24.01.2022 The November #WoodlandBirdoftheMonth is the White-winged Chough The White-winged Chough (Corcorax melanorhamphos) is one of only two surviving members of the Australian mud-nest builders family, Corcoracidae. It is the only member of the genus Corcorax. From a distance, the White-winged Chough may be confused with one of the Crows or Ravens, Corvus sp., but the curved bill and red eye distinguish it from these birds. Crows and Ravens also lack the white wing patch. ... Choughs can also be confused with Currawongs, Strepera sp., as both have white wing patches and mostly black plumage; however, the white patches are smaller in Currawongs. Currawongs also have yellow eyes and a different shaped beak to Choughs. Choughs are known to kidnap young from another family. The kidnapped youngster is fed for the first season, then recruited into the feeding team the next year. This results in a bigger ‘family’ that can raise more young. There are three main threats to young choughs: starvation; predation by nest-robbing birds, particularly currawongs; and kidnapping or sabotage by neighbouring chough families. Larger family groups are better able to deal with all three threats. Their flight is a mixture of slow, deep flapping and short glides. They are not particularly strong or agile fliers and spend most of their time on the ground. The White-winged Chough is often first noticed by a mournful, descending whistle. If disturbed, it gives a ratchet-like call. White-winged Choughs are found in open forests and woodlands. They tend to prefer the wetter areas, with lots of leaf-litter, for feeding, and available mud for nest building. 21.01.2022 Farmers across the region are being urged to be on the lookout for signs of fall armyworm, following a number of suspected cases around the Finley area. While NSW Department of Primary Industries is working to confirm the diagnosis, we are asking farmers to be regularly monitoring their crops. Growers, particularly those growing sorghum, cotton and maize, need to look for early signs of crop damage, such as windowing of leaves, as small larvae are difficult to identify. ... If you think you’ve found the signs of fall armyworm call the Exotic Plant Pest Hotline 1800 084 881. To find out more about fall armyworm visit https://www.lls.nsw.gov.au/faw and www.dpi.nsw.gov.au//insect-pests-and-plant-d/fall-armyworm

12.01.2022 Arrowhead grows quickly and invades wetlands, natural watercourses and irrigation channels. It reduces water flows and is expensive to remove. It also outcompet...es native water plants and reduces food and habitat for fish. Arrowhead seedlings emerge in spring and are most visible in summer. It has strap-like leaves underwater and long arrow-shaped leaves that grow out of the water on stems up to 55 cm long.
