25.01.2022 I heard a rumour that a very large fast food chain has to ration out salad veg (lettuce, tomato) to each store this year as its getting harder to source the volume needed in Australia thats Australian grown. Apparently stores have been told to use wisely or they may run out by end of year. Just a rumour but scary if true that Aussie stock is becoming hard to get.....
25.01.2022 Haha sign of the times! We trick or treat in our street. Our daughter gathers up all the treats, We walk the dogs, all the neighbours have a chat and catch up, then we eat some lollies and usually I put them away and they end up being thrown out. But its heaps of fun and we are creating memories with no fear of foods

22.01.2022 This was my breaky today. It has protein, carbohydrates and fat. But I dont give a crap about that. I dont do any calculations or think about low carb, or low fat or high protein. ... There are many other aspects I take into consideration, such as: what can I eat quickly at the bench whilst getting ready, getting a 9 yr old ready, signing permission slips and coordinating a under 10s netball team. I also think: How hungry am I? what do I feel like? When am I next eating? What else am I eating today? We eat foods not macro nutrients. Enjoy food dont turn it into a chore

18.01.2022 I had a client who was skipping breakfast and I asked why, she said that shes not sure what to have anymore. She cant have the cereal that she likes as cereals are too high in sugar, cant have toast as well, you know, bread is bad, ... has no time for eggs or cooked breaky everyday, she was having fruit and yoghurt but its too cold and she was getting sick of it and that yoghurt is too high in sugar. so as she wasnt sure of the right choice she was confused and having nothing, feeling defeated, tired and couldnt focus in the morning as she was hungry. The problem with this is that not having breaky out of fear of food is doing more damage to her overall health than eating what she wants to eat. So she now has a meal plan that involves all the foods she likes, in moderation and balance and is happier and healthier without food guilt of this elusive perfect diet she thought she needed and felt like she was failing. Does trying to eat perfect or to others ideals affect what you eat?

15.01.2022 I had a lovely patient today who is 93! He held my hand as he told me about his Mums ginger cake and how she sifted the flour 3 times for her perfect scones. People came to visit at morning tea so they could eat what she had baked.... He cant believe people are going off gluten or that our food is so overly processed now. Food is such an amazing part of our life and our memories. How do you want to look back? What will you remember? I bloody love food!

14.01.2022 Warning: This post may not be popular! One thing I notice is that we drink too much! Majority of people I see drink alcohol everyday, a couple of beers after work, a few wines when cooking dinner or when the kids go to bed, a 6 pack on the weekend with friends. Its not uncommon and if you sat back and counted how many drinks you are having you might be surprised. I know I was;-)... Food may not be the only answer but its what we (and the media) focus on to be happier and healthier. What if the thing you need to change was cutting down on your alcohol? What are you really getting from the grog? Poor sleep, irritability, mood swings, overweight, tired, broke? Is it just a habit that has crept in daily and you can take it back a notch? ......Food for thought........

13.01.2022 I love love love this! I had a lovely patient who was in her 80s and she said her biggest regret was not playing with her kids more or swimming at the beach as she didnt like her body. She spent so much time covering up and dieting that she missed out on life and closed herself off from any fun. It was heart breaking and we both cried but it was a HUGE eyeopener for me personally.... Ironically, I was seeing her to to help her put on weight to help with recovery from a fall and a fractured hip, where she lost a lot of weight and was becoming malnourished. She said you will never be the weight you want at that time, lifes just like that. Be present in your life, we are all different shapes and sizes and may never be perfectly happy with our own shape but try and think of what matters in 5, 10 or 20 years time. What do you want to remember? Hiding your body, feeling ashamed or laughing and playing, feeling free?
11.01.2022 Read this post below. Is it refreshing to hear no ones perfect? Being a dietitian is my job, its not all i am. Im a woman, a brilliant wife, an imperfect mum, a great step mum, an average friend and am always evolving as a person. But I dont always eat a "perfect" diet and I rarely exercise. I know mechanics with broken down cars and a plumber with a toilet that continually runs. ... I do practice what I preach, balance, moderation and a beautiful relationship with food that doesnt involve guilt and fits in with our life.

