23.01.2022 School holidays are upon us, but a small, dedicated group of FRCers spend their time prototyping some of the mechanisms for our robot. Our even smaller sponsorship team was also hard at work identifying possible sponsorship candidates.

22.01.2022 Im hoping to have an operation FRC robot from Team 5663 for display and demonstration at the CRAM (Competition Robotics @ Murdoch) club table on thursday. This is one of the robots on the alliance that won the regional championship in Sydney this year, and then went on to the FRC World Championships in the US. If you are interested in robotics, or just having a look and maybe a drive of the robot please drop by the CRAM club table on thursday.

21.01.2022 Well, build week 3 is behind us and everything is looking good. We have a working drive base (still need to work out why it pulls to the left) that we drove around our carpark test track. We also started the brainstorming to work out what parts we need to design and fabricate to do the actual challenges of the competition. According to our analysis sandstorm is easy points, HAB is medium difficulty, but rocket cargo is "hardish". So what will our design look like? Stay tuned to see how we go.

18.01.2022 During a break in the rain we tested out our latest progress including the camera and the roller for the loader. It may be made out of reticulation pipe and adapters with a plumbing insulation cover, but it spins at 40kph. I think we were all a little surprised it held together at that speed and didnt fly apart.

18.01.2022 After some fine tuning it worked pretty well for a first attempt. Even the cargo loading mechanism worked - sort of !! Lizzie, Alex and Ben from the Horizons program joined FRC Team 7779 after the Horizons program.

18.01.2022 Well, we had an exciting build day. We were fortunate to have a visit from the local federal member, the Hon Ben Morton, last week. He was very impressed with the high level of skills the high school students were learning through FRC. Thanks very much to Ben and Jordan for taking the time to visit and see the hard work of everyone involved. You can read all about the visit here; https://www.facebook.com/BenMortonAU/

15.01.2022 We watched some of the South Pacific Regional matches during our Open Day --- what great timing that was. It was a perfect opportunity to show how exciting FRC could be for everyone involved. Well done to all the teams, what a terrific competition. Although the WA teams tried valiantly and 5663 was able to make it through to the finals, it was a shame that no one made it through to the Worlds this time around. Still, that was more than made up for with Jaci Brunning winning the Woody Flowers Award. Jaci and the rest of @CurtinFRC have been a great help getting the Murdoch team up and running so it was exciting to see this sort of effort rewarded. Congratulations Jaci.

15.01.2022 What a terrific Open Day and Information session on Saturday. Lots of students and parents came along to learn about our FRC team and give the FRC drive base a test run. We ended up with 14 students joining FRC team 7779. Well be starting the FRC build this Saturday, March 23 with the aim of competing in the Duel Down Under in July. Well keep this page updated with the build progress.

14.01.2022 testing of our FRC drive base

14.01.2022 Now that we are a registered FRC team we have a team number. So I am pleased to announce that the Murdoch Uni FRC team is number ............... Team 7779. ... Maybe its just me but this looks like a good, very lucky number. Lets hope it proves to be lucky for us.

13.01.2022 Time is getting tight to finish our robot but, fortunately, the team is really stepping up and the build is racing ahead. This week Rujula and Nick worked on the electronics, programmed the camera and intake mechanism control, and installed the compressor. Kenneth and Lachlan worked on intake pnuematics hardware. The rest of our hardware team worked on bumpers and on the secondary robot we use for school demos preparing it for the Murdoch Open day on July 28 and TechSpo 2019 on August 7 and 8 (https://www.techspo.com.au/).

13.01.2022 First test drive of our 2019 drive base

12.01.2022 Murdoch University and Curtin University (Thanks Tim and Jaci) recently coordinated an FRC display and demonstration at the Merredin College campus in the Wheatbelt region of WA. Team 7779 and Team 5663 had robots on display and interested students had a chance to race an FRC drive base around the parking area. There was a lot of interest from students and teachers in establishing an FRC team in Merredin. Hopefully well be able to help setup a Merredin team in time for next season.

12.01.2022 Its been a while since our last post because our small but dedicated team of roboteers has been hard at work designing and building our 2020 robot. Here are some photos of the robot and the climbing mechanism being tested. We decided early on to make a simple robot to score points in the low goal and climb at the end of the match. So our robot has a "bucket" to hold 5 power cells and a tilting base to deposit them in the low goal. The climbing mechanism is chain driven and in tests was easily able to lift the robot onto the switch. Enjoy.

12.01.2022 We are officially registered for the Duel Down Under and our build season has well and truly started. We have just about completed the drive base and will soon be starting to define the team structure. It seems that the team members have already started to drift into hardware and software so thats a good start. Here are some photos from week 2 of the build.

12.01.2022 Sometimes things just don't go according to plan. So it was with our climbing mechanism test. Who thought attaching a ratchet spanner would be so hard. Ahh well, two steps forward, one step back !! Thanks go to Ben, Alex and Lizzie from the "Murdoch Roboteers" program who joined Team 7779 and have been helping out for the last few weeks.

12.01.2022 If you are interested in joining the Murdoch FRC team dont forget to come along to the Murdoch FRC open day and information session tomorrow from 10 am to midday. Meet in Carpark 9, off Discovery drive near Building 198 (vet school parking area). Students, parents, friends and teachers welcome. Dave

11.01.2022 Rujula takes the new FRC robot for its first test drive while Nick and Sam look on. Looks like we might have our teams driver!

11.01.2022 After our drive problems last week, Nick our lead mentor and FRC veteran, quickly had the drive base running smoothly.

