29.01.2022 Murray Bros recently teamed up with JD, the "MushyKing" and his team, and conducted a series of in-store demos, to promote Korean mushroom varieties such as oyster, king and enoki. Demonstrations were held at Murray Bros customer retails stores in Waterford, Underwood, Helensvale, Sunnybank Hills and Harbourtown.

Article from FreshNews November 2021 Two new faces have joined the Brisbane Markets Limited (BML) Board, ready to serve as part of the new-look team leading the fruit and vegetable industry-based owner and manager of Brisbane Markets.... Brismark confirmed the appointed of two new Industry Directors, Nicole Radice and Stephen Edwards, as part of BML’s 2021 Annual General Meeting. In accordance with BML’s Constitution, Brismark appoints four Industry Directors to the BML Board, with Ms Radice and Mr Edwards joining Bruce Hatcher and Stuart Lummis in these appointments. Ms Radice is a Partner in the corporate advisory and governance practice of Hopgood Ganim Lawyers, specialising in the areas of corporate law, corporate governance and due diligence. Mr Edwards is Deputy Chair of Brismark and also Managing Director of Murray Bros, one of the larger wholesalers in the Brisbane Markets.

A: I came to Australia from Yorkshire in England in 2000. My first job was as a salesman at John Potters in the Brisbane Markets. I worked there for 6 years until the company was bought and merged with United Lettuce. I stayed there until joining Murray Bros in August 2020, so I have worked in the Markets for 20 years. Q: What are you most excited about, in joining the Murray Bros team? A: I’m looking forward to a new challenge and working with long-time friends. Q: What products do you sell? A: I’m selling mainly salad and vegetable lines like brussel sprouts, lettuce, baby gem lettuce, broccoli, celery, leeks, fennel, red cabbage, sugar loaf cabbage and wombok. Q: What do you like to do in your spare time? A: Outside work, my love is golf and also my lovely wife Lesley, haha!! Plus our 2 cats Ralph and Alfie. 17.01.2022 Yesterday Murray Bros congratulated Bob Jones and celebrated his 25 years with the company! It truly is a wonderful (and rare!) milestone, and Murray Bros is so thankful to Bob for the pride he puts in fulfilling his role every day. Bob has worked as a labourer, shed manager, salesman and now is an integral part of the avocado ripening team in our A1 warehouse. Outside of work, Bob spends most of his time in his backyard, the golf course (!) and spending precious time with his family, including young grand children. Congratulations Bob and we hope you'll be with us for many years yet!

16.01.2022 10 YEARS ON, WE REMEMBER. Today, 10 years ago, the Brisbane River broke its banks and peaked 2 days later. The Brisbane Markets were totally inundated with flood water and the damage was valued at over $100 million. ... Thanks to the hard work of market employees (including Murray Bros employees), and assistance from the Army, the Brisbane Markets were operating again in under 60 hours after flood water receded. Murray Bros was very quick to bring in generators and equipment to clean up our trading floor and sheds and negotiated off-site space from which to continue supplying customers not affected by the floods, in particular the supermarkets. Our administration team set up and worked from our General Manager’s kitchen! Many staff will remember the stench of rotten fruit and how difficult it was to even remain upright as you cleaned, as the mud was so slippery. Here are a few photos that show the extent of the damage, and the physical and emotional toll on Murray Bros and all market staff, through that disastrous event.

15.01.2022 Last Friday, Murray Bros held our staff Golf Day, which we hope to make an annual event. The winning team for 2021 was Mason, Dom, Stephen Edwards and Joel Richardson, who get extra bragging rights for winning in the year we celebrate Murray Bros 100 years! Special mention also goes to Lindsay Rosenthal who got closest to pin on the day! So good to be able to socialise with colleagues and unwind from the stress of the markets for a few hours (although some would say golf is ...even more stressful?!) Until next year.....

14.01.2022 MURRAY BROS IS EXCITED TO INTRODUCE.... GEORGE VALIOTIS!! Q: How long have you worked in the industry, and in what roles?... A: My family have had fruit shops since 1982 which I worked in while I was still in school and then I started my own business with my Father in 1990 at Graceville where I was buying fresh produce from the Brisbane Markets including Murray Bros where I built up relationships with many of the staff there. I then sold the business in 2005 and started working at the Brisbane Markets and finally joined the Murray bros team in July 2020. So I have been involved in both buying and selling fresh produce for over 30 years. Q: What are you most excited about, in joining the Murray Bros team? A: I am very excited to work with an amazing team that I have known for a very long time and the challenges that it brings to make the business even more successful. Q: What products do you sell? A: I'm mainly selling vegetable lines such as brussel sprouts, lettuce, baby gem cos, cabbages, baby broccoli and many more. Q: What do you like to do in your spare time? A: I love to spend my spare time with my wonderful wife Tina and daughters Antonia and Stephanie. We like to get away occasionally to the Coast and also play golf. Q: Favourite fruit? A: It's hard to name a favourite fruit, but I enjoy watermelon, blueberries, cherries and lychees just to name a few. Q: Favourite vegetable? A: Baby broccoli, carrots and spinach.

