24.01.2022 Here’s to all the midwives past present and future! I had amazing midwifery care during my pregnancies, as I birthed each of my five babies and in the weeks after. My daughters were supported by midwives as they each birthed my five grand babies. They all know the importance of continuity of midwifery care but some have been victims of the postcode lottery that excludes so many women from the gold standard of midwifery care. ... One chose to birth 2 hours from home with My Midwives in Toowoomba to get the pregnancy birth and postnatal care she deserved.

24.01.2022 This week is Birth Trauma Awareness Week. Earlier in the year, in the before times, I spoke at the Australian Breastfeeding Association Health Professional Sem...inar series about the impact of birth trauma on breastfeeding. I thought I'd like to share a few key points from that talk... Vulnerability is a real and necessary part of birth. This increased psycho-emotional sensitivity serves a primal purpose: to connect women and their babies. The experience of threat (physical, psychological and emotional) while in this vulnerable state gives rise to the experience of trauma. There are a spectrum of experiences of trauma responses, at one end of which is PTSD. PTSD is often undiagnosed or misdiagnosed due to overlap with other mental health concerns. One of the main hormones (oxytocin) linked to feelings of safeness and interpersonal affliation (ie connection) also plays a role in breastfeeding. The solution is NOT to prevent women from feeling vulnerable. Instead, we need to create spaces in which it is safe for women to be vulnerable. #psychology #psychologistsofinstagram #birth #trauma #traumainformedcare #birthtrauma #vulnerability #oxytocin #mentalhealth #perinatalmentalhealth #mohterhood #feministpsychology #birthisafeministissue #roarbehindthesilence #breastfeeding #infantfeeding

08.01.2022 Optimal cord clamping Hannah Tizard @midwifetiz writes ‘Most guidelines suggest waiting at least 1-3 minutes but the research says >5 minutes or until pulsati...ons cease has the greatest advantages’. There are so many benefits of OCC for baby including - Up to 30% more blood volume Increased blood volume helps to keep baby warm after birth and promotes full perfusion of blood to the brain and lungs. Increased haemoglobin levels improve oxygen and iron transportation around the body. Iron is important for the long term neurodevelopment of baby. Improved fine motor function and social skills later in life. Increased immune promoting stem cells providing lifelong protection to baby. Helps to keep the mother and baby unit together and facilitates neonatal benefits of skin to skin. Below is the link to Hannah’s fact sheet about optimal cord clamping in the 4baby section https://www.all4birth.com/factsheet-default/ Is optimal cord clamping in your birth preferences?
