12.01.2022 As Council advised Friday, it only became aware of the Yumaanda Gathering on the evening of Thursday 21 January. The event organisers were advised not to proceed with the event on Friday 22 January, as it did not have necessary approvals pursuant to legislation administered by Council, including the Planning and Environment Act 1987 and Building Act 1993. Further, there was not sufficient time for the organisers to obtain such approvals for the event as scheduled. Unfortuna...tely, event organisers have chosen not to follow Council’s advice and have continued with the event. Council considered attempting to stop the event, and as part of its consideration, amongst other things, consulted with Victoria Police. Council concluded that attempting to break-up or stop the event at that very late stage could potentially create greater risks for event attendees and the community, particularly having regard to the matters within Council’s statutory functions. Both Council and Victoria Police have been patrolling the event over the weekend and will continue to do so, with relevant emergency services on standby. Once the event is finished, Council will consider whether it takes legal action against the event organisers, however, the main focus at present is ensuring the safety of those attending and the safety of the community.
