13.01.2022 The election results for the Greens in the ACT and New Zealand/Aotearoa over the weekend is proof that Greens in Govt can deliver for people and the planet. Dur...ing this climate emergency coupled with obscene, growing levels of inequality, more people are turning towards the Greens and our vision for a sustainable, compassionate and fair future. Watch my speech to parliament about how much Greens are achieving around the world. And find out in the comments how you can join our movement.
12.01.2022 Don't worry, it's a safe space.
10.01.2022 Koala is a dirty word in Nat land.
08.01.2022 I dislike extremely long posts on social media - and you can quote me on that! Having said that here is an extremely long post about how why I want Randwick Cit...y Council to steal a good idea on local electricity generation from Hobson Bay Council in Victoria., which is setting up a Virtual Power Plant (VPP). It happens tonight. MOTION BACKGROUND One form of a VPP or Virtual Power Plant (or Micro Grid) can be the linking up of multiple solar arrays on separate homes or business across one or more local streets to create a power supply mechanism. This would be virtually similar to the large coal fired generators used by well-known commercial power company retailers. A VPP is different to normal power companies in that it usually collects power locally in one geographical area (like Maroubra) - and then feeds that electricity back to other houses or businesses in that same area. To do this it uses the electricity grid system like normal power companies. But unlike them a VPP is not intended to ship power in from large generators that can be hundreds of miles away. In theory a VPP could consist of dozens of Maroubra households joining all their solar arrays in a legal entity to sell their surplus electricity back through the power lines to other homes or businesses in those streets. Household solar batteries and smart meters play a key role. WHAT A VICTORIAN COUNCIL IS DOING A VPP need not be a collection of private homes but could be built up from arrays on Council owned buildings such as town halls and depos. https://www.gcom-oceania.org//hobsons-bay-developing-a-vir Hobson Bay Council in Victoria has announced this month that it will use 40 of its council owned roofs to put together a VPP capable of supplying 4MW to where it is needed elsewhere in the LGA. Exact technological details of how the system will be built won’t be available until after Hobson Bay awards the contract to a construction company. But the Victorian Council expects to save ratepayers significant money by reducing the administration’s power bills. The Council also states that it intends to use VPP’s to help reach zero greenhouse emissions from its own operations by 2020 and from those of the broader community by 2030. It is also intending make solar power available to tenanted residents as well as those of ratepayers. The VPP also enables the council to install systems on tenanted buildings, with both the Hobson Bay Council and the tenant benefiting financially from the investment. RANDWICK CITY COUNCIL My motion to our own Randwick Council meeting tonight is intended to allow us to monitor the success or otherwise of the Hobson Bay project rather than re-inventing the wheel. It is a watch and wait proposal. TEXT OF MOTION: That Council notes the anticipated contract to be announced for a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) scheme intended to achieve zero net greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 from both Hobson Bay City Council operations and from that of the broader community in its LGA including renting households. That Council responds by bringing back a report to Councillors on the feasibility of achieving lowered local greenhouse gas emissions and power bill relief for our own residents and businesses via a Virtual Power Plant scheme.
02.01.2022 Farmers have just decided that they want a target of zero emissions by 2050. But the same Coalition that is itself politically terrified of articulating a workable strategy on Climate Change has responded by saying that it rejects this new National Farmers Federation target on the grounds that the body has not articulated a strategy for its achievement. This is national government by the application of Catch 22. Whats that old saying? "If you can't lead then get out of the way!"
