12.01.2022 It is 105 years since the last Australian troops were evacuated from Gallipoli, with the final boats departing Suvla under cover of the morning darkness. Overal...l, 36,000 troops were evacuated over five nights, in what was arguably one of the greatest accomplishments of a very costly campaign. In trying to take the peninsula from the Ottomans, 44,000 Allied soldiers were lost. Lest we forget! #rslwamateship See more

11.01.2022 For veterans that are ex-serving, it has definitely helped with social aspects because when you leave service there’s a big void for social communication and i...nteractions. We feel like VGA gives them an outlet for fun and a sense of belonging. Veteran Gaming Australia (VGA) is building a community of veterans through a shared love of video games. Founded by Army Corporal Samuel Harris, the group has grown to over 600 members since launching in April 2021. Learn more about VGA’s story here. http://ow.ly/bsAw50F0N5r

10.01.2022 #OTD Charge of the 4th Light Horse Brigade at Beersheba The charge of the 4th Australian Light Horse at Beersheba late in the afternoon of 31 October 1917, is... remembered as the last great Australian cavalry charge. The assault on Beersheba began at dawn and involved the infantry divisions of the British XX Corps with artillery and air support. Despite repeated attacks, the Allies were unable to capture the town by mid afternoon. With time running out for the Australians to capture Beersheba and its wells before dark, Lieutenant General Harry Chauvel, the Australian commander of the Desert Mounted Corps, ordered Brigadier General William Grant, commanding the 4th Light Horse Brigade, to make a mounted attack directly towards the town. Chauvel knew from aerial photographs that the Turkish trenches in front of the town were not protected by barbed wire. The Australian Light Horse was to be used purely as cavalry for the first time. Although they were not equipped with cavalry sabres, the Turks who faced the long bayonets held by the Australians did not consider there was much difference between a charge by cavalry and a charge by mounted infantry. The Light Horse moved off at the trot, and almost at once quickened to a gallop. As they came over the top of the ridge and looked down the long, gentle open slope to Beersheba, they were seen by the Turkish gunners, who opened fire with shrapnel. But the pace was too fast for the gunners. After three kilometres Turkish machine-guns opened fire from the flank, but they were detected and silenced by British artillery. The rifle fire from the Turkish trenches was wild and high as the Light Horse approached. The front trench and the main trench were jumped and some men dismounted and then attacked the Turks with rifle and bayonet from the rear. Some galloped ahead to seize the rear trenches, while other squadrons galloped straight into Beersheba. The 4th and 12th Light Horse casualties were thirty-one killed and thirty-six wounded; they captured over 700 men. The capture of Beersheba meant that the Gaza-Beersheba line was turned. Gaza fell a week later and on 9 December 1917, the British troops entered Jerusalem. The Australian victory at Beersheba marked one of the last great charges of mounted troops in history, the Australian Light Horse Brigade captured the town and secured crucial water wells. Their victory marked the beginning of the end of the war in the Middle East. --------------------------------------------------------------- If you spot an error, please send me a message. 10.01.2022 The scarlet bloom of the poppy can be seen everywhere on Remembrance Day. But why did this beautiful flower become a symbol of the human cost of war?

09.01.2022 The Normandy landings, also known as D-Day, took place today in 1944. The largest seaborne invasion in military history, D-Day marked the beginning of the libe...ration of Nazi-occupied Western Europe and resulted in the loss of over 4,400 Allied troops. 3,000 Australian service members were involved in the Normandy campaign, providing valuable support to the Allied ground forces by attacking German military units and supply lines. Today we pause to remember all the military personnel who fought so bravely on D-Day, especially those who never made it home.

08.01.2022 #OTD Two Australians murdered in Vietnam Today we pause to remember the life and service of two Australian soldiers who were murdered on Christmas whilst serv...ing in Vietnam. The two men were 214101 Sergeant Wallace James Galvin (32), and 4410968 Sergeant Allan Brian Moss (22). Both men were serving in South Vietnam at the time of their death, Wallace with Headquarters 26 Company RAASC and Allan with 52 Supply Platoon RAASC. On Christmas Day, members of the Sergeants Mess were enjoying a relaxing beer at the bar in Nui Dat when three gunshots were heard. Initially thought to be a VC sniper attack it was shortly established to be something much worse. The bodies of two dead sergeants and one seriously wounded were located within minutes. Enemy fire was ruled out as the cause and the shocking truth revealed: Private Paul Ferriday had taken his SLR and commenced to fire indiscriminately into the Sergeants Mess. Private Ferriday was taken into custody by the Military Police and an investigation conducted. Private Ferriday was found guilty of two charges of murder and one of malicious wounding on the 6th of March 1971. Although later reduced to manslaughter and assault occasioning bodily harm on appeal, his defence of insanity was rejected at both hearings. He was ultimately sentenced to ten years with hard labour and served eight years of that term. Today, let us pause to not only remember the two men who were tragically killed but also all those uniformed men and women who are unable to be there with their families on this day. --------------------------------------------------------------- If you spot an error, please send me a message.
