24.01.2022 What Does a Healthy Spine Look Like? To understand scoliosis, you first need to know what a healthy spine looks like. There are four regions in your spine: Cervical spine: This is your neck, which begins at the base of your skull. It contains seven small spinal bones (called vertebrae), which doctors label C1 to C7 (the "C" means cervical). The numbers one to seven indicate the level of the vertebrae. C1 is closest to your skull, while C7 is closest to your chest.... Thoracic spine: Your mid-back has 12 vertebrae that are labeled T1 to T12 (the "T" means thoracic). Vertebrae in your thoracic spine connect to your ribs, making this part of your spine relatively stiff and stable. Your thoracic spine doesn't move as much as the other regions of your spine. Lumbar spine: In your low back, you have five vertebrae that are labeled L1 to L5 (the "L" means lumbar). These vertebrae are your largest and strongest vertebrae, responsible for carrying a lot of your body's weight. The lumbar vertebrae are also your last "true" vertebrae; down from this region, your vertebrae are fused. In fact, L5 may even be fused with part of your sacrum. Sacrum and coccyx: The sacrum has five vertebrae that usually fuse by adulthood to form one bone. The coccyxcommonly known as your tail bonehas four (but sometimes five) fused vertebrae. What Are the Most Common Scoliosis Symptoms? Scoliosis symptoms can vary widely, depending on the severity of the curves. In mild cases, symptoms may be purely cosmetic and can include: Visible difference in hip and shoulder height One or both hips are raised or noticeably high Uneven shoulders one or both shoulder blades may stick out Head is not centered right above the pelvis Asymmetry between rib cage heights on either side. Waistline appears uneven Changes in the appearance or texture of the skin overlying the spine changes, such as dimples, hairy patches, or color abnormalities. The entire body leans toward one side More serious cases of scoliosis may cause: Back pain Inability to stand upright Leg pain, numbness, and/or weakness due to radiculopathy, or pressure on nerves in the lumbar spine Height loss in adults Bowel or bladder dysfunction in more severe cases

23.01.2022 How to Remedy Thoracolumbar Fascia Back & Spine Pain When you think of pain in the back, the thoracolumbar fascia is not likely the first guess as to what is causing the discomfort and pain you are experiencing. The thoracolumbar fascia is a very important tissue of the body as it is needed for coordinated movement, plus it is an attachment site and a connective element for a number of muscles and joints of the lower and upper back. Therefore, it is not uncommon for pain to o...ccur in the middle or lower back regions stemming from thoracolumbar fascia injury. Thoracolumbar Fascia Back Pain Causes The thoracolumbar fascia is a tough membrane composed of three layers that cover the deep muscles beneath the back, covering the thoracic spine. Muscles are also enclosed within the layers. This fascia tissue crosses the entire low-back area and it connects the shoulder to the opposite hip. This transitional area between the upper and lower half of the body allows forces to be transferred as needed for athletic and daily movement. Besides enabling movement, the thoracolumbar fascia is also important for stability and sensory roles. Some tasks can take a toll on the fascia, resulting in thoracolumbar fascia back pain or a loss of mobility of this tissue over time. Excessive strain, overuse, repetitive stress or having poor posture when lifting an object or squatting can bring on thoracolumbar pain in the low-, mid- or upper back. This injury is relatively common among those who lift moderately heavy loads on a regular basis at work, such as construction workers or farmers. It is also seen among athletes, especially those who lift weights without proper form. BraceAbility offers a lifting back belt that lessens the strain on your back, eases existing back pain, prevents further damage, and encourages proper lifting techniques (listed on the right). Check out our blog post for more tips on proper heavy lifting techniques How Can I Treat Thoracolumbar Fascia Back Pain? 1.Maintain a healthy weight 2.Practice good posture 3.Take frequent breaks for stretching and movement when sitting for long periods of time 4.Warm up and stretch before exercising or heavy lifting 5.Strengthen your core muscles 6.Wear a back brace to help apply compression and support to the spine 7.Use massage therapy to increase the blood flow to the injured area.

20.01.2022 MUSCLES THAT MOVE THE LOWER JAW In anatomical terminology, chewing is called mastication. Muscles involved in chewing must be able to exert enough pressure to bite through and then chew food before it is swallowed. The masseter muscle is the main muscle used for chewing because it elevates the mandible (lower jaw) to close the mouth, and it is assisted by the temporalis muscle, which retracts the mandible. You can feel the temporalis move by putting your fingers to your tem...ple as you chew. Although the masseter and temporalis are responsible for elevating and closing the jaw to break food into digestible pieces, the medial pterygoi and lateral pterygoid muscles provide assistance in chewing and moving food within the mouth. DID YOU KNOW? The strongest muscle based on its weight is the masseter. With all muscles of the jaw working together it can close the teeth with a force as great as 55 pounds (25 kilograms) on the incisors or 200 pounds (90.7 kilograms) on the molars.