09.01.2022 Works have commenced in preparation for a new extension to the southern elevation of the Murray Bros warehouse, Building A1. The new extension will provide an additional 160m2 of floor area and will house two multi-function fumigation rooms, which can also be used for gas ripening and fast cooling of fresh produce. It will also include a load out area complete with a new hydraulic dock leveller. The block wall that supports the concrete slab is almost complete, including unde...r slab fill and compaction. To accommodate the extension, a section of the fire sprinkler ring main will be relocated. The project commenced early in July and is estimated to be completed by late October. 07.01.2022 The new extension to the Murray Bros warehouse provides an additional 160m2 of floor area and houses two multi-function fumigation rooms, which can also be used for gas ripening and fast cooling of fresh produce. It also includes a load out area complete with a new hydraulic dock leveller. The facility is designed to enhance Murray Bros’ range of third party logistics and export/import services. Murray Bros Managing Director, Stephen Edwards, said providing fumigation service...s was a focus for the development. This extension completes our business model by ensuring we can look after all aspects of the importation of fresh produce, particularly if imported products require fumigation to obtain biosecurity clearance to be released in Australia, Mr Edwards said. Brisbane Markets Limited (BML) CEO, Andrew Young, said the extension was another example of BML meeting its commitment to supporting Tenants by providing the infrastructure necessary to assist their growers, their premises and the services they offer. Mr Edwards said he expected the internal fitout and audits complete before the end of the year. Murray Bros, BML and contractor SBP Australia (SBPA) worked very well together to achieve approval of the development application and the process of dealing with BML and SBPA in relation to the construction has been fantastic. It has been a great team effort from everyone involved to achieve the common objective of getting it built and running as quickly as possible, Mr Edwards said. 05.01.2022 IN THE NEWS... The latest edition of "Fresh Source" Winter 2020, ran an article titled "Women Dive into Diverse Roles." Our General Manager, Susan Lewis, was interviewed and featured in the final story.... "Susan Lewis started in an administration role at Murray Bros 22 years ago and worked her way up to General Manager. She said she has witnessed a shift in attitudes and more women taking on varied roles within the markets.... "Over time, I have seen women being more vocal and involved in all sectors of the industry, and the men have been very supportive of this change. I have had some very good male role models who have guided and supported me to get to where I am today," Mrs Lewis said. Mrs Lewis said she faced push back in her earlier years but learnt very quickly to stand her ground. "I learned to not be afraid of the challenges when in confronting situations and this created mutual respect," she said." 02.01.2022 Murray Bros was happy to recently provide sponsorship to the 2019 FNQ Growers Dinner, held on 6 September. The dinner celebrates the achievements of the industry and its grower members and announces the winner of the prestigious Charlie Nastasi Horticultural Farmer of the Year award. This year, well known Innisfail banana growers, Frank and Dianne Sciacca, took out the award for their environmentally friendly farming practices. Here's a few photos of the event set up.

29.12.2021 CONGRATULATIONS ZIGGY!! Yesterday, our colleague Ziggy Chmielarshi placed 3rd in the Brisbane Markets Forklift Operator of the Year Grand Final for 2021! It is quite an achievement considering Ziggy has been away from the markets for almost 12 months, however for Ziggy, forklift driving is "just like riding a bike!" He felt a little nervous on the day, but said he's been doing this for so long now, that his experience just kicked in and he was able to secure 3rd place. He thi...nks he may have had a secret weapon though...one of the brand new forklifts purchased recently by Murray Bros! Congrats again Ziggy, from all your colleagues at Murray Bros!

07.12.2021 At this year's BML Gala Ball, Stephen Aistrope was one of the award recipients acknowledged and celebrated for 40 years of service at the Brisbane Markets. In fact, it's been 46 for Stephen! 25 of them have been with Murray Bros, which is another amazing milestone! Fresh Source Magazine, Issue 73, page 30 included this interview with Stephen..... Stephen Aistrope first came to the market with his father who had a door-to-door fruit truck and Ireland's Fruit Exchange asked if ...he would like to give working at the market a go. Mr Aistrope started sweeping the floor and packing orders, and he was asked to look after the packing operation from the shed. From there he wrote to Peter Ireland, asking if he could become a salesman on the selling floor. "When I first started there, there were no pallets, no pump jacks, no forklift, not cold rooms, no warehouses - nothing like what there is today" Mr Aistrope said. "Each salesman was in charge of his own barrow, and I remember waking up in the middle of the night worried because I couldn't remember where I'd put mine. I was worried about losing my trolley!" CONGRATULATIONS STEPHEN! Your service to both Murray Bros and the wider markets is certainly valued, and deserves celebrating!
