17.01.2022 Members were treated to a great speaker on Nov 8. Retired Magistrate Antoine Bloemen spoke of his amazingly varied life. He was born in a German occupied Belgian village in 1941. Through his teenage years he worked in a college as a domestic and then as a merchant seaman. He migrated to America - serving as a paratrooper in the US Army; spending three years in Okinawa; met his wife and worked as a salesman in NYC. Migrating to Australia in 1972, he attended UWA graduating wi...th a law degree. Mr Bloemen ran his own legal firm and was appointed Magistrate for the Pilbara in 1995 and then the Kimberley in 1999 until 2008. He is most famously remembered for a "deal" he made with a young aboriginal offender, offering him a bike if he stayed on the right path for three months. That boy now works for Rio Tinto in the Pilbara. It was also a lovely reunion for a couple of Probus members, who knew Mrs Anne Bloemen who came with her husband. See more

16.01.2022 At our meeting on April 12 the speaker will be Angela Bowman from Australian Wildlife Conservancy. This group is the largest private owner and manager of land for conservation in Australia, protecting endangered wildlife across more than 6.5 million hectares in iconic regions such as the Kimberley, Cape York, Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre and the Top End. Recognising that ‘business as usual’ for conservation in Australia will mean additional extinctions, AWC is developing and implementing a new model for conservation. Sounds like very interesting morning in store!

03.01.2022 What a great day we had on Monday Nov 16! A bus load of members and friends went to Mandurah to take canal cruise. The weather was almost perfect although the early breeze was a tad cool. Several dolphins came to play as well. After lunch the trip home was quiet.

The workshops were responsible for building and maintaining railway rolling stock in the state for over 90 years. There is a move to establish a museum in the Workshops precinct to retain the history of the industry and those who worked there. Interested? 15.12.2021 The speaker at our next meeting is Antoine Bloemen, former magistrate in the Pilbara and the Kimberley. You may recall he offered to buy a delinquent boy a bicycle if he stayed out of trouble. He did and got a new bicycle for Christmas that year. Antoine writes: My talk is about an immigrant from being born in an German occupied Belgian village in 1941 through teenage years working in a college as a domestic and then in as a merchant seaman, migrating to America, serving as a paratrooper in the US Army, spending three years in Okinawa where I met my wife, working as a salesman in NYC, migrating to Australia in 1972, attending UWA graduating with a law degree, running my own legal firm and then being appointed Magistrate for the Pilbara in 1995 and then the Kimberley in 1999 until 2008.