19.01.2022 When is a Pot Belly Stomach Not a Pot Belly Stomach? A tight psoas can give the appearance of having a pot belly stomach that is not necessarily about being or having too much fat. A while back in the land of Facebook there were a bunch of images going around about how we carry the fat on our bodiesare you an apple, or a pear, or a triangle etc.? When the tight psoas messes with the belly it is actually a space issue rather that a fat issue. Have you ever noticed someone who... is very skinny and yet they have what looks to be a pot belly stomach? When I teach my Psoas Release Party! workshops I illustrate this point by taking hold of my spare tire and showing the jiggle that occurs. When this look of a pot belly stomach is actually about a tight psoas there is no fat to take hold ofthe belly is hard and fairly rigid. This is one of the first diagnostic cues that I take note of when meeting new clients. It is one of the easy notes I can make on the road to helping people figure out what is going on with them. The psoas major muscle connects the legs to the spine attaching at the back half of the inner thigh and along the lumbar spine. A long and happy psoas moves down from the spine and curls around the back of the pelvic bowl before making its way forward, down and back to attach on the inner thigh bone. A host of organs and muscles sit in front of the psoas. A tight psoas pulls forward off the back of the pelvis and takes everything in front of it along for the ride. This includes the small and large intestines which is why a tight psoas can mess with our digestion in a big way. This can happen when one or both of the psoas are tight. This environment of the psoas and presence of what looks like pot belly stomach is one of the best reasons for doing psoas release work, especially Constructive Rest. Laying flat on the back in this position allows the psoas to fall back towards its natural position deep in the bowl of the pelvis and can create a better space for the psoas, abdominal organs and muscles to live in harmony.

17.01.2022 Fibromyalgia is the name for a group of conditions that causes generalised pain and muscle stiffness in many parts of the body. Other common symptoms are extreme tiredness and sleeping poorly. Some people also feel vague and confused at times. Fibromyalgia is common and affects around 2-5% of the population, mainly young to middle-aged women. What are the symptoms of fibromyalgia?... The most common symptoms of fibromyalgia are: pain in many different muscles and bones tenderness or stiffness in the muscles or bones, lasting for at least 3 months extreme tiredness difficulties in sleeping Other symptoms and related conditions may include: problems with concentration and memory anxiety, depression or emotional distress irritable bowel syndrome headaches numbness and tingling in the arms and legs People with fibromyalgia often find their symptoms change over time. The symptoms may be worse during times of psychological, social or physical stress. What causes fibromyalgia? The cause of fibromyalgia is not completely understood, but it seems that fibromyalgia is a problem with the brain, rather than the muscles and bones. For some reason, the brain of someone with fibromyalgia is very sensitive to certain things. It feels them as pain, where other people would not. This does not mean that the pain is not real simply that the pain originates in the brain, not the muscle and bone. Fibromyalgia is thought to be related to other sensitivity syndromes, such as chronic fatigue syndrome, multiple chemical sensitivities and irritable bowel syndrome.

