina and Valencia oranges! The juice continues to go from strength to strength and we look forward to what next year holds for the citrus market. So with that, we say goodbye to 2018 and look forward to New Year, New Chances, Same Dreams and Fresh Starts; Here’s to 2019!
