23.01.2022 Allergies! Allergies and hypersensitivities are a disorder of the immune system. The immune system is designed to defend the body against harmful pathogens. However, in our allergic pets, after exposure to certain stimuli or substances, the immune system overreacts, producing an undesirable immune response to certain allergens that would be considered harmless in a non-allergic animal. This allergic response, or hypersensitivity, can manifest as itchy, red and inflamed skin. ...There are four common allergic skin diseases that our pets can be diagnosed with. These are: -Flea Allergy Dermatitis -Atopic Dermatitis -Allergic Contact Dermatitis -Cutaneous adverse Food reaction Clinical signs for each of these diseases can be very similar and some of the time there can be an overlap of diseases, where your pet may have two concurrent allergies, for example Flea Allergic Dermatitis as well as Atopic dermatitis. A very thorough history given to your veterinarian will be important in helping to reach a diagnosis for your pet. While allergies are one of the most common presentations for skin disease there are many other diseases which can also cause itchy, red and inflamed skin. Along with taking a history and performing a clinical exam, your veterinarian may also perform skin tests to rule out these other causes. If you notice any of these symptoms in your dog, please contact us to make an appointment on 3482 4508.

22.01.2022 Congratulations to our September Puppy Preschool Graduates, Well done!!! What a fun and energetic group of puppies we had this round. Archie and Poppy became BFF's, Rhea became friends with everyone and practiced her manners, Dex told the big boys who was boss if they got too rowdy, Poppi shared the love with the puppies and especially loved all the humans and Quinn played well with everyone. Some of these puppies were a little apprehensive and shy when they first met but we...re soon playing like old friends at graduation. Puppy preschool is all about socialisation and we encourage the puppies to learn to make friends and interact in a safe environment. We wish all of you the very best with future training and look forward to seeing you back in clinic for desexing soon. The next round of Puppy Preschool is due to start in October with Nurse Becky. Please call the clinic on 34824508 to register your interest. Thanks...Angie

21.01.2022 This beautiful girl is Polly who was rushed in for an emergency caesarean and spay on Monday. Polly was heavily pregnant when she was surrendered to Miss Piggys Guinea Pig Lair last month. This week she went into labour and sadly gave birth to a stillborn. She then couldn't birth any more pups and was rushed into the clinic for an emergency C-Section and desexing. Unfortunately the other babies had been deceased for some time. Thankfully Polly herself is doing very well after her surgery and was able to go back to her carer the next day. Polly is such a sweet girl and we hope she finds a loving new home soon

19.01.2022 Lillies and Hydrangeas should be removed from in and around the house if you have a cat! They can be very toxic if ingested

18.01.2022 With the weather heating up and restrictions easing, many families with furry family members are getting back into nature and taking their dogs out with them. This raises the question of how to safely take your dog on a hike. https://bestforpet.com.au/so-youre-taking-your-pet-on-a-hi/

17.01.2022 Cat's need protection from parasites too! Even if your cat is always indoors, they may still be susceptible to parasites.

17.01.2022 Spring is upon us and baby birds are learning to fly So what should you do if you find a baby bird? Is the bird a nestling or a fledgling?... Does the bird have feathers? If not, or if it has only fluffy down, then it is a nestling, and needs help straight away, as it cannot keep itself warm. If you find a nestling, please take it to a vet or bring it in to the RSPCA as soon as possible. Do you know what to do if you see a fledgling? The best thing to do is to leave the bird alone. Most of the time their parents will be around keeping it safe and watching it as it hops around or sits on the ground. It can take a baby bird up to 2 weeks to learn how to fly. If you think the bird is in danger there are a few things you can do to protect it. Put your cat or dog inside the house so they can’t get the bird. You can place it in an ice-cream bucket or small open box and place it in a tree or shrub if safe to do so but avoiding contact is best. If the bird has been injured you can bring it to your closest vet for treatment. Native birds will be checked over by the vet and passed onto a wildlife carer if they are well enough for rehabilitation. Download or print this RSPCA baby bird rescue guide and follow these steps to help you determine the best way to handle the situation.

12.01.2022 As temperatures soar, a common issue that all caring pet owners should be aware of is heatstroke (also known as heat stress). IT REQUIRES URGENT TREATMENT Be aware of the symptoms and look out for the signs in your pet. These include: - Panting which increases as heatstroke progresses - Drooling, salivating - Agitation, restlessness - Very red or pale gums - Bright red tongue - Increased heart rate - Breathing distress - Vomiting Diarrhea (possibly with blood) - Signs of mental confusion, delirium - Dizziness, staggering - Lethargy, weakness - Muscle tremors - Seizures - Collapsing and lying down - Little to no urine production - Coma If you suspect your pet has heatstroke or they are showing signs of heatstroke: Take your pet to the nearest Veterinarian immediately. 11.01.2022 50 eggs in one day!? Avoid infestation! Did you know fleas are the most common parasite in the world? Perhaps not a surprise when adult fleas can lay up to 50 eggs a day which can quickly cause an infestation in your home.

11.01.2022 Today's patient of the day is Barney the Golden Retriever. This handsome old man visited us today to have surgery on an Aural Haematoma. Aural haematoma's usually occur as a result of local irritation to some part of the ear. When something irritates the ear canal, a dog is likely to respond by scratching or shaking the head. Excessive shaking causes blood vessels to break, resulting in bleeding.... Despite his sore ear, Barney was all smiles and loved all the attention during his stay.

09.01.2022 Our beloved pets are not only at risk of fleas, but also worms. Did you know a female roundworm can produce over 10,000 eggs a day? That is more eggs every day than there are dots in this picture.

09.01.2022 We'll reveal the answer to this tricky 'Who Am I' video tomorrow!

08.01.2022 During the First World War, red poppies were among the first plants to spring up in the devastated battlefields of northern France and Belgium. We continue to use the poppy today as a symbol of remembrance for those who have been lost in the line of duty. Lest we forget

08.01.2022 Things are heating up! Remember that our pet's paws are sensitive to heat the same way our feet are! If you're unsure if the pavement is too hot to walk on, put your hand to the pavement for five seconds, if it's too hot for you, it's too hot for your dog!

Read the below article from Animal Poisons Centre for more information.

04.01.2022 Let's talk Health Checks! Many of us put off a visit to the doctor until we are already ill. While a regular checkup is a wise idea for all of us, it’s absolutely vital for our pets. Animals obviously can’t always let us know when they are feeling under the weather though they may exhibit some signs which owners should look out for which may indicate something is wrong, such as being off their food, moving abnormally, panting, vocalising, vomiting, being quiet or lethargi...c etc (talk to your vet for advice). It’s up to us to help keep them healthy and happy with some basic precautions. What a health check involves Your vet will assess your dog thoroughly at a checkup to look for any signs of illness or other problems. He or she will generally start by weighing your dog, and will check their body condition, skin and fur, eyes and ears, teeth and mouth, and feel around the body, limbs and tail for any potential issues. The vet may look for fleas or other parasites and will administer vaccinations if due. Where teeth exhibit tartar, your vet may recommend a dental procedure. It’s a good idea to have a chat about any concerns you might have. If the vet feels there may be an issue, he or she would generally suggest further testing. Depending on the potential problem, this might involve a blood test or xray. General health maintenance A healthy diet and regular exercise are a great foundation for good health. Speak to us about the dog’s current food intake and level of exercise. If your dog is lacking in nutrition, your vet may recommend some dietary changes. It’s advisable for every pet owner to get to know the basics of health care and what signs to watch for that might indicate a problem. To book your pet in for a health check, contact us on 3482 4508.
