24.01.2022 Townsville HHS takes part in global antibiotic movement A global movement aimed at increasing awareness around appropriate and safe antibiotic use is un...derway this week as part of Antibiotic Awareness Week. Antimicrobial Stewardship Pharmacist Kerrie Aitken said that while almost everyone was aware of antibiotics, many were unaware of antibiotic resistance and the very real impacts it could have on them. Even if you rarely take antibiotics, you can get a resistant infection, Kerrie said. Antibiotic resistance happens when bacteria stop an antibiotic from working effectively, meaning some infections may be impossible to treat. This can occur when you overuse antibiotics or take them when they are not needed for example. Kerrie said breaking down the myths was an important first step to helping people realise just how important the message was. Antibiotic resistant infections can affect anyone, of any age, in any country, Kerrie said. It is the bacteria itself that comes resistant to antibiotics not the person. It’s important that we counteract antibiotic resistance at the start as once bacteria become resistant to antibiotics common infections will no longer be treatable and we don’t want that to happen. Kerrie said the following points would help patients to practice safe antibiotic use: 1. Don’t use antibiotics for viruses such as colds and flu - antibiotics don’t work for viruses, they only work on bacteria. 2. It is important to take antibiotics as prescribed by your doctor. 3. Always seek the advice of a qualified health care professional before taking antibiotics. 4. Do not take someone else’s antibiotics or use leftover antibiotics. You may not be using the right antibiotic for your needs and this can increase your risk of resistance. 5. Always practice good hand hygiene to prevent the spread of germs. Antibiotic Awareness Week runs from 18 24 November this year.
