11.01.2022 Today marks the 23rd anniversary of National Sorry Day a day to remember the past policies which resulted in the forced removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families and Country. One year after the Bringing Them Home: Report of the National Inquiry into the Separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children from Their Families was tabled in Parliament, the first National Sorry Day was held on 26 May 1998. Whole families and communit...ies suffered significant trauma due to these policies and were often subjected to harsh living conditions and abusive treatment within institutions and work placements. These children were not allowed to continue their cultural practices and have pride in their heritage, and many were taught that being Indigenous was something to be ashamed of. Tonight, we will light up the Royal Exhibition Building and Immigration Museum purple as we pause and reflect on the pain and injustice members of the Stolen Generations, their families and community have faced. Museums Victoria recognises the strength and resilience of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. https://fal.cn/3fDez
