17.01.2022 The beauty in nature

17.01.2022 The Plant Identification Workshop presented by the Wildflower Society, Murdoch Branch which I attended today was terrific, lots of information and tips in a sup...portive environment. However my big discovery was ‘FloraBase’, a comprehensive database of Western Australian flora, available on open access (free of charge!) with some smart search features. Especially ‘Interactive Identification’ to identify a plant using morphology and geography. If like me you are unaware of FloraBase here’s the link (it contains a database of introduced weeds too). 15.01.2022 Shifting Sands: A Mobile Interactive Biophilic Landscape Shifting Sands is a ‘Living Lab’ aimed at encouraging communal and educational activities and experiences concerning both sustainable design and Perth’s unique landscape. At the same time, Shifting Sands is a piece of art. It is a symbolic representation of geomorphology, soil and flora and their dynamic character. Shifting Sands is a tangible outcome of the project Perth as a biophilic resilient city model in the time of climate change https://issuu.com//shifting_sands_uwa_school_of_design_202

12.01.2022 There are some great things happening in repairing the Wetlands to Waves nature corridor. 71,000 native plants sourced from local provenance seed have gone in this year to undertake repairs to the damaged land with many volunteers helping in the planting and weeding. Fauna monitoring using sensitive camera trapping has shown the abundance of the little Quenda as well as a few feral cats and foxes. There is also a lot of university research happening and so much more. Read about it all here. https://mailchi.mp/40a8cf10831d/rehabilitating-roe-3288118

03.01.2022 Celebrating Bernie Dixon - Inaugural Branch Member Bernie, who recently celebrated his 90th birthday, was one of our original members back in 1988 when the Murdoch Branch first formed. He served as President in 1995 and 1996 and put a lot of time into our committee. Bernie also led the Hibbertia Study Group for a decade from its inception in December 1977 for the Australian Native Plants Society - ANSPA... Our branch meetings often had many interesting flowering specimens displayed from Bernie's garden over the years, and through his wood turning skills, some lovely raffle prizes. Bernie received the Wildflower Society’s meritorious award in 2013. He is still gardening with a fine crop of lettuces among the Eremophila bushes! Bernie was very touched to receive a Murdoch mug in honour of his 90th birthday and sends us his best wishes.