Try this..... *Be Mindful* Think of what foods you really like. What nutrition you are getting from each food? Are you really enjoying the foods you crave? Are you full? Why do you want to keep eating? (Bored, unhappy, angry, lonely) Its just a start, remember small changes make big differences

10.01.2022 I made Paleo scones....... except for the wholemeal flour And the milk Oh and the jam Cavemen had cream and butter, didnt they? ... So confused! But i do know that Im delightfully full on jam and cream scones and i had fun in the kitchen with my offspring. Now thats living and making memories without having the fear of food

07.01.2022 Be the Dietitian..... Today I saw a lovely guy who was just diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and will probably be discharged from hospital needing daily insulin injections. This is a little run down about him. ... Tell me what you would suggest to help him. (Remember to be nice, no unfair judgment-we all have a different story and are at different stages of health.) 31 yrs old weight:140kg 178cm tall Has no idea about what diabetes is Diet history: Ist up has coffee with 4 sugars B) 4x toast (white) with marg and vegemite or peanut butter MT) 2x pies and 2x pkt chips L) 2x sandwiches D) curry and 5 cups white rice or steak 300g and deep fried chips Snacks: chips, choc, juice, lollies, muesli bars, take aways. 15-20 cans coke per day. He does the cooking as his wife doesnt know how to cook and doesnt want to. They just had a baby and have 2 older children 15 and 9 yrs old. Very limited income Want to make changes for the family but have no nutritional knowledge and feel overwhelmed where to start. What would you suggest to them?
07.01.2022 I just saw a lady who has cut out sugar and wheat from her diet and is feeling better. She asked why is she feeling so much better? Are these foods toxic like the media suggests? One word. No.... Take a look at my pic. Her diet before was low in fruit, veg, protein, nuts and basically low in nutrition. It was high in refinded carbs and sugar but its not bad there was just too much. She is feeling better as she took out some foods but that made her add in more nutritious options. She also started walking 30mins a day and is drinking water. Instead of cutting out foods try adding in some. Start with more veg!
06.01.2022 A client said that she uses spreadable butter as its better for you and doesnt have all the additives that marg does. There are so many things to address here but Ill try and keep it short. -Spreadable butter still has additives to make it spread.... -Is butter or marg really your biggest food/nutrition problem? -Are foods really good or bad? Could you just enjoy what you like in moderation? -Could you use a great Aussie olive oil or stick butter instead? -How much do you use? (We use a tub in about 6 mths so its not really a worry or focus for us.) -Could you use Aussie Avocados or a dip/chutney/sauce instead? See more

05.01.2022 Havent posted in ages.... did you miss me? Speaking to the ATODs (alcohol, tobacco and other drugs) guys at work today laughing (smirking) at how people are scared of grains, gluten, dairy and sugar. All our patients were admitted due to alcohol, cigarettes and ice. (Subsequently were malnourished)... Take home message: Enjoy your food, dont stress over so called "perfect" eating. Limit the amount of shit you eat. Dont do alcohol in excess. Dont smoke cigarettes or take ice. #winning
04.01.2022 Anyone keen on Aqua! Fantastic, low impact exercise, especially good if you have any injuries, knee or joint pain or struggle to walk/run for any reasons. Dont use the too hot/too cold excuse. Pool is heated and you will be glad you went!
03.01.2022 I bumped into a friend the other day who asked where I was working. When I said in a hospital surgical ward she was really surprised and said what does a Dietitian do there? Got me thinking that people dont really know what a Dietitian actually does. So im going to try and post a real story from my day. I have to be careful of patient confidentiality but hope it helps people to understand that we do more than weight loss!
03.01.2022 Have you heard of "Flexitarian"? Its eating vegetarian meals 1-2 times a week. Think you could do it? Its certainly one way of increasing the amount of vegies we eat.... Often we base the dinner meal aound what meat we want to eat, why not base it around what veg you want to eat? So many options: soups, potatos with coleslaw and cheese, lentils, curries, fritatas......
03.01.2022 What a loada shite! Whats with the 50%? Dont we want to know where the food is imported from not a vague 50% figure that means nothing to consumers. If this is the new country of origin labeling then its a waste of time and money. ... Seems to be protecting import relations and manufacturers rather than serve to educate Aussies to make an informed choice. What do you think? Is this labeling helpful to you as a consumer?
