About the HDT VK Group 3 The VK Group 3 was a very desirable car with a high level of specification. The new bumpers allowed a new styling arrangement which saw a deeper front air dam and rear bar, but the fly through rear deck spoiler was gone and in its place was a more subtle item hanging off the back of the boot. The bonnet bulge and wind splitters remained, but this time were only as an option. The new 16 inch Aeros with their flush fitting covers were standard as was the long range tank and M21 4 speed. Power was a healthy 177kws. and passed down to the 3.08 LSD differential. The interior featured the full spec berlina dash which featured all the necessary guages, while the interior trim also came in for considerable attention. Scheel seats were fitted as standard and offered great support for the driver. The velour and Herringbone trim was carried over into the door trims and rear headreats were also fitted as standard. When the Series II was introduced, the engine capacity had changed to 4987cc due to the changes required to the V8 for Hologation and racing purposes, but the cars also featured the Group As more rounded grille, a deeper front bar and a graphic equaliser mounted in the centre console. Other subtle differences included replacing the SS sticker at the front with a small HDT badge and the change to the slide type door locks. The Moonraker as it was named after the famous movie of the time was designed and built in the Ford Australia Design Centre by Herb Grasse and the entire design team to be used as a promotional vehicle for the James Bond movie of the same name screening in Australia at the time and to help showcase the newly arrived XD series in the Ford showrooms in 1979. After completing the car show circuit the Moonraker was eventually given away on the Don Lane show in 1979 and was won by a family in Northern Melbourne. The Moonraker is based on a factory 351 Automatic XD Fairmont Ghia and it is still retaining all of its original matching numbers running gear and is showing 180,000 original Klms. Mc Grath Holden in Liverpool NSW Full ground up nut and bolt restoration was started in 2017 with the vehicle being fully stripped and sent to panel beater for small rust repairs that were all professionally removed and new sections welded in. the van was sandblasted in certain sections although the main roof and rear panel sections were hand stripped to avoid damaging or warping the perfectly straight body lines. whilst the vehicle was in the body shop all parts removed where all cleaned and reconditioned to new. all original bolts an metal components were sent to zinc platers and acid dipped and zinced plated. bumper bars where re-chromed Reassembly was started in 2018, everything with the regards to suspension and brakes was fully replaced and reconditioned. engine whilst in excellent condition was overhauled and hang ons where replaced or reconditioned unfortunately engine is not matching number to production report, But is QT coded as report. electrical system was fully checked and tested by auto electrician. Interior had new seat covers new door trims and roof lining replaced instrument panel was reconditioned. Whilst the vehicle was not fitted with power steering from factory this was fitted to make the vehicle more pleasurable to drive. The Moonraker as it was named after the famous movie of the time was designed and built in the Ford Australia Design Centre by Herb Grasse and the entire design team to be used as a promotional vehicle for the James Bond movie of the same name screening in Australia at the time and to help showcase the newly arrived XD series in the Ford showrooms in 1979. After completing the car show circuit the Moonraker was eventually given away on the Don Lane show in 1979 and was won by a family in Northern Melbourne. The Moonraker is based on a factory 351 Automatic XD Fairmont Ghia and it is still retaining all of its original matching numbers running gear and is showing 180,000 original Klms.
