25.01.2022 This is what chomping looks like when your child is not efficiently using their tongue to feed. All the movement is coming from the jaw and the tongue is not... elevating and suctioning as it should. Sometimes you will hear clicks or what may even sound like gulps as the tongue is popping off. Moms may say it causes pain, but not always. If you are having trouble nursing and this looks familiar, please see an oral motor specialist soon! Delays in getting help only make it harder for baby to learn the correct way to do it! A little infant can learn in just 2-3 sessions! Let’s correct this together. See more

24.01.2022 Childhood snoring why should we care? Every week for over a year, I have been meeting online with the Endeavour Group an inspiring group of dental leaders i...n paediatric airway from the US. This group is doing great work to facilitate more dentists in the US screening for sleep breathing abnormalities and the earliest signs of poor facial and airway development in children under 6 years. This is important because very young children are most susceptible to these hidden airway problems. They cause fragmented and unrestorative sleep, and in some cases mini-episodes of oxygen deprivation during a critical window of brain development. This is linked to increased risk of behavioural and learning problems, which in turn affect a child’s academic performance. Growing research is linking these issues to structural changes in the brain. Some of these deficits may be partially irreversible even after snoring is addressed. These airway or breathing abnormalities are often overlooked because parents often think a lot of the common signs and symptoms are normal such as mouth breathing, snoring or audible breathing, tossing and turning during sleep, bedwetting, teeth grinding, poor attention, hyperactivity or being prone to meltdowns or tantrums. The other big problem is that as health professionals we learn very little on this within our training. It was only within the last week, a health professional from over east reached out to me to ask for a short list of research papers to send to GPs. She had a 3 year old patient with obstructive tonsils and persistent snoring. Her mum had gone to 5 different GPs for an ENT referral but all had said she didn’t meet the criteria for referral as there was no infection or tonsillitis. The mum’s concerns of snoring and her speech delay were completely dismissed. One of the many projects the Endeavour Group is involved in is creating a supporting reference list for professionals to learn more. A task that I committed to this week was to narrow the wealth of research linking snoring to increased risk of neurobehavioural deficits to no more than 5 key references. I’m sharing my thoughts on those I find most compelling here, to make it easier for other colleagues and families to save, access or share and advocate for other children in future. The great news is that each of these five articles are available free and in full via these links. 22.01.2022 Did you know breastfeeding promotes normal development of the muscles that are involved in chewing? The movements of the jaw also stimulate forward growth of t...he lower jaw. Breastfeeding is the single most modifiable influence on lower jaw growth in the first year of life. The first year of life is the most important window of peak jaw development. As a sleep trained dentist, I make devices for adult snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea that reposition the lower jaw forward and open the airway. My interest in tongue management stemmed from wanting to help more children breastfeed and achieve more normal jaw and airway development from birth. The mechanical benefits of breastfeeding are one more reason we need to promote, protect and support breastfeeding. #AirwayMatters

22.01.2022 Hmm I have experienced this in my past with the many years of working in the child care field when trying to do a cooking science activity This is probably why my own children cant cook....

22.01.2022 https://kellymom.com/nutrition/vitamins/lecithin/ If you are experiencing reoccurring blocked ducts then please seek the assistance of an IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation). Lecithin can aid in the symptoms of reoccurring blocked ducts but getting to the bottom of the cause is vital in a positive breastfeeding experience. 20.01.2022 Happy 1st Birthing Day to me 27 years ago I bought a beautiful baby girl into the world and my life changed completely.... I was responsible for this perfect little person and she was all mine (and my husbands) I was responsible to meet all her needs and more... it wasnt easy. My precious bundle had CDH (congenital dislocated hips) with harnesses, splints, hip spicas and many surgeries to follow..... she was so brave my beauty also had a true CMPI (cows milk protein... intolerance), there was no support, well none that I was aware of. We managed the best we could, manoeuvring through breastfeeding with these challenges. Get hands on from the beginning Getting involved in the daily care of your baby dressing, settling, playing, bathing and nappy changing is the best way to build your skills and confidence. These everyday activities also create lots of one-on-one time with your baby, which is the building block of a positive relationship. Another bonus is that its also good for your babys other parent to have a break. 2. Learn your babys cues Babies give cues or signals to what they need through their behaviour and body language. By really paying attention to your babys cues, over time youll learn how to work out what your baby needs. #dads #dadlife #daddy #fathersday #fatherhood #fatherhoodrocks #motherhoodcoach #motherhoodcoachingservices #parenthood #parentsupport

