25.01.2022 GRDC Updates online Tuesday 25 August - Mungbean agronomy and WUE Topics: 1. Mungbean yield gap and agronomy - Marisa Collins (La Trobe University) 2. Understanding WUE and patterns of water use in dryland and irrigated mungbeans for better management planning - Kathi Hertel (NSW DPI)... 3. Discussion session - Led by Paul Mcintosh (Pulse Australia/ AHRI) & Kerry McKenzie (PulseAg Consulting) Register here : https://grdc.com.au//2020/grdc-update-live-stream-mungbeans

25.01.2022 Doug Sands (DAF, Emerald) says their research work has shown two preferred times of sowing mungs in CQ: For dryland growers, a later sowing date (February to March) produced more reliable yields by avoiding weather conditions that cause high evaporative pressure on the plant. It does better from stored moisture. Irrigated growers can also benefit from a late summer planting. However, an earlier sowing date (December-January) can have higher yield potential because it can crea...te more dry matter from the higher radiation levels and longer day lengths. This is a high-risk strategy, however, as conditions around flowering can still be bad enough to reduce flower survival, regardless of soil water conditions. https://groundcover.grdc.com.au//its-all-in-the-timing-fo/

23.01.2022 Tom Noble has assembled the Australian Mungbean Diversity Set, which is composed of 466 lines that are representative of available phenotypic and genetic diversity. The 30 most diverse lines were then selected to build the trait discovery platform. This involved crossing each of the 30 lines with the commercial variety, Crystal. The crosses resulted in over 2000 progeny that make up the mungbean Nested Association Mapping (NAM) population. https://groundcover.grdc.com.au//plan/genomics-come-of-age

22.01.2022 GRDC WEBINAR Mungbean agronomy and WUE Tuesday 25 August - 9 am Mungbean yield gap and agronomy - Marisa Collins (La Trobe University) Field observations for profitable mungbean production - Kerry McKenzie (PulseAg Consulting)... 22.01.2022 Researchers have quantified the critical period of moisture vulnerability in mungbeans: Mungbeans are most vulnerable to drought stress during the pod filling phase. It is critical to ensure adequate moisture is available or has been applied by irrigation during this period. Drought stress during pod filling reduces the number of grains per pod and the overall number of pods per plant. Yield decreased in response to drought stress by 10-33% during vegetative growth, 5-2...7% during flowering and 53-75% from early-pod fill compared with well-watered. Yield response to drought differed between varieties. Mungbeans compensate for lower pod number by increasing carbon allocation to remaining pods - increasing individual grain weight and partially offsetting yield losses for stress occurring during flowering. Optimising sowing time or irrigation timing to avoid drought stress during pod-fill will improve grain yield stability. 18.01.2022 Delivered-packer prices for mungbeans are steady to a touch dearer on those quoted in April, with No. 1 grade at $1300/t, processing at $1200/t and manufacturing at $1100/t. Quality is mixed, and crops which had heavy and successive rain just prior to harvest have been downgraded due largely to discolouration. Yields have varied widely, being anywhere from 0.2 tonnes per hectare to 3t/ha, with most in the 1-1.5t/ha range, and April rain in Queensland fell in time to bolster y...ields on later-planted crops. https://www.graincentral.com//pulse-update-lentil-rally-c/ See more

15.01.2022 A new Mungbean variety with improved grain yield and greater resistance to Halo Blight has been launched in Queensland. To be released as Opal-AU in late 2020, its the sixth new variety developed by the National Mungbean Improvement Program. A program that has underpinned a quadrupling of Mungbean production in Australia since 2003.