10.01.2022 Mentors from our FRC team recently travelled to fantastic Northam Senior High School to discuss all things FRC and demonstrate a basic FRC drive base to the teachers and students. There was also the 2019 competition robot from Curtin University Team 5663 there to show the great things that can be achieved in FRC in only 6 weeks. Everyone, including the Principal, seemed excited to see the robots and have a drive around the carpark. Maybe an FRC team in Northam soon ???

10.01.2022 Our small but definitely dedicated team spent a few hours on Saturday cutting and stripping wires, and generally playing around with electrical and electronic bits and pieces. After a little bit of programming, some tape and lots of cable ties, we had a completed drive base. Once we attached the battery we were pleased, and a little surprised, that all the lights turned the right colour. So it was a short trip outside the build area to the car park for a test drive. As you can see from the video everything went well and we all had a great time racing around the carpark. Thanks to everyone particularly our lead mentor Nick Berryman, for a fun and interesting time. FRC season 2019, here we come !!

10.01.2022 Once we moved the robot away from the goals to accomodate the bumper things didn't go so well. Enter "THE FLAP".

09.01.2022 Let the excitement begin !!! The 2019 FRC launch is just over 6 weeks away. Get in quickly to be part of this great adventure. Weve put together most of the pieces and were just about ready for the launch. Sponsorship and other funds are starting to roll in and we have several sponsorship opportunities to follow up.... The whole team is incredibly excited about the 2019 launch as it will be, in part, a celebration of 50 years since the first moon landing. For some info on this go here; https://www.firstinspires.org/rob//blog/2019-and-some-2018 So if you are interested in being part of the team or sponsoring the teams efforts to provide high school students with advanced STEM skills and capabilities, please contact us - [email protected].

08.01.2022 Team 7779 and the build are progressing nicely. We have some key team roles filled by interested and capable students. Lachlan, our resident CAD and 3D printing expert is busy creating a complete CAD drawing of our robot and has already printed some parts using Murdochs Up Box + 3D printers. Our programming lead, Rujula has only just started but has a basic autonomous mode operating. Trinity, a newcomer to Team 7779, is interested in media and marketing and has been busy creating a website for Team 7779. Look out for this in the next few weeks. Hopefully well soon have photos of something more than a few robot parts to show.

07.01.2022 The first test build is complete and we now have a basic drive base. This was the first time we have tried the build space and everything seemed to go well. A few extra tools would have made things easier but all-in-all a good job all around. Everyone enjoyed the experience and were all looking forward to finishing the build with the electronics and programming next Saturday, Nov 3. If you want to drop by for a look or to help, we meet in Carpark 9, Murdoch University, near Discovery Drive at 11am. Our build space is in Building 198 (the large building on Discovery Drive with the red front).

07.01.2022 FRC drive base build week 3

05.01.2022 Don't forget the Murdoch University FRC Team 7779 Open Day on this Saturday November 16 from 10am to 12 midday. It's a great chance to see our fabulous robot building facilities, meet some mentors, and see what a great opportunity the FRC program is. Of course if you are interested we would be thrilled to have you join our team for the 2020 FRC season. See you all on Saturday

04.01.2022 Sometimes things just dont go according to plan.

03.01.2022 With the fantastic support of Tim Keeley, Luan Heimlich from FRC Australia, and Team 5663 we now have enough FRC parts to start a test build. Thanks everyone. We will split the test build over 2 weekends. This Saturday Oct 27, from 11am to 4pm, will be the mechanical build of the drive base. Next Saturday, Nov 3 same time, will be the electronics and final assembly. If everything works well be able to drive the base after all this. Well meet in carpark 9, off Discovery Drive near the Vet Clinic at 11am.

03.01.2022 Now that the students and mentors in the Murdoch FRC team have successfully completed the drive base test build, there will be a bit of a break while we work in the background to setup all the parts to complete the Murdoch FRC team structure. The next major milestone in the team development will be the FRC season launch on Jan 5. As things currently stand, the plan is for for the team to join with other Perth-based FRC teams at a joint kick-off event at Curtin University. As soon as we have more details of the kick-off event well let you all know. If you are interested in joining the Murdoch FRC team as a high school member or as a mentor, just email the team. We still have a limited number of spaces available for the 2019 FRC season. Our email is; [email protected].

03.01.2022 Here are some more photos of the build over the last few weeks. This is also the heart of Team 7779. On the left is lead mentor Nick Berryman then Imogen, Logan, Jet and Kasun. Great job everyone.

02.01.2022 Our now fully functional drive base was flying, literally.

01.01.2022 Our "bucket" worked.

01.01.2022 Dont forget the Murdoch University FRC Team 7779 Open Day on this Saturday November 16 from 10am to 12 midday. Its a great chance to see our fabulous robot building facilities, meet some mentors, and see what a great opportunity the FRC program is. 01.01.2022 Some Team 7779 mentors also mentored in the recent "Murdoch Roboteers" Horizons program. This 3 week program is designed to introduce year 11 students to university life and help them develop study skills to assist in their year 12 studies. For the "Murdoch Roboteers" the students built the 2019 Everybot designed by FRC team 118 "Robonauts".

01.01.2022 Once we moved the robot away from the goals to accomodate the bumper things didnt go so well. Enter "THE FLAP".

01.01.2022 Success! We have a drivable prototype of our robot. As this is our first build we have based our design on the FRC "Everybot" by Team 118 but with our own loading mechanism design and a few other tweeks that we think will improve on the "Everybot". We have a temporary working name for our team as well "Under Pressure". Seems to be pretty self explanatory to me.