13.01.2022 Did you know that night time breastfeeding ‘ingredients’ actually aid sleep. Breastmilk produced at night contains significant levels of melatonin, the sleep hormone. Mothers melatonin levels naturally rise in the evenings in harmony with their circadian rhythms; this melatonin is then passed through their breastmilk to baby much like when baby was in utero. Tryptophan is also found in breastmilk which is an amino acid which also aids sleep.... As night falls, a mother will produce more prolactin, the hormone which governs the production of breastmilk = more milk produced at night. No wonder babies wake to feed more often at night when their mother is producing precious Liquid Gold. This is such a natural safety mechanism against the risk of SIDS. Feeding at night may often be more frequent, being shorter in duration than during the day #motherhoodcoachingservices #motherhoodcoach #ibclc #mothercraftnurse #sleepeducator #parentsupport #feedingexpert #homevisits #virtualconsultsavailable #phoneconsultsavailable #thehelpyoudeserve #booknow

12.01.2022 The Vagus Nerve is such an important nerve in the body. For an infant that relies on a carer to feed them either breast or bottle; it is vitally important to be aware of feeding issues. 09.01.2022 Prolactin The longer women breastfeed the more they hear comments suggesting that breastfeeding is depleting their nutrients and contributes to their fatigue. The opposite is true. Continuing breastfeeding is good for female health. Here is one recent example from a study done by Dr. Ramos-Roman (published in Diabetes in August 2020) which discusses ways in which breastfeeding plays a role in protecting women from Type 2 diabetes even many years after they have stopped bre...astfeeding. Breastfeeding changes the insulin sensitivity of organs that supply or demand sugars and fat in the breastfeeding women's bodies. This protects women against insulin resistance not only at the time when they are breastfeeding but long after they have stopped. This study suggests that it is prolactin - the hormone that is involved in breastmilk production - that causes breastfeeding women to have lower levels of fatty acids in their blood and lower amounts of fat in their livers. 07.01.2022 Some days are tough, often those feelings of why me can surface. Some days thoughts can race through your mind and it seems all too much. 07.01.2022 Having a new baby can put extra strain on your relationship with your partner. Try to stay positive and support each other as you learn how to parent together. Asking how your partner is going lets your partner know you care. Negotiating and sharing expectations is good practice for later parenting. This can be about everything from deciding on paid work arrangements to who cooks dinner. Look after yourself If youre well, youll be better able to look after your ...baby and support your partner. You can keep your energy up with healthy lifestyle choices and as much sleep and rest as you can even if its not at night. 06.01.2022 Fatherhood Coaching Services tips for today, following on from yesterday.... Connect through touch Physical touch makes your baby feel safe and secure and builds trust and connection with you. This kind of bonding with newborns also stimulates your babys brain development. You could try carrying and holding your baby as often as you can. If you hold her to your chest, she can hear your heartbeat. Talk to your baby as often as you can... Talk while youre carrying or changing your baby. For example, Lets get this nappy changed. That feels better, doesnt it? Heres a nice clean nappy. Dont cry well be finished soon. Every word baby hears helps develop his language and learning and strengthens your relationship with him. Telling stories, reading books or singing songs has the same effect. #newparent #newdad #parentingtips #consultant #familyguy #motherhoodcoach #fatherhood #motherhoodcoachingservices See more

05.01.2022 Todays Fatherhood tips.... Whether its your first or fifth baby, there are always new things to learn. You can find information by searching this website, talking with other dads and attending parenting groups, for example. And one of the best ways to learn is by doing spending lots of time caring for your baby. Accept or ask for help... If someone says, Is there anything I can do?, its OK to say Yes! Talk with your partner about when youll accept help from family, friends, colleagues or neighbours. It might be as simple as asking someone to buy some milk for you when they come over to visit. #perthdads #aussiedads #familyguy #aussieparents #perthparentsupport #perthibclc #perthparentingsupport #motherhoodcoachingservices #motherhoodcoach See more

04.01.2022 Fatherhood tips for today..... Breastmilk is the best food for your baby. Your support for breastfeeding can be vital while your partner is learning. You could give practical support a glass of water, another pillow or whatever she needs. Or if shes having trouble, you could encourage her to get help from an IBCLC - breastfeeding expert (me). Have some one-on-one time... This kind of time is about you and your baby. If you can create moments when your baby has your full attention, you can really tune in to your baby. This gives the two of you a chance to connect and bond. For example, it can be as simple as making faces at each other while you dress your baby. #fatherhoodmatters #newdaddy #supportivepartner #ibclccertifiedlactationconsultant #breastfeedinghelp #motherhoodcoach See more