14.01.2022 What is reiki? Reiki is a Japanese energy healing technique. The predominate form of reiki practiced throughout the world today, also known as Usui reiki, was created by Dr. Mikao Usui in the early 20th century. Its a complementary or alternative health approach. Reiki does not directly cure diseases or illnesses. Instead, its used as a way to manage symptoms and improve general well-being. During a reiki session, the practitioner places their hands either directly on yo...u or just above you to bring about healing. The belief is that the practitioner is able to stimulate your bodys natural healing abilities. Read on to learn more about the benefits and side effects of reiki, and what to expect from a reiki session. 5 Health benefits of reiki 1. Relieves pain, anxiety, and fatigue 2. Treats depression 3. Enhances quality of life 4. Boosts mood 5. May improve some symptoms and conditions Reiki may also be used to treat: headache tension insomnia nausea The relaxation response that happens with Reiki may benefit these symptoms. However, specific research is needed to determine the efficacy of reiki for the treatment of these symptoms and conditions. Are there risks or side effects? Reiki is non-invasive and thought to be safeTrusted Source. It doesnt have any known harmful side effects. For those with a past trauma, lying quietly in a dim room with someone close to you might be uncomfortable. Reiki is not intended to replace any doctor-approved treatment plan.
13.01.2022 HEADACHES AND MYODURAL BRIDGES Recent anatomical studies have found that the deep suboccipital (top of the neck) muscles are connected to the dura matter (the covering of the spinal cord) by ligaments. Pulling on a suboccipital muscle moves the dura matter, in cadavers. The suboccipital muscles often atrophy (waste away) in headache sufferers.... Can headaches be affected by using Active Release Techniques (ART) on the the suboccipital muscles: superior oblique, inferior oblique, rectus capitis posterior major and minor? The suboccipital muscles are important little muscles which control fine neuromuscular control of the head. Recent studies have added to our knowledge of the possible connections between headaches and the myodural bridges: Enix et al did microscopic evaluations to confirm that ligaments called the myodural bridges emanate from the suboccipital muscle bellies, and attach to the dura mater in 75% of specimens. These myodural bridges have a hypothetical role in human homeostasis, and they may contribute to certain neuropathological conditions as well. The presence of a neural component within the myodural bridges suggests that they may serve another function aside from simply anchoring the muscles to the dura mater. Such a connection may be involved in monitoring dural tension and may also play a role in certain cervicogenic pathologies (neck pain and headaches). They noted that manual traction of the rectus major in cadavers resulted in gross dural movement from the spinal root level of the axis (C2) to the spinal root level of the first thoracic vertebra. Fernández-de-Las-Peñas found that the greater the headache intensity, duration or frequency, the smaller the cross sectional area of the rectus minor and rectus major muscles. He also foundthat there was a correlation between hyper-tenderness and atrophy of the rectus minor. In these cases pressing on the rectus minor reproduced the patients headaches. The rectus minor was also found to have atrophied by Hallgren, in chronic head pain sufferers. He proposed a theory that whiplash could lead to nerve damage which causes the rectus minor to atrophy. His photo in the picture shows the myodural bridge. ART is a hands-on soft tissue treatment of ligaments, muscles, tendons, and nerves. It provides a quick way to make a tight muscle loose, as well as treating conditions such as: tennis elbow, frozen shoulder, shoulder tendinitis, and plantar fasciitis. The technique involves the therapist putting pressure on a tissue, while the patient stretches to move the tissue slowly out from under the contact. The treatment hurts a bit, but only in a way that makes the patient know it is working. The technique works by increasing the nervous systems tolerance to stretch.

06.01.2022 Allergic Rhinitis (Hay Fever) Allergic rhinitis (commonly known as hay fever), affects around 18% of people (children and adults) in Australia and New Zealand. Despite its common name, allergic rhinitis is not caused by hay and does not result in fever. It is caused by the nose and/or eyes coming into contact with environmental allergens, such as pollens, dust mite, moulds and animal dander. People who are sensitive to these allergens may then experience one or more of the ...following symptoms: Immediate signs or symptoms Runny nose. Itchy nose. Sneezing. Itchy, watery eyes. Obstructive signs or symptoms Congested nose. Snoring. Some of these symptoms may be similar to those caused by infection (such as colds and flu). However, allergy symptoms tend to persist, unless they are treated correctly. Symptoms range from mild to moderate (does not affect day to day function), to severe (affects day to day function). Symptoms may occur in a particular season (usually due to allergies to grass, weed or tree pollens), or are persistent and present all year round (usually caused by allergies to house dust mites, moulds or animal dander). It is important to note that allergic rhinitis is not caused by a food allergy. Complications of allergic rhinitis may include: Sleep disturbance. Daytime tiredness. Headaches. Poor concentration. Recurrent ear infections in children. Recurrent sinus infections in adults. Asthma which is more difficult to control.* * Some people with allergic rhinitis also have asthma. Better control of allergic rhinitis has been shown to result in better asthma control in both adults and children. Untreated allergic rhinitis may also increase the risk of developing asthma. Treatments for allergic rhinitis You can treat your allergic rhinitis in several ways. These include medications, as well as home remedies and possibly alternative medicines. Talk to your doctor before trying any new treatment measure for allergic rhinitis.

04.01.2022 MASSAGE THERAPY FOR MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS (MS) Benefits - Pain, Stress Reduction Multiple sclerosis is a condition where there is inflammation of the myelin tissue covering the nerves. This inflammation varies; it may worsen and then gradually subside. After the inflammatory response, there is formation of scar tissue, which hinders the neurological function of the patient. The spinal cord, brain stem and cranial nerves are commonly affected.... Massage therapy is very beneficial in patients suffering from multiple sclerosis. Massage therapy helps in reducing stress and alleviates the symptoms of MS such as pain and loss of function. The massage therapy done in MS patients depends upon the intensity of the disease and its stage. Massage therapy should be avoided in the acute stage where there is exacerbation of the MS, as it aggravates the pain and discomfort. Deep tissue massage does wonders in relaxing the tense and knotted muscles and helps in decreasing the pain. Trigger point therapy is also beneficial in MS. Swedish massage therapy comprises of gentle massage and is advised in the initial or acute stage, as even slight pressure causes pain to the patient. The biggest problem which the patients suffering from MS face is muscle and joint stiffness. This greatly restricts their functionality and mobility. Massage therapy helps by stimulating the blood flow to these body parts which in turn speeds up the healing process and increases flexibility. Massage therapy also helps in arresting the onslaught of the disease and improves the prognosis. In serious cases, weakness of the muscles can also cause atrophy which further leads to deterioration in the patients condition. In such a case, massage therapy helps in increasing the blood flow and oxygenation to affected muscles and also helps in regaining health and energy.

