25.01.2022 It is with reluctance that I announce the suspension of keiko at Mumeishi Berwick for the remainder of March, with sensei and executive committee monitoring the situation to ascertain when it will be appropriate to return to our usual schedule. Until we return I wish you all the best to health, and hope that you continue your kendo shugyo outside of the dojo. Trent... President Mumeishi Kendo Club Australia See more

24.01.2022 Ippon and Yukodatotsu .The difference by Inoue Yoshihiko Hanshi

23.01.2022 I have found this old videographic document from the 30s, in which the ten kata of Nihon Kendo are recorded in a very particular way (for example the use of Fum...ikomi in the cuts), as you know Nihon Kendo Kata was created by integrating many kata from different kenjutsu schools in 1912. The purpose of this action was, I heard, to keep the traditional kenjutsu forms in kendo to remember where kendo came from. This historical document evidences the process followed when the Japanese government in the early 1900s to transfer the Samurai spirit to the modern era commissioned 5 of the most valuable Sensei of Kenjustu to codify the Kata (sword techniques) Takano Sasaburo - Ono Ha Itto Ryu Monna Tadashi - Hokushi Itto Ryu Naito Takaharu - Hokushin Itto Ryu Tsuji Shinpei - Shingyoto Ryu Negishi Shingoro - Shindo Munen Ryu In 1912, they presented the Dai Nippon Teikoku Kendo Kata (Kendo Kata of Great Imperial Japan) this codification arose from the synthesis of the best sword techniques of Japan, and consisted of 7 kata of tachi against tachi (long sword against long sword) and 3 kata of tachi versus kodachi (long sword versus short sword) Q.Ortiz, Naples april 2020

18.01.2022 Tonight was a very special occassion. We enjoyed a global Keiko session with our Mumeishi brothers and sisters in the UK via Zoom... Sensei Terry would have been so happy

17.01.2022 30th Anniversary Training Mumeishi Australia's 30th Anniversary was 2020. As you all know, we couldn't have a proper celebration due to the COVID pandemic.... And we couldn't even hold our annual Terry Holt Memorial Championship! However, we celebrated on Sun 7-Feb-21 by presenting the Founder of Mumeishi Australia, Brent Gazzaniga sensei, with small gift. Sensei's commitment to the club is amazing, and his knowledge of kendo, iaido, and their philosophy has inspired countless students through the last 3 decades. Thank you sensei!

17.01.2022 A message from our sensei, Junji Sakamoto sensei... Dear Friends, I hope all is doing well. We have been experiencing difficult periods.... During the painful pandemic periods, we also found some things we can control well. Technology has been used well to engage with others. E.g Regular Japanese Cultural online training/classes have been provided by many clubs whatever their art is. I have been teaching the language for more than 20 years in VIC schools. I will offer a free 60min Basic Japanese language lesson on Zoom on 23rd October from 6:30pm. The following is the link to register the Japanese language session (Only for adults-over 18y.o not for school students) https://form.jotform.com/202832764377058 Please note this is not endorsed by any budo or any other associations. It is purely as a token of my appreciation to those who enjoy/study Japanese culture. The fact that many enjoy the Japanese culture, that is an absolutely honourable thing for me as a Japanese. I would like to assist their Japanese language study/interests. It's Grand Final Weekend, yet I look forward to seeing many Japan-lovers who are sober enough.

13.01.2022 ... from around the world, stay at home !

13.01.2022 We were able to complete the informal end of 2020 keiko with 108 Men uchi on 30th December. Some of you may know that people in Japan get rid of the 108 BONNOU() on New Year's Eve while hearing the sound of a temple bell (108 bell sounds) BONNOU can be translated "evil spirits" in English. 6 Mumeishi members who may have the most large numbers of evil spirits ? came together to complete the 108 Men Uchi this year. We got rid of all evil spirits and Mumeishi members are rea...dy to welcome 2021. We thank you all fellow kendo-ka who linked with us during the tough periods during 2020. Your support encouraged us enormously. We will be back on dojo on the 3rd of January. We wish you all a happy/healthy 2021.

11.01.2022 When the opportunity to cut presents itself you should be ready, when you create that opportunity then you are surely ready...

