25.01.2022 First one for the season
24.01.2022 Ok so Josh has done the course and is all confident ,well now we will see
24.01.2022 Turpentine is very well budded and if your bees arent swarming by the time this flowers, they will be going out the door once they get onto this, should start breaking in the next few weeks. I added a picture of the trunk and full tree and buds for easier identification

22.01.2022 Going to make nucs 160klms east of Dubbo
21.01.2022 Lophostemon Confertus is starting to flower on the lower country, a fickle tree at best but capable of huge honey flows if it feels like it. Its a difficult tree to see bees on as they hover slowly around the flowers and spend alot of time at individual flowers as the can collect alot of nectar from each flower also they only work it early morning and late afternoon as being a larger open flower the nectar dries off the flowers quicjly. At the moment trees are very noticeable because the trunks have a pinkish colour to them due to the growth.....and its name for us normal folk is Brush Box
21.01.2022 Not a bad place to start the day
21.01.2022 A guy called Murray Charlton taught me queen rearing and I tell ppl he used to sell queen cells and ship them all over just in little eskies and in sawdust and in those days the cells were sent by bus (yes I am old, I know) anyways when I tell ppl this they act surprised and think to themselves, Richard is finally loosing it as cells are soft and would be no good, but finally I have proof.Last Saturday we drove to within 16klm of Victoria with cells packed in a incubator and made up nucs and put our cells in on tuesday, some nucs were loaded Wednesday afternoon netted and then driven home thursday and unloaded. This morning we checked them and here are the cells just hatching and my senility is intact
20.01.2022 Flooded gum is kicking off on the northern rivers of NSW which will be a bonus for ppl wanting to chase it. In most areas it will give a good slow flow of a darker honey and also large amounts of yellow pollen and bees will pack the brood box with pollen and honey. The way I work it is as bees fill I over super and put a hive mat between the full and empty super, doing this lets the bees come up and start filling the new super and then retreat back under the hive mat at night... to cluster, it also saves placing a empty box over the brood nest and making the bees have to warm that large area. So once the over super is 1/2 to 3/4 full the supers can be reversed and the full one taken. Its always good to think that heat requires energy and energy comes from the bees making it which requires honey and pollen and so the more heat needed the more honey and pollen are used. Also when looking for buds the buds are not on the ends of the branches they are actually back amongst the foliage and can be harder to see See more
20.01.2022 Something for ppl trying to get a grasp on trees, inside the yellow are Grey Ironbarks and the colour of the leaves at this time of year tells it all, the colour shows that are covered in new growth and what has followed that is bud. At this time of year that ironbark will be showing small fingers of bud and should flower in early November . In the next pic you can see more ironbarks on the hill in a line

17.01.2022 I am hearing and talking to lots of people who are getting ripped off when buying nucs and paying big dollars for them and when getting home finding what they have recieved is far from what they were promised and paid for. This has obviously been exacerbated by the huge interest in beekeeping with unscrupulous people now seeing a quick buck to be made and also inexperienced beekeepers thinking that making a nucs is as simple as whacking 4/5 frames in a box and advertising. Al...so to blame are people willing to buy a nuc from anybody and not going to a reputable beekeeper with sufficient experience to supply them with a quality product. The first thing to consider is price, the old saying " if you pay peanuts you get monkeys" is very relevent for this, I see prices from $350 down so without getting into a price debate I wouldnt pay less the $220 and with that price I expect top quality and with recourse within reason if I wasnt happy. Some things I would suggest before you part with my money I will list here 1. Look in the nuc before pickup and expect min 2 full frames of brood that being 2 frames sealed brood , larvea AND eggs also honey AND pollen, if there is any reluctance to not giving you a inspection would immediately raise concerns. 2 Make sure its not a swarm they have collected and now trying flog off paying good money I would expect a established nuc and not frames thrown together a few days before 3 Ask the age of the queen and if its from a reputable queen breeder and not a self reared queen, yes there might be nothing wrong with a self reared queen but if I am paying good coin I want every chance that this nuc is a winner. 4 Question the seller about their experience and is this a one-off or do they sell nucs regularly and if in doubt ask for a contact who they have sold to before. 5 Dont pick the nuc up in the middle of the day unless its a cold or raining. If its locked up and gets heat stressed if it doesnt die from overheating it will be susceptible to disease, preferably if I was picking it up from their yard I would have them lock it up after I got there and yes you will lose some bees but they are old bees and will die soon anyway but it will ensure the hive hasnt been locked up for hours before you get there and is also shows it a working hive bringing in pollen , we havent locked bees up when moving them for at least 30yrs and if we need to move during the day we net them. 6 If its not a corflute box ask if the timber has been treated, again paying top dollar you want the gear to last. I felt compelled to write this as its sad people are getting ripped off and this is becoming more common and will only get worse. See more
15.01.2022 "1250 Optus Stadiums are knocked down and bowled over every year in WA!" Western Australia has the second-highest rate of primary deforestation in the count...ry and the native forest timber industry is operating at a financial loss to the state. These south west forests are now worth more standing thanks to the hard work of hundreds of beekeepers like Mikey Cernotta and forest-based tourism, which already supports thousands of local jobs in WA. Native forests help make rain and protecting them from logging is also an important climate solution that has the potential to prevent 40-60 million tonnes of CO2 from being emitted over 10-years. The WA Forest Alliance Forests for Life Plan will create more than 3000 jobs and includes establishing a World Class Timber industry through Farm Forestry and Landcare, growing 40,000 hectares of high value, fast-growing trees for saw logs within existing farming land. Email your local MP and the WA Premier and let them know you support the Forests For Life plan: https://www.cleanstate.org.au/email-mark Follow WA Forest Alliance Pemberton Honey BICWA and get involved. #ForestsForLife #StopTheChop
12.01.2022 This is something I see on FB all the time and its something that will make a big difference in time. When putting your boxes together please go that little bit further and nail/screw or staple your boxes not only in the ends but from the sides, it stops the box going out of shape and stretching the joints and if you drop a box full of bees and honey the box will have a big chance of surviving even though you might not after the multitude of stings
12.01.2022 Yesterday Niall and Stone from Flow Hive popped around to get some footage of what we do and it will end up on the Flow Hive site
11.01.2022 Bees hate march flys as much as I do

10.01.2022 A big thanks to Carl and Johno Hampson of Hampson Honey 300 nucs done and dusted in 2 days
09.01.2022 Love grafting of new plastic frames that have been run through the waxing machine
06.01.2022 I see on FB lots of people catching swarms and then having them leave, a great tip is if you can get a frame of white larvae and place it in the box you are going to put your swarm in, the idea here is that the bees will start feeding the larvae and feel like they are home and settle there. This is not always succesful as some still leave but if they stay leave them there until dark if possible and then move them to your preferred spot
03.01.2022 It’s not just beekeepers who should be concerned about keeping Australia’s honey bee population safe from varroa mite. Crop pollination is a multi-million dol...lar industry responsible for ensuring much of Australia’s fruits, vegetables and nuts make it to harvest and to our tables. Apples, peaches, almonds and pears are just some Australian produce that relies on bees. We’re currently responding to an incursion of varroa mites found on a nest of feral Asian honey bees at the Townsville port in April 2020. If you’re in the Townsville area, you can help ensure Australia maintains its status as the only inhabited continent in the world to be free of varroa mite by reporting any suspect Asian honey bees to Biosecurity Queensland on 13 25 23.
