10.01.2022 BENEFITS OF MUSIC/ PIANO LESSONS FOR CHILDREN By Eugenia Some parents feel that their children might be not musical or talented enough to learn music so they avoid music classes. But from my experience there are many benefits that children will gain by learning a musical instrument.... 1. Playing an instrument needs the engagement of both hemispheres of the brain, practicing mental and fine motor skills at the same time. That means it is an excellent brain training activity. You may see your child getting better at maths. 2. Takes a great deal of attention. The eyes see the notes, the brain recognises it, gives the direction to the fingers of both hands to play, right notes, right rhythm, and wait till you need your legs on the pedal too! The progress might seem slow but your attention span will get really wide. 3. It will make your child listen better. Because that’s the first sense that music cultivates: the ability to listen and observe the sound. 4. Music cultivates the soul. Your child might get the opportunity to learn who is Mozart, Beethoven and Bach, might listen to a few music pieces composed by them and might be able to recognise that this song is the Rondo alla Turca ( and not the Bluey song according to my four year old son) 5. Children will gain confidence. I remember in the past I had students that their parents described them as low confident kids that struggled at school. And it was the most amazing thing to see the glow in their eyes when they finally were able to play their first notes and feel like achieving something important. 6. Music is fun. Whether you child is blessed with skill or not, whether he will play one or a hundred piano pieces, or he will know just how to be an active listener, taking music lessons is a great experience with benefits that last through life.