11.01.2022 Yesterday was our first training for 2021. It was great! I felt fantastic afterwards. However, it wasn't easy. I struggled with the humidity fogging up my face shield, and with the mask and face shield there were times I couldn't get enough air.... But, our club and Junji sensei have a strategy for us to be safe during these difficulties. We had plenty of time to "catch our breath" and a short break about half way helped a lot. There are a couple of things I get from this experience: - I can still achieve yukodatotsu while not being able to see my opponent - I can get through a series of cuts with less air available - and can recover pretty quickly afterwards. The biggest insight, however, is that if I can train under this duress, how easy will Kendo be when these impediments are removed? So, I see these difficulties as an opportunity not a burden. Like the runner who wears a weight belt. In a few months, hopefully, we can all get back to training with *just* the difficulty of "normal" Kendo. So, watch out for those who've kept training with these difficulties - they'll be unstoppable when they can see and breathe normally! keep safe, Russ

09.01.2022 What is Heijoshin () ? Heijoshin literally means ordinary mind/heart. It is a state of mind when you look at thing as what it is and nothing more. There is n...o fear, no doubt, no surprise and no confusion. In Kendo, we must cultivate this mindset that will enable us to confront any situation with an ordinary mind, that is to deal with it as if nothing special or out of ordinary. If we look at the first two letters of Heijoshin in Kanji, (Heijo) means flat or calm as usual. Therefore, Heijoshin simply implies having a calm mind as usual when facing any situation. There is a known saying applicable to this state of mind in Kendo: walk down the road of fear, through the valley and the shadow of doubt, cross over the mountain of surprise, and bravely sail beyond the sea of confusion. Fear, doubt, surprise and confusion are all the creations of our own thought or imagination. It is our human nature to fear when facing a situation, and out of fear appear the doubt; doubt will question our ability to handle the situation; we will then be caught by surprise the situation is not as what we think; and finally it will lead us to confusion. Therefore, if we could face the situation with Heijoshin, we will be able to look at thing or situation as what it is. With a calm mind as usual, we will be able to notice the snake coiling under the window in the shadow of fear is in fact only a coil of rope.

09.01.2022 Good evening all, An e-mail addressing keiko and the current state of covid-19 was sent out earlier this afternoon. In short, keiko will continue as usual until such a time as we are advised by the VKR, AKR, or deparment of health to cease activities. The committee asks that you practice common sense in the matter and refrain from attending keiko in the event of infection or interaction with potentially infected individuals.... We thank you for your co-operation, and look forward to seeing you at the next keiko. Trent President

07.01.2022 Well done tonight, everyone! For the first time since March we were able to wear our bogu and cut one another, and what a great feeling it was to strike and be struck.

06.01.2022 Very thankful to have had all these wonderful guests join us at Mumeishi for keiko this morning. The dojo really came alive with the spirit of so many enthusiastic kendoka from 5 different dojo.

05.01.2022 Celeste O'Keefe finally getting around to this... Apols for delay... Challenge Accepted... With Kendo brothers in arms Jason Widdy Gary Oliver and Katsumi Kuram...ochi with Mr. Kiyoshi Nakakura Sensei. Mr. Nakakura was so good at Kendo that he was considered a 'Kensei,' or 'sword saint' and reputedly declined the rank of 10th dan because he believed that should be reserved for demi-gods and he did not consider himself worthy. The net result being that nobody else could become a 10th dan !!! I was very fortunate due to Gary Oliver and Katsumi Kuramochi's investment in me and my interest in Kendo to train with the great man once on his final visit to Melbourne. For that, a thousand thanks. Of course, being the youngest and least experienced, I shut my eyes at the critical shutter moment...

01.01.2022 Here are the articles I was speaking about after Wednesdays suburi session from two very strong kenshi - Harada Sensei of Tokyo Metropolitan Police(Keishicho), and Furusawa Sensei previously of Imperial Guard now head coach at Nippon Sport Science University. In both cases they speak about their approach to suburi and how by applying the correct attitude throughout they were able to grow their kendo. Given what we are all experiencing at the moment these could not have been... released (in full) at a better time.
