17.01.2022 -The story of the Garlic Chives- Soooooo, it’s the long weekend which means an extra day to spend in the garden right? Of course! Today’s photo of the garlic chives was taken this morning After some much needed heavy rain last night. ... So what are garlic chives? The leaf texture is solid, flat and rather chewy, quite different from the soft, rolled, hollow leaves of chives. Garlic Chives must be lighlty cooked or they lose their subtle flavour. They can also be blanched, stir fried, or incorporated as part of a clear soup, in the same way you would use onion or garlic. Garlic chives are rich in various vitamins, including vitamin A as well as vitamins B2 and vitamin C. High content of calcium potassium and Iron. Also rich in dietary fibre.

Ohhh and the labor that goes into keeping the pool clean, not to mention the nasty chemicals. Mumma Phan decided that the pool needed to go and in its place a Herb garden. It’s amazing what you can do in just 5 months. Here’s a clip of how that went in March of this year.

12.01.2022 -The story of the Laksa mint- Mumma Phan had her first garden tour last Sunday. Wow, what an awesome day! A lot of interest around today’s featured herb known as the Hot Mint, Laksa Mint or Vietnamese mint. Everyone chuckled when we spoke about its medicinal properties. It’s a common belief that this herb reduces sexual desire. Many Buddhist monks grow and consume this herb to repress sexual urges in the belief that it helps them remain celibate. The herb itself has a strong citrus odour with a spice and peppery aftertaste that lingers. Besides it’s super power to suppress sexual urges the herb contains natural anti inflammatory properties and may be used to treat indigestion and stomach aches. It’s a perennial and grows all year round. Do you have this herb in your garden?

08.01.2022 -The story of the Fish Mint - Oh do I have a big fish tale to tell! Posting this one before a beautiful hump day Wednesday. FISH MINT is one of the stranger herbs that you will encounter as it tastes sour and smells rather fishy. Fish mint has a distinct heart shaped leaf with a shiny top and is served alongside many dishes such as vietnamese crepe, salad and noodle dishes.... Fish mint contains polyphenols, which is high in antioxidants for the benefits of anti-aging. It can stimulate white blood cell development to support the immune system. The name of the plant in Japanese is ‘Dokudami’, which means poison blocking plant.

06.01.2022 -The Story of Harvest Day- In the cooler months harvest day in Mumma Phan’s garden occurs once a week, warmer and hotter months twice a week. Mumma Phan suggests trimming your herbs constantly. This promotes growth in your herbs, whatever the variety. The rewards? Well see for yourself.

06.01.2022 -The story of Organics and Companion growing- A question we get asked all the time is how do you keep the bugs away. The answer is rather simple but leads to the reason why we keep it organic and the choices of herbs we use. Vietnamese cuisine has always used herbs eaten fresh not cooked to complement the specific dish. With this in mind, pesticides and herbicides can not and should not be used in the garden. So how do you control bugs? Simple, grow a variety of herbs and they will act as natural bug repellents. Some herbs repel certain bugs and others herbs will repel other bugs. The bigger the variety of herbs you grow, the less bugs you’ll have in the garden. Try and expand the number of herbs you grow, you’ll be surprised.

04.01.2022 I thought I’d introduce everyone to our employee of the month. He’s dedicated to catching bugs in the garden every morning and some afternoons. Keeps to himself and generally gets the job done. We aptly named him Willy.
