22.01.2022 ‘An Invitation to Listen’ is the title of the introductory chapter of Thomas Mayor’s book Finding the Heart of the Nation. Social Justice Advocates of the Sapp...hire Coast have organised a free forum for Harmony Day at the Bega Civic Centre beginning at 2pm. Please come along and listen to Thomas Mayor and Teela Reid talk about the Uluru Statement from the Heart and its importance to Aboriginal communities all over Australia. Thomas Mayor is a Larrakia man with Torres Strait Islander heritage. Always looking for ways to empower First Nations people, Thomas participated in a trial dialogue on constitutional recognition. As a result he accepted an offer to be a delegate for the Darwin region to attend the Uluru First Nations Constitutional Convention. Since then Thomas has journeyed around the regions of Australia listening and recording conversations with First Nations people. In his book he says: Listening to the voices behind the Uluru Statement from the Heart has changed me, and I hope it will change you. If you stop to listen, perhaps we can change the Australian Constitution so that First Nations Voices are always heard. Then we can find the heart of the nation. Teela Reid is a Wiradjuri and Wailwan woman from Gilgandra. A lawyer with experience in Criminal and Civil Law she is passionate about law reform. She has been described as fiery and brilliant and is a forceful advocate for the Uluru Statement, as Malcolm Turnbull discovered during a Q&A episode on ABC! Her appearances on The Drum also reinforce her articulate and well thought out arguments. An important part of Teela’s work as a lawyer is being able to listen to the people she represents, who are often vulnerable and disadvantaged by their Aboriginal heritage. She herself comes from an area where her ancestors were forced onto missions, unable to leave without permission. Her grandparents couldn’t walk along the same side of the street as white people and her great-grandparents had to wear dog-tags to identify themselves as Aboriginal. Teela had a leading part in the Constitutional dialogue process that culminated in the Uluru Statement from the Heart. To begin the forum three local Aboriginal music students will each perform for the audience followed by a panel of three young Social Justice Advocates from Lumen Christi College who will speak about projects illustrating their support for the Uluru Statement and other issues. Local Aboriginal people will come together with Teela and Thomas to discuss issues emerging from the Uluru Statement. It is up to the audience to listen to their concerns, learn the truth about their history and support an Aboriginal voice enshrined in the Constitution so we can all walk together for a better future.
