21.01.2022 Some of my girls pre kidding
20.01.2022 It’s Reigning Alpine Goats A lot can happen in a short time. I had spent far too much time on Facebook in the quiet time prior to kidding. This of course meant ...I hadn’t prepared well. Last minute rushes are not unusual for me. We also had 320ml (almost 13 inches) of rain for August so it was wet wet wet. During kidding my only wet weather boots failed me and I lost my sole (soul). In a moment of quick thinking I grabbed rubber bands to hold my soul together. This work amazingly. Then low and behold the other boot decided to also push my limits by joining its’ pair and lose its’ sole - more rubber bands to the rescue. Kidding looked imminent with Annabelle and Lily having huge udders. This of course gave me quite a few sleepless nights and just having Nanna naps whenever I could. Then I decided to rest and my 2.30am alarm gets me up to check on goats. No I don’t have an alarm clock. It’s an inbuilt one. I just drink lots before going to bed. All is quiet. Good - more sleep but I’m awake. I draw a picture not in my mind but on canvas. I didn’t really have kidding dates as the 5 month old buck was running with the herd for 2 weeks and I wasn’t really sure how many would kid but I assumed five. Lesson - Never assume anything. There were 8. I love surprises and Ebony gave me one with twins. I took Ebony to the buck just 2 months ago because she was in season. She was kidding me of course. No wonder she was grumpy and wouldn’t stand for him. I hope you forgive me Ebony. Another Lesson. Annabelle and Lily’s udders expanded to capacity. Lily is a big framed doe and takes having ‘big boobs’ in her stride whereas Annabelle is a smaller goat. Her kids must’ve positioned themselves badly for it was hard for her to walk comfortably with her big udder. I know exactly how these two girls feel for I was endowed with somewhat large breasts and when I gave birth at just 18 I wasn’t given the opportunity to feed my daughter until the next day and my engorged breasts were more painful than birthing. Take it from me big boobs are NOT great for those with them whether you’re human or animal and overfilled is painful. I decided the watched pot does in fact take longer to boil so I slept through the night. On awakening another surprise was Jewel my 22 month old Pure Togg who had twins all licked by the time of my arrival. Yet another surprise next morning was my 8 year old pure Togg Pippa who had delivered a doe. Pippa then had afterbirth so I assumed just a single. When I returned she had delivered a second. Lesson - Never assume anything. I had no idea Pippa was in kid until Two week’s earlier. Her udder didn’t fill up until the night before kidding. Same applied to the two Alpine girls I had bought. I never suspected they were even in labour as their udders hadn’t filled. They certainly have milk now. Never assume anything!! Dawn, the Alpine first kidder needed help. She was a big heavy doe but didn’t soften much. Her first kid was sideways. There was hardly any room inside of her to turn the kid. I ended up pulling him by his rump as I couldn’t manoeuvre his back legs. The second and third kids also badly presented. I was just grateful all three bucks survived. Annabelle and Lily both kidded on the same day without help and both are feeding their offspring. Wowee also kidded shortly after Annabelle and helped clean Annabelle’s babies first. Wowee had 3 boys. Unfortunately the first was tail first and died before I could get him out. I tried desperately to resuscitate him but it wasn’t to be. I hardly ever lose kids at birthing so I was upset. He is now composting in my strawberry pot. Kidding was a tiring but rewarding time. There were tears and joy. One of my beautiful 8 month old kids died which left me heartbroken for I loved Trixie LaBella. I was more heartbroken for Trixie as I felt I failed to care for her properly through my tiredness. This I have to learn to live with. This was a very hard lesson for me. Ebony tried to die on me. I stayed with her two nights and nursed her back to health. I gave her hydralite icypoles every two hours to keep her alive. We weathered a huge storm with intense winds while I was nursing Ebony. We lost electricity supply for a day. How the goatshed roof stayed in tact was a miracle and so was Ebony’s recovery. I looked into her weary loving eyes and prayed for her. I didn’t want to look in the goatshed next morning but there she was standing. I burst into tears and felt gratitude that my prayers had been answered. She is now feeding her twins again after having no milk or eating for three days. I think I lost a little weight myself and managed to get an ear infection so I’m a bit more ragged than pre-kidding. The best part is watching the kids frolicking around and I know it’s all worth it. I have 18 beautiful Alpine/French Alpine kids (USA genetics). 12 bucks and 6 does all to the same 75% Alpine Sire. The Mothers are all different breeds of excellent quality with great udders, good milk production and ease of handmilking . I have concluded that no matter which breed the Mother is the Alpine goes beautifully with them all. If anyone is interested in any of my Alpine kids let me know on here or email [email protected] I do not have Messenger so don’t private message me. The kids range from 37.5% to 75% Alpine. Each Mother will keep and rear at least one kid for I want them to feel like Mothers. Thank you if you read all of my writings without a beautiful picture. I took only a few photos for most of the time my phone had a flat battery. The best pictures were the ones I’ve saved in my mind.
17.01.2022 Kids just want to have fun!! I don’t want to grow up.
13.01.2022 ‘If you’re happy and you know it wag your tail’. Annabelle with her 37.5% Alpine kids. The doe kid on the left I named ‘Bellezza’ which is Beauty in Italian. I need a name for her buck kid. Any suggestions
12.01.2022 Chameleon goats (In the tree) I bought as kids from Margie Fraser back 5 or so years ago. They were Anglo Nubian/British Aline crosses. The hybrid vigour from ...cross breeding made them strong goats. They were excellent hand milking goats with decent sized teats and great milk flow They were also great Mothers and their kids were strong from the moment of birth. See more
