25.01.2022 Engineering. I wonder where this will take them to next....

25.01.2022 3 cakes!! "My tummy is happy now"

22.01.2022 So, I thought we might be onto a ‘thing’...... Last week we took clipboards to the Zoo and drew Dangalaba the Crocodile, it was a huge hit and the children were so involved and interested and proud of their drawings! I decided we should do it again and asked the children which animal they’d like to draw today... lion king said Viv and everyone was on board with it so the decision was made. ... We made our way to see the lions but unfortunately didn’t have a great view of them. Nevertheless, the children sat with their boards and I tried to give a little direction in the way of asking how many legs do lions have? How many ears? Is their tail long or short? But it just wasn’t the right fit for today. They put pen to paper but there wasn’t really much interest in it, even when we changed viewing windows and had a much better view, they just said no thanks Sam when I asked if they’d like to draw again. Drawing animals was the plan, but just because this activity didn’t take off today, doesn’t mean that our trip wasn’t beneficial or that they won’t be interested in drawing again on another trip to the zoo. Today we learned that the ‘turtles’ the children love so much are actually called a ‘Radiated Tortoise’...! The children told me about the ‘tracks’ they leave as they move around in the red dirt and sand. They’re leaving marks Sam, so they know the way We discovered that they live to around 100yrs old and I told the children that 100yrs is called a ‘century’ so we’ve added a new word to their vocabulary. We saw the porcupines who we have NEVER seen on any of our many visits to the zoo. We also saw a cute little mouse sat atop a Boulder right next to said porcupines, check out the photo, I’m not kidding! We were reunited with the Zebras who we haven’t seen for many weeks and they were extremely playful today! We saw Trisha and Permai working hard to retrieve food from a container that their keepers had made for them. They had to bang it hard on the ground and shake out the contents. It was amazing to witness how intelligent these huge majestic animals are. The hyenas were even active today instead of hiding behind a log. We’re so lucky we have the ability to see and learn about these amazing animals. A trip to the zoo is ALWAYS an opportunity to discover and learn, drawings or no drawings.

22.01.2022 DIY Resources. I hand made this little family of Ducks. Each duckling has a mark to show they belong to mummy duck. But each duck's mark is in a different spot. Supporting inclusion and diversity in such a fun and simple way. ... #myfamilydaycare #inclusion #diversity #diyresources #diy #5littleducks #homemade

19.01.2022 DIY Resources Finger gym activity. Super simple, all you need is; cork boards... pins elastic bands. They make wonderful Geo boards. #geoboard #diyresources #homemade #fingergym #finemotorskills #myfamilydaycare

18.01.2022 I was sat making some felt characters for the new story board I made last night. Willa pulled up a chair beside me and started creating. She made a Mummy, Daddy, Jude and Willa. Mummy doesn’t have any hair because her head was too close to the top of the fabric. ... Jude is yellow because it’s his favourite colour. Daddy is Blue as it’s his favourite colour and you Willa is pink because, yep, you guessed it, it’s her favourite colour! You can clearly see a difference in the first two she made, Mummy and Jude, compared to the last two. Willa had to work so hard when cutting them out with precision and she was so successful and pleased with the results. I think she just ran out of steam a little and relaxed for the last two. How wonderful does her family look on our board? Role modelling. I didn’t set this as an activity today. Everybody was busy and I sat down and let my creative juices flow. Willa liked what she saw and put her own spin on it. We learn more when we are compelled to invent - Jean Piaget

18.01.2022 Little Monkey Sports today in Mindarie! We stayed shaded from the beautiful sunshine today and relocated within the oval we usually use. Crocodile crocodile was a little different today! Instead of being eaten, the children were SOAKED!! So much fun! ... The children worked hard moving over obstacles to transport the beanbags and animals to the corresponding colours on the parachutes! They then had the opportunity to perform ‘javelin’ like throws with some varying sized rockets!! Not too much running today though to try protect the children from becoming dehydrated Thanks for the fun morning Kris!

18.01.2022 How do you draw?

17.01.2022 Nutmegz taught us about some of our body parts today and she did so through nursery rhymes. As usual, everybody was immersed and engaged in the session and hanging off Megs every word. I will post a few videos in the comments for you to check out

16.01.2022 Some more of their play today.

13.01.2022 Last week we heard a story about a koala who knitted a jumper! Today I introduced the children to wool which is the same material the koala used! We took a short stroll to the back of our home and found some small sticks. Of course our love of flowers meant we collected some of those too. We returned and I asked the children to listen and watch closely as I showed them a stick wrapping technique. Their listening ears we’re definitely switched on because they moved the wool and stick almost exactly as I had done. The results are beautiful and I’m so proud of everyone for giving it a go. It’s not an easy task when your fine and gross motor skills aren’t fully developed so well done to Flynn, Joni, Jude and Vivian!

