25.01.2022 Key steps for property protection
25.01.2022 "Hot and windy days will increase the fire risk and this will continue to be monitored closely. Higher grass fuel loads can increase fire danger by increasing the intensity of grass fires. All other factors being equal, this increase of the intensity makes the fires hotter, more dangerous, and harder to put out. As a result, above normal fire potential is expected for the predominantly grassland areas on and west of the Divide. In these areas, there is a high risk of high intensity grass fires that could impact communities this season." https://www.bnhcrc.com.au/hazardnotes/85

16.01.2022 Smoke and power lines? If you intend to have a pile burn anywhere near a power line read on...... The combination of dense smoke and hot gases generated by a ...fire directly under or near a high voltage transmission line can create a conductive path that increases the potential for a ‘flashover’. Flashovers are potentially life threatening to a person standing in the near vicinity of the flashover (much like when lightning strikes the ground near a person). Flashovers can also cause damage to nearby equipment and the transmission line, and can cause possible interruptions to power supply to homes and industry. As part of our training in the RFS, we are taught to stay at least 25 metres away from power lines if we are in smoke or flames. Keep your pile burns well away from power lines. There’s no second chances....... See more

14.01.2022 Keeping your street number clearly visible and thinking about automatically locked gates during times of emergency are tasks that are included in reviewing your Bush Fire Survival Plan. Why not take some family time this arvo to have a yarn about these and as many possible Plan B, C, D ad infinitum that your combined imaginations can produce. Can actually be a fun activity for the whole family with some cool drinks and lots of paper, colouring pencils and remembering to include the pets!!
14.01.2022 Congratulations to the volunteer members who served over the past twelve months and those who have taken the commitment to serve the next year for our neighbours at NSW RFS - Wallaroo Rural Fire Brigade

12.01.2022 Fire Danger Ratings in Southern Ranges (our area) forThursday and Friday currently stand at Very High. Spend some time this arvo and Wednesday going over your Bush Fire Survival Plan. What's that? You haven't done it yet?? Then have a sit down yarn with all the family tonight and work out just how you all would cope in as many different situations you can think of... including having visitors, or no-one at all being at home. For those who have done your plan, have a practice and see just how long it takes you to pack the car and leave, or if staying to protect, to set up the pumps and hoses, collect all your PPC and gather your string mops and buckets etc.

11.01.2022 Often when we attempt to alert residents about the possibility of danger during the Bush Fire Period we are met with the rebuttal "But there is no 'bushland' near us, only grassland and paddocks"! Grass fires are just as lethal as bush fires - possibly more so as so many people seem to be complacent to the danger. Please, prepare or revise your Bush Fire Survival Plan and rehearse it - often. Help us help you.

07.01.2022 The Bush Fire Danger Period will offically start on the 1st October 2020 for the Southern Tablelands Zone (Goulburn Mulwaree, Upper Lachlan & Yass Shire Council... areas). If you intend to continue undertaking burning activities you will need a permit, as well as notifying your neighbours and the fire control centre - failure to do so, can result in a substantial fine being issued. 06.01.2022 At this stage the local Fire Danger Rating for tomorrow stands at Very High. Although we do not have a Total Fire Ban for our district, please remain safe and vigilant. Report any sightings of fire immediately to Triple Zero (000).
06.01.2022 Hazard reduction (HR) burns are helpful in reducing the amount of ground fuel available, helping to reduce the risk and impact of bushfires on our communities. There are many planned HR burns over the winter break, so here are some handy tips to help you prepare: Keep doors and windows closed to prevent smoke from entering your home Keep outdoor furniture under cover and retract pool covers to prevent any possible ember burns Remove washing from clotheslines... Ensure pets have a protected area Slow down where visibility has been reduced, and follow the instructions of any NSW RFS crews and/or traffic control in the area Keep updated through ‘Fires Near Me’ Most importantly, please do not investigate smoke sightings (e.g. do not drive down a bush track) or go sightseeing in areas where HR burns are being conducted. If you see smoke, please enquire to your local RFS Fire Control Station, and only report to Triple Zero (000) if you see flame without RFS crews about. Some tips to help you prepare: Local residents should keep doors and windows closed to prevent smoke entering homes. Keep outdoor furniture under cover to prevent ember burns. Retract pool covers to prevent ember damage Sightseers must keep away from burns for their own safety Never fly drones or Remote Piloted Aircraft near bush fires or hazard reductions, where aircraft may be operating. Penalties apply. For more information, including planned HR burns, visit the NSW Rural Fire Service web site www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/hr and https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/fire.../hazard-reductions. (Thank you to Hornsby/Ku-ring-Gai RFS for the useful tips and Back Creek RFS Brigade for sharing! ) See more
05.01.2022 From drought and fire to La Niña: understand Australia's climate in 2020 with our Annual Climate Statement. 2020 was Australia's fourth-warmest year on reco...rd. For the country as a whole, rainfall was close to average but there was considerable variation between regions. The year began with much of the country in drought, and with record bushfire weather and smoke. This was soon followed by flooding. But it wasn't as extreme as 2019, which was Australia's hottest and driest year on record. Learn more in our blog: http://ow.ly/tqTv50D4QBD
03.01.2022 Fact: Your safest option is to leave early. A bush fire can be a terrifying situation, intense heat and flames will make you tire quickly, it will be difficult ...to see and breathe. You may become confused or disorientated. Powerlines and fallen trees can block roads and make driving dangerous. It’s always better to leave early, before the fire arrives. Visit myfireplan.com.au and make a bush fire survival plan, it will help you make important decisions like when to leave or what you need to be prepared to stay. #getreadyweekend
03.01.2022 We are already receiving questions regarding what are the rules regarding fires during the Bush Fire Danger Period. This link takes you to a Quick Facts sheet: https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au//Lighting-A-Fire-Quick-Facts-A3
03.01.2022 Do not hesitate to call 000 (Triple Zero) if you see a fire, as every fire is a real emergency. Please watch this video about reporting a fire or any other emergency. Yes it was made for children, but the information is just as relevant for adults.
02.01.2022 THESE ARE NEW! Are you up to date with the newest change? This brings about a National warning system with all our States using the same icons, terminology and meanings.
02.01.2022 Last night your brigade conducted their Annual General Meeting. It was a slightly different occasion this year as it was announced we were mentioned in the Commissioner's Commendations, reference page 8 in the document below.
