12.01.2022 It is with great love & gratitude that we present Rick & Ruth Steven with Honorary Life Membership They have tirelessly supported MDWA’s efforts over the last 14 years by raising awareness of SMA, as well as more than $500,000. Their association began with us in 2007 after their son Spencer was sadly taken from them due to SMA1 & they started Team Spencer in his honour. The money they have raised has gone towards critical items including the purchase of cough assist machi...nes & sending community members to an interstate SMA conference. In April 2012 the first TEAM Spencer Scholarship for SMA Research was granted, which funded 3 PhD student scholarships. It has also funded the NMC nurse at PCH to allow Spinraza to be administered to at least 12 young patients at a time when this would otherwise not have been possible & has literally saved lives. 11.01.2022 This incredible artwork by the talented (& kind) Rory Charles was auctioned off for $11,000 at our recent Kailis Club event In Rorys words It depicts our creation of spirit, the Wandjina. The first Wandjina called Idjair lived in the Milky Way & his eldest son Wallungunder created the Earth & all life upon it. He then created the first human beings called the Gyorn Gyorn people. Other Wandjinas came & gave the Gyorn Gyorn people their culture, their language & laws to live by. Today if people listen & do what they are told then the Wandjina are happy & they will make sure the cyclone rains come each summer to renew the landscape so life upon it is abundant. Today three tribes of people are responsible for carrying on the Wandjina rock art traditions; they are the Worrorra, Ngarinyin & the Wunambul people of the Kimberley.

10.01.2022 Sometimes it's hard to find the right words to express the loss of someone, so we're sharing the beautiful ones written by our CEO, Hayley. It's in honour of John Hollingshead, who played such an important part in MDWA's history and present. "Tonight a candle burns in memory of a beautiful gentleman who touched my heart and will forever inspire me to be a better person. Many may not know I belong to a Rotary Club. And after 5 years at my club, they are like family to me! We g...ather together weekly to give our time and efforts for others. And today we lost one of our greats, one of the worlds best. At 92 he passed gently into the world beyond, his beautiful wife by his side, and his family and friends forever heartbroken. Ive cried many tears today, and I too remain heartbroken! I never ever thought at 43 that Id meet an 87 year old, who would creep into my heart and inspire and guide me in so many ways! I have so much to say about this beautiful man and I honestly feel like Ive lost a grandparent! Someone who inspired me to always show up, to know my privilege and to ALWAYS do more for others less fortunate! I just loved catching up with him at breakfasts and so often Id visit him and Helen for cup of tea at their home. And Id spend hours sitting listening and absorbing his wonderful stories, and his strict instruction of how things should be! In 1971 he became the first employee of Muscular Dystrophy WA and in 1972 he became a Rotarian... yes the year I was born!!! He gave so much of himself to others. Im sharing this with you all because beautiful people should be celebrated and honored. John challenged me to do lots. He taught me that no one is ever too old to do new things, that I should be brave and push the limits. And I know this world is a better place because of him. John Hollingshead, I celebrate your life. You will live on in my heart forever - Hayley " See more

03.01.2022 COMMUNITY: Although the festive season is a happy & joyous time to connect with family & friends for many people, often financial issues, family conflict & loneliness make it stressful & isolating for others. If this is how it feels for you, reach out to us for a chat or some counselling. We're here for you

02.01.2022 Shout out to Rebecca Evans for being appointed the new Exec Chair for Youth Disability Advocacy Network - YDAN the other week. She's a total go-getter & we couldn't think of a better person to take on this role

02.01.2022 We’re thrilled to see the work of Professors Sue Fletcher & Steve Wilton alongside Emeritus Prof. Byron Kakulas AO, founder of MDWA, showcased in the new WA Museum Boola Bardip. Prof. Fletcher & Wilton worked together in developing exon therapies for Duchenne MD (DMD) & pioneered antisense oligomer induced exon skipping to overcome the dystrophin gene mutation. Prof. Kakulas offered our first hope for a cure when he realised complete & total regeneration of skeletal muscle throughout the body was possible - a discovery he made in quokkas suffering full body paralysis. This was of huge significance to human muscle disease research, such as neuromuscular conditions. Their work has been life-changing for many & we hope having it displayed in a public forum will help to raise awareness of MD in the wider community

02.01.2022 Today's date references the 79 exons of the dystrophin gene - which is why it's World Duchenne Awareness Day. It's one of the most common forms of childhood MD & affects 1 in 3,500 live male births. Let's bring some more awareness around this condition by sharing

02.01.2022 There are a lot of special "Days" this week but this one is super important! International Day of People with Disability is the day to be reminded of the need to raise awareness, understanding & acceptance of people living with a disability. What better way to do this than by sharing Rebecca Evans’s story that is part of a series put together by Disability WA that’s running all week

02.01.2022 You won't find any of the MDWA team in the office today as we are celebrating at our end of year lunch! We promise not to Dilly Dally too much & will be back on our emails tomorrow

01.01.2022 Today marks the start of Carers Week. We'd be lost without all of the mums, dads, partners, siblings & strangers-turned-family who are by our community's side. Life wouldn't be the same without you, so THANK YOU