11.01.2022 Well this stuff is pretty cool to explore! Aqua sand!! Take a look....

11.01.2022 Flynn is a fan of spiders the last few weeks! Today we discovered that it takes 2 hours for a spider to complete her web and she starts to create it at sunset, when she’s finished with it, she’ll eat the web to absorb its rich protein and become prepared to spin her web again for the next day! Please also note how Flynn collected wool from our other activity table and used it to wrap up the fly just as the spider does in the story with her silky thread. ... Outcome 4:3 Children transfer and adapt what they have learned from one context to another. #slowdown #myfamilydaycare #spidersweb

10.01.2022 Vivian enjoying story telling this morning with our newly created felt characters.

09.01.2022 The most relaxed Friday morning we’ve had in a while.

08.01.2022 Joni - it’s nice here

08.01.2022 Tennis/soccer/hockey Tensockey!! A great game they have invented!

08.01.2022 Today Willa wrote out our daily info board. Learning Outcome 4:3 Children transfer and adapt what they have learned from one context to another.

08.01.2022 Ahhh Wednesday, you did it again! Joni, William, Louis & Macey have only been together since July but their relationships might have you believing otherwise. They blend together so beautifully with their empathy, imagination, curiosity, kindness, love & FUN that they each bring to the group. ... I’m grateful that 3 out of 4 will remain together next year as I see such meaningful relationships forming. Anyway, here are some snaps of our morning together both at home and during our visit to Lake Gwelup.

07.01.2022 Pool slide weather!!!! YAY !! Love springtime in WA! This little blue pool sees so much action for half of the year and today it was dusted off after hibernating through Winter and Autumn!

07.01.2022 1 photo, 4 children, a small space but so much happening. Flynn is brushing up on his spider knowledge again. Jude is making a ramp road for his cars. ... Viv was sad that she wasn’t invited to help Jude so we found another way for her to make her own colourful road. And Joni requested our photo journal bringing down to the floor so she could look back on fond memories of past activities at Mumfi’s. Their time here is precious and so valuable.

05.01.2022 S E V E N H U N D R E D L I K E S ! ! ! 7 0 0 ! Thank you to everyone who actively follows and takes an interest in what we do at Mumfi’s. My aim is to showcase how amazing Family Day Care can be and how much learning and development happens for our children in their home away from home. ... FDC Educators work so hard to provide a program that is Holistically suited to each child in their care and to create an environment which provides opportunities for children to feel empowered and autonomous. As you follow our journey, you too shall see the growth in each child that spends time here and also the growth in their Educator, me, Sam Folan, as I continue to build my skills and knowledge of the development of children. Please continue to enjoy following our Journey, we love having you along for the ride.

04.01.2022 They made an obstacle course courtesy of large loose parts!

04.01.2022 Today was supposed to be sensory jelly play but someone forgot to buy jelly crystals. Instead I made flower ice blocks, perfect for this balmy spring day in WA! Perfect for little Miss 1 at least. She spent the most time at this station. ... Everyone else seemed to be immersed in obstacle course play. To make the most out of the beautiful blocks, I have re-frozen them and will let tomorrow’s group investigate too and see if there’s a different approach, which I think there will be with an older group. But you just never know.... The beauty of free play.

03.01.2022 T E D D Y B E A R S P I C N I C As Joni was getting ready to leave yesterday when mum picked up, she was also just setting up a Teddy bears picnic... with time restraints we had to cut it short but I promised Joni we would do a teddy bears picnic today! I set up a little provocation to remind her of her desires yesterday and planned a trip to Lake Gwelup for a picnic! ... We set up next to the play park and I watched on as the children challenged themselves. You may remember a few weeks ago we noticed that Macey was unhappy on the uneven ground at star swamp.. today she enjoyed the grassed area with her bare feet but seemed a little cautious when we moved into the sand. She eventually accidentally popped her hands in the sand and as you can see in the pics, she starts to investigate and enjoy the feeling of the cold, damp and gritty sand. I’m sure we’ll have Macey immersed in nature by her 2nd birthday! Louis enjoyed challenging himself on the biggest slide there and requested no assistance at all the whole time! William was enjoying doing ‘good stuff’ in the sand. It looked a little bit like break dancing. I liked it. It was ‘good’. After our play and picnic we wandered across the field to the walking deck and enjoyed watching the birds and ducks frolicking in the Lake. Then we took a leisurely stroll home for lunch and rest time

02.01.2022 I wonder what we might get up to with Meg today?

02.01.2022 How do you feel?

02.01.2022 A bit of AMAZING jumping and climbing from my little crew! Absolutely benefiting from our Little Monkey Sports classes!

02.01.2022 Something I’ve only fairly recently studied and understood and I’m implementing in Everyday practice. A wise person once told me that she thought the saying you get what you get and you don’t get upset was completely disregarding a persons feelings, and she’s right. Instead we have altered the saying to you get what you get and it’s ok to be upset. I often extend by saying being upset can’t change what’s happening but I’m here for you if you need a hug ... Being an educator is a journey that will never see a finish line. There is always so much more to understand and learn about the development of the youngest generation. It’s fascinating.
