13.01.2022 In this virtual ‘Meet the Artist’, by Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Art Centre artist Gabriela Soelkner provides insights into her practice and the exhibition 'ROCK FACE' now on display at the Tweed Regional Gallery. You can see the artist at work in the Gallery foyer this Sunday 15 November. Drop in and have a chat with Gabriela from 10.00am 4.00pm. This exhibition represents my relationship with the landscape beneath Wollumbin (Mount Warning); the giant boulde...rs that surround my home and studio, and the hidden rocks I have found when walking in remote areas of the forest over the last thirty eight years. Their shape and textured surfaces all provide information as I draw and paint the contrast between my own human story, short as it is, and the vast age of stone. The ability of stone to endure is reassuring as the timescales in which it exits are beyond our imagining, beyond our limited life cycle. The discovery of a 3.3 million year-old child’s fossilised skeleton in Ethiopia, Africa inspired the works beneath the summit, headlands and rock face. It is easy to work that archaeological find into my story here at the base of a remnant of an extinct, ancient shield volcano that erupted 23 million years ago. It fits the narrative I am most interested in: the permanence of stone and the ephemeral nature of our human relationships both past and present. - Gabriela Soelkner Gabriela Soelkner completed a three year visual arts drawing certificate at TAFE Murwillumbah in 1993 and has since exhibited in various art awards and exhibitions. She currently works from her creek studio next to Wollumbin National Park, the source of much of her inspiration. 'ROCK FACE’ is currently on display until Sunday 28 February. @gabrielasoelkner #gabrielasoelkner #meetheartist #rockface #tweedregionalgallery #thetweed #keepregionalartsalive Repost from @tweedregionalgallery

10.01.2022 Opening Friday 27 November, this new exhibition by Melbourne-based artist Kenny Pittock titled 'Planes, Trains and Bubble'O Bills' focuses on ideas around being... stuck in one place, and the ways in which we keep ourselves mentally active during the times we’re unable to be physically active. In previous years this meant finding ways to pass the time during our daily commuting, such as drawing on the train. More recently though this has branched out into our homes, in ways such as getting a sourdough starter, looking for missing puzzle pieces, and cutting our own fringe. If we can't get on an actual plane, at least we still have Aeroplane jelly! With travel plans on hold, ideas around staying safe and happy are playfully explored through a large series of drawings and fun ceramic sculpture, in an optimistic exhibition that aims to bring some smiles to all who experience it. On display until Sunday 14 March 2021. Image: @kennypittock 'Melted Bubble'O Bill' 2020, acrylic on ceramic, 26 x 3 x 25cm. Image courtesy the artist #tweedregionalgallery
09.01.2022 This Sunday 15 November, 10am4pm DST, watch artist Gabriela Soelkner at work in the Gallery Foyer and be inspired to try the mixed media processes demonstrated.... Her exhibition 'ROCK FACE' opens at Tweed Regional Gallery 13 November. While reflecting on the permanency of a rock face and the temporary nature of human life, I have combined my interests in anthropology, archaeology and geology into an exhibition of work revealing my relationship stories about the land and the people that have created intimacy in my life and art practice. - Gabriela Soelkner Image: @gabrielasoelkner 'sister tracks' 2019 #tweedregionalgallery
