25.01.2022 Vietnam Veteran’s Day 18th August (prev. Battle of Long Tan remembrance) Aboriginal people first fought in the frontier wars (against colonialisation) and then; further abroad for their kin and country; side by side with their fellow Australians (even though they themselves in earlier wars, were not recognised and had to enlist under an Alias), ... ever present and ready to die for one another as far back as the Boer Wars in South Africa, "Being mates and having each other’s ...back wasn’t founded on your culture or colour & the Vietnam War was no exception." With almost 60,000 Australians serving across a decade of conflict (1962 - 1972), we remember and honor Australians on this day of remembrance including ALL of our own community Worimi LALC Members & Elders who have done us proud. Uncle Allan Anderson: First served in Terrindak Garrison - Malacca Malaysia on the front line (between Malaysia & Singapore), before being sent off to Vietnam 8th Battalion Australian Infantry - completing 2yrs of National Service Uncle Arthur (Jim) Batt: 'The Fighting First' 1 Battalion (Inventory); landing in Vietnam 1965 as the first reinforcements for the injured. In a recent article he stated, "when i went back I didn't see one bomb crater and they were everywhere. they'd been turned into ponds or filled in". Then sitting in a Vietnamese restaurant; Jim happened across an ex-Viet Cong Officer and the men embraced. The night was filled with laughter, singing, dancing and crying and two men (once forced to be enemies) are now the best of friends. TODAY IS A DAY TO SAY THANK YOU! As we pause and reflect on the bravery, teamwork and endurance that Australians displayed & honour those who: lost their lives during battle; returned home wounded, ill or injured; have lost their lives in the years since;& still carry physical & emotional scars LEST WE FORGET!
