16.01.2022 Did you know Rockhampton once had a Prime Minister? A Prime Minister from Rockhampton: Frank & Vera Forde and their children Mary, Mercia, Gerard & Clare, in Sydney, 1940. Photo: National Archives of Australia] One hundred years ago, in 1914, Frank Forde (1890-1983), then an electrical engineer, was transferred to Rockhampton, where with his good looks and friendly manner he polished his social and debating skills and became a leading figure in the Australian Workers Union and other organisations. He won the Federal seat of Capricornia in 1922 and was minister for the army between 1941 and 1946. Following the death of John Curtin, Forde was briefly Prime Minister from 6 to 13 July 1945.
