22.01.2022 MOLESWORTH Wind back the clock in Molesworth. The landscape setting of the Molesworth district is defined by the steep, rolling hills to the north and s...outh, and fertile floodplains. A popular fishing and camping destination, this quaint little town is hidden away from the bustle of Melbourne and a favourite for those seeking down time and a touch of riverside fun. Hume and Hovell passed through the area in 1824 and by 1840 extensive squatting runs were established in the Molesworth area. The Pig and Whistle gold mine opened in 1868 and the first bridge over the Goulburn River opened in 1874. These days things are a little quieter and the old rail way line serves as part of the Great Victorian Rail Trail, popular with walkers, cyclists and horse riders. EASY DRIVES: The Scenic Molesworth/Dropmore Road is one of Molesworth’s hidden treasures. Starting at the Goulburn Valley Highway, Molesworth and heading towards Caveat. From the Caveat end of the road you can then go full circle back through Yea or Yarck. This 14 km scenic country lane takes you back in time as it travels along the beautiful Goulburn river flats. NATURE ADVENTURE: The Molesworth State Wildlife Reserve is a beautiful natural reserve encompassing Molesworth Goulburn Lagoons and also worth a visit. A unique landscape of flood wetlands and horse shoe shaped lagoons it holds a wealth of flora and fauna. With a rich treasure of wildlife visitors often stumble across all sorts of locals, from echidnas and koalas to wombats and wallaby’s. If you love fishing, the Goulburn River offers up the goods and with plenty of shady banks to choose from, it is popular with anglers of all levels. Need some down time? Up for some fishing? Looking for a new camping holiday location? This might just be it! All the details? Check out: https://www.greatvictorianrailtrail.com.au/molesworth/ https://www.molesworthreserve.com.au/

18.01.2022 TAGGERTY Gateway to everywhere Located just beyond the stunning Cathedral Ranges and between Alexandra and Buxton you'll find the quaint township of Tag...gerty. Sat on the Acheron River, which flows past the town it's the gateway to some of the highlights of the region. Like many spots in the region, it was established following the discovery of gold in the area and was once home to a butter factory. There are some beautiful buildings here including the Mechanics Institute dating back to 1898. Today you'll find only a general store here but Taggerty's location make it an ideal location to base yourself from to explore further. There are a number of B&B's in the area and the BIG4 Taggerty Holiday Park, which has great river frontage to get set up for an escape and explore the surroundings. ESCAPE IDEAS: 1Stop in at the Village Park with its BBQ and picnic area and access to the river or the hidden Little River area (on the right as you come into Taggerty) with picnic benches and nice loop walk across the river and through the centre of Taggerty. Both are perfect spots to stretch the legs and relax by the river. 2Drive the short 15 mins to the awesome Cathedral Ranges. There's something for everyone here, with river play, riverside strolls and some more challenging walks up to high peaks. Pitch a tent and stay the night at one of the campgrounds here! 3If you have a 4WD, why not escape into the hills? The Black Range is only a stone's throw from Taggerty and there are endless trails to explore through the bush as well as on the Blue Range behind the Cathedral Ranges. 4Lake Eildon - another short 20 minute drive will land you at Eildon with water opportunities galore and numerous awesome walks up above the lake. 5Time your stay with one of the Taggerty 4 Seasons Market or Twilight markets, which bring together some of the best food and wine produces in our region. 01.01.2022 LOVE A LOOKOUT? Everyone loves a good vantage point to take in the world below. Here are 5 of the best we love across our region: 1 Murchison Gap Lookout - ...Strath Creek Named after John Murchison an original squatter of one of the three original squatting runs in the district, this lookout sits right on the boundary of our region. A great platform juts out from the side of the hill here and it's a killer sunrise spot with the sun coming up behind the hills beyond. This area is known as the 'Valley of a Thousand Hills' and with the right light casting overlapping silhouettes you'll see why. 2 Frank Thomson Reserve - Kinglake Set on the edge of the Kinglake Ranges this lookout really brings home just how close Melbourne is to our awesome region. The small reserve area is a great spot for a picnic and taking in the view of the city beyond! 3 Keppel Lookout - Marysville This is one of those spots that pops up in most photo shoots in the area and it's easy to see why. The view over Marysville and to the Cathedral Ranges beyond is breathtaking and it's a spot that's lucky enough to get snow in winter at times, adding to the magic. There are two options to get up here - a strenuous (but great) walk from the valley below which can be linked with Steavenson Falls or you can drive a unsealed road up to within 20 metres of the lookout. Definitely worth a visit. 4 Mt Pinniger Lookout - Eildon Known by some but not all, this is a great vantage point to take in the majesty of Lake Eildon and the course of the Goulburn River. You can watch the various watercraft far below and take in the dramatic views of the surrounding wooded peaks. 5 Acheron Cutting Lookout - Alexandra This is definitely one to catch at the start of the day. Often sitting just above the low morning fog in the river valley below this expansive view takes in a wide panorama of peaks and views of the expansive farmland below. The colours here are often majestic. Ideal for an enviable photo or two. One of the best things is that all of these spots are accessible by car and an easy addition to you next visit to the region. In support of the latest measures to control COVID-19 regarding non-essential travel, we suggest you add these great spots to your bucket list rather than visit now. We'll see you up here to enioy the views when safe to do so!
