20.01.2022 With all the magpies about at the moment, we thought it was a good time to remind people about fledgling season. Baby magpies leave the nest before their tail feathers have grown and can live on the ground being fed and protected by their parents during the day and are hidden in the undergrowth overnight. Members of the public sometimes confuse this act of nature with them being deserted or in distress. Many people think they are doing the right thing by performing a rescue... & bringing the baby magpies in to us. In reality, a majority of these will actually end up being juveniles that are learning to fly under the supervision of their parents. Obviously, if the baby magpie is on a road or in a back yard where there are cats or dogs, sometimes intervening is the only option. In this case, simply relocate the magpie to the closest safe place. If there is no immediate danger, then please leave them be

14.10.2021 Spring is in the air It’s the time of year where vet clinics get multiple phone calls about young birds on the ground unable to fly or fly very far. This is called fledgling, it’s a normal cycle of most birds life. A fledgling bird is a young bird that’s recently left the nest and may not be able to fly yet, they’ll learn to fly in their own time. In the mean time their parents are on watch close by, even if you can’t see them, making sure they are well feed and safe. If you happen to find a fledgling bird it’s ideal to leave them be and only move them in they’re in harms way (eg. on a road).