03.01.2022 DISLOCATION OF RIBS Rib dislocation (slipping rib syndrome) is the displacement of a costal cartilage from the sternun - dislocation of a sternocostal joint or the displacement of the interchondral joints. Rib dislocations are common in body contact sports; complications may result from pressure on or damage to nearby nerves, vessels, and muscles. Displacement of interchondral joints usually occurs unilaterally and involves ribs 8, 9, and 10. Trauma sufficient to displace these joints often injures underlying structures, such as the diaphragm and/or liver, causing severe pain, particularly during deep inspiratory movements. The injury produces a lump-like deformity at the displacement site.

02.01.2022 PLANTAR FASCIITIS SELF-TREATMENT Regular, gentle stretching of your Achilles tendon and plantar fascia may help to ease your symptoms. This is because most pe...ople with plantar fasciitis have a slight tightness of their Achilles tendon. If this is the case, it tends to pull at the back of your heel and has a knock-on effect of keeping your plantar fascia tight. Also, when you are asleep overnight, your plantar fascia tends to tighten up (which is why it is usually most painful first thing in the morning). The aim of these exercises is to loosen up the tendons and fascia gently above and below your heel. 1. Soleus Stretch With both knees apart and your toes facing forward, lean into the wall until you feel the stretch in your lower calf. Hold for 30 seconds and repeat 3 times. 2. Step Stretch Stand with your toes on a step and your heels off the edge. Slowly lower your heels down, hold for 15 seconds, and then lift your heels to their starting position. You can either do both feet at the same time, or one foot at a time. Repeat five times. 3. Roll Stretch Using a mini roll, roll it back and forth from your toes to your heels. Alternatively you can use a tennis ball or a glass bottle. 4. Plantar Fascia Massage Using two fingers, apply small circular friction to any tight knots or lumps in the plantar fascia. The pressure should be deep, but not so much that you tighten up with pain. 5. Elastic Strap Stretch Sit on the floor with your legs straight in from of you. Take a stretch strap and place it around your toes. Gently pull the strap towards you. Hold for 15-30 seconds, then release. Repeat 3 times. 6. Toe Stretch Place just toes up on the wall with the ball of the foot and heel on the ground. Lean into the wall slowly until stretch is felt. Hold for 30 seconds and repeat 3 times. Can plantar fasciitis be prevented? There are certain things that you can do to try to prevent plantar fasciitis, especially if you have had it before. These include: Regularly changing training shoes used for running or walking Wearing shoes with good cushioning in the heels and good arch support Losing weight if you are overweight Regularly stretching the plantar fascia and Achilles tendon, especially before exercise Avoiding exercising on hard surfaces

02.01.2022 Pulled calf muscle A pulled calf muscle refers to strains within the two muscles in the lower back of your leg that make up your calf. Theyre called the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles. When a strain occurs, muscle fibers are torn to some degree. A pulled calf muscle happens when your internal muscles are overstretched from exercise. This is a common injury, especially among athletes and runners. Pulled calf muscles may be chronic from long-term injury or acute from brief o...verpulling. Pulled calf muscle symptoms Symptoms of a pulled calf muscle can depend on the severity of the injury. A mild strain can leave you with pain and feelings of pulling within the lower half of your leg. You can still walk with a mild strain, but it may be uncomfortable. Other signs of a pulled calf muscle include: mild swelling redness bruising inability to stand up on the ball of your foot A severe pull in your calf muscles can leave you with feelings of sharp pain. It can also affect your mobility, making you unable to walk. Pulled calf muscle recovery time In total, it usually takes up to three days for a pulled calf muscle to start feeling better. But a full recovery may take up to six weeks, according to Oxford University Hospitals. Severe swelling can make any pain and discomfort last a bit longer. Walking on recovering calf muscles can also increase recovery time. If you have to have surgery for a severe pull in your calf muscle, it may take several weeks or months before you fully recover.
