10.01.2022 "Where there is smoke there is fire" Firefighters are required to work in environments that are filled with smoke, toxic gasses and a lack of oxygen. To survive in such conditions firefighters wear breathing apparatus to ensure their protection. The most visible by-product of fire is smoke and a toxic atmosphere, which is less visible is also a major concern for firefighters.... Great developments over the last 100 years mean that today’s breathing apparatus protects our firefighters from unknown respiratory hazards, elevated temperatures, depleted oxygen levels, toxic atmospheres and smoke. Breathing apparatus allows firefighters to work in conditions where it would be otherwise impossible to breath. This week's Museum blog focuses upon this development. To read the full story follow this link: https://www.museumoffire.net/blog-1 Linking in with this week's blog is the photo our team selected as our #FlashbackFriday for today. This photograph was taken at Headquarters Fire Station in 1905. As you can see from this photograph breathing apparatus has come a very long way over the last 100 years! 06.01.2022 The 1938 Leyland FT3 Lioness pumper is one of the rarer motor appliances in the Museum’s vehicle collection. Although Leyland Motors Ltd was a major builder of fire engines in the UK and actively competed with Dennis Bros and Merryweather & Sons for local and export markets, they did not have a large presence in Australia. Between 1910 and 1945, Leyland Motors Ltd. sold only seven pumpers. Just three were purchased by the NSW Fire Brigades. This week's #FlashbackFriday feat...ures this beautiful Leyland from the Museum's collection. The Leyland is pictured here at a NSWFB drill in Botany, c. 1950. For more on this appliance please visit our website for the full blog: https://www.museumoffire.net//the-leyland-ft3-lioness-pump #History #FireEngine #Museum #MuseumBlog #Firefighters Fire and Rescue NSW
