25.01.2022 Now that I am not taking on general guitar repairs, I have the opportunity to do those really in depth guitar jobs that I specialize in Here is a vintage 60-70 yr old guitar that has had all the ebony inside the neck fail and crack, so we not only remove the neck we then break the neck down into parts to remove the bad wood before rebuilding it with fresh ebony Not a job for the faint of heart... 1 neck removed from body 2 truss rod is pushing centre section of wood out of neck 3 Remove head plate, remove frets, remove fretboard etc 4 Neck split in half 5 one side of the neck ebony wood showing cracks in the wood itself, 6 other side showing big cracks through the ebony wood Just got to remove the ebony trim strips, make new ebony strips, glue the new strips and the existing neck back together, reshape the neck, fit the fretboard, fit the headplate, refret it, do a neck reset and then into paint, just a little bit of work :)

25.01.2022 Liquid Nails is not recommended on guitars :), :). This old Maton is in for a resto, it was liquid Nailed into a display cabinet, that is an hr of scraping so far Edited and added... It was done in good faith, the owner bought it back in 1973, it was damaged and he was informed it was beyond repair, His family mounted it into a cabinet with the intention of it being an art piece never to play again. 30 Yrs later I am making it back into a functional guitar for them again

24.01.2022 Everyone in the guitar que moves up as one more is finished, Minus some final buffing after a week of drying Here is the guitar que, no 1 now finished 1) Rogers Ovation (late 90’s) New flame maple top, refinish teal with black burst, neck reset, setup (finished)... 2) Hawaiian coconut ukulele (late 90’s) New mahogany top, repair shattered sides, manufacture neck block, neck reset, setup (in progress) 3) Levin Jazz Guitar (early 60s) Collapsed Neck, neck to be deconstructed, new ebony strips on re-assembly, neck reset, cracks in top, refret, binding repairs, carbon fibre rods (in progress) 4) Maton acoustic (late 60’s) Cracked (shattered) top repairs, new inner braces, neck reset, new back, refret? 5) Gibson SG (Late 90’s) split body in half, add wood to establish les paul thickness, new ebony fretboard, stainless frets, carbon fibre rods, respray jet black 6) Gibson les paul (2000) new fretboard, reprofile neck, carbon fibre inserts, custom inlays with stainless frets, custom bridge and saddles, 7) Taylor 812ce (2011) replace top, replace maple binding, repair split sides, uv refinish sides and top, Gibson LP (late 90s) shattered headstock rebuild, new headplate, bent switches replace, bent saddle ferrules, side body damage See more

24.01.2022 Body replaced under warranty, simply the best warranty IMO around the world,. Cutting the old body up still hurts

22.01.2022 Here is some more instruments that were not in yesterdays little walk around video. Reason we say no to guitar repairs dec/ jan and mid feb, we just do not have the bench space

22.01.2022 Just more painting, this jig utilises a Vacuum clamp to hold it in place Nice Taylor

22.01.2022 My Facebook posts occassionally pay off, got this job as a result off. This Bassoon was new $11995 It had been living broken in a storage room as it was ""unrepairable"" that was in 2017. I got it last week... A post had broken out part of the body tube and subsequent repairs had apparently failed. Pic 2 shows some of the cracks that run down the body away from the post plug I start this photo tute off, with the body tube glued and repaired and a wooden curved plug grafted into the original post location to maximize long grain strength. With a chisel we carve away the bulk of the plug, then sand it smooth with the body, drill and thread wood for post replacement, fit post, fit key and then some finish work Plays great.. :)

20.01.2022 $6995 is the cost of this clarinet. The owner did not even have it long enough to unwrap the mouthpiece before they snapped it in half. Buffet Clarinets are made with a super tight tolerance on the parts, a little bit of swelling on the wood locked the joint and they tried to seperate and broke it.... Our repair start to finish, machining the broken tenon away, manufacturing a new tenon out of a solid piece of ebony and then grafting / reaming / polishing and making it all work and play again Came into the shop for repair yesterday, going out today

17.01.2022 One of the most important things I have in my shop is a soldering workspace Here is the workspace in use today, these are some of the jobs completed today 1 Bench and universal jig I made... 2 Guitar nut vice used to hold trumpet 2nd slide to solder on nub 3 Bassoon crook, having a piece of nickel silver stamped out to patch a hole 4 Trumpet getting finger hook re-attached 5 Bassoon broken key being hard soldered 6 Vice swap outs holding nut vices 7 Removing spring lug from junker key to customers key 8 Trumpet getting a brace fitted 9 Sax having foot re-attached for one of the keyguard braces See more

17.01.2022 Sometimes you spend a day just working on one type of instrument. Going to be dreaming about flutes tonight, so many flute servicing and repairs, from muramatsus to ashtons, finished.

16.01.2022 After 2 months of Woodwind and Brasswind, started to clear the school and manufacturers warranty jobs. That is a lot of strings for a mornings work :), in fact 13 sets to be exact End of this month we are taking some guitar repairs back on

11.01.2022 Sunday and clearing out some of the christmas workload, due to covid lockdown last week, we are a week or two behind. Today 9 trombones finished straightened, serviced, 11 to fo and thats a wrap for the day.

11.01.2022 Next to the front of the que, a coconut shell ukelele for repair / rebuild Love the weird stuff, every day is different

10.01.2022 Because I am not taking any more guitar work on until next year, I have over the last week just been doing a photo of one finished guitar that leaves each day, its my count down mechanism :) Here is a gibson with a broken neck that has gone back home

10.01.2022 Another one leaves the shop Laminated neck blow out Glued Finished... Assembled See more

10.01.2022 Sunday afternoon and we are still working, crazy busy, Also an excuse to include a photo of his and hers

09.01.2022 Paint booth being used for the first time That was a long 4 months too not have one, hats off to those that manage to spray guitars without one. Two broken headstocks being refinished, gibsons of course

09.01.2022 Just a note stating the obvious, we are closed this week. Only saying as we have had a few "are you open enquiries", we are Non essential, stores are closed, schools are closed, we are closed. Enjoy the down time, ... Here is a link to WA gov for update https://www.wa.gov.au//covid-19-coronavirus-what-you-can-a

09.01.2022 Not perfect, I am pretty happy with the repair none the less Before to After

08.01.2022 Taking pride in ones work is important IMO. Pic 1 is not how I recommend gluing internally, taking a few extra minutes cleaning up can make a huge difference. The glue volume is so great its even glued a string end into it Pic 2, My example... This guitar has come in for cracked x brace and three large top cracks, the final picture shows the internally fitted cleat with no glue around it, neat clean and tidy

07.01.2022 Another long term one leaves the shop (couple of months due to no paint booth) The Body on this Ibanez cracked at the sustainiac through holes, so plugged them up with ebony inserts and locally repainted the area 1 Gluing ebony inserts into the body... 2 Inserts glued in and scraped to hieght 3 Functionally check guitar and inserts will support circuit board 4 First coat done and sanded back 5 Repainted and drying 6 Buffed and re-assembled See more

07.01.2022 A quick que jumper, this one I did a massive rebuild on it less than 6 weeks ago, new fretboard, assymetrical neck sand, new custom inlays, twin carbon fibre rods, black respray. Unfortunatley someone tripped over it whilst it was on a stand, so in for a fast broken headstock repair, lots of little pieces of wood to be reglued back in, hence a graft repair All holding fine, just some paintwork needed

06.01.2022 Backlog of Guitars Finally done, such a nice feeling These are some fresh in the shop guitars 1 Maton getting a new pickup system fitted, done and gone... 2 Martin getting a fret level and setup, done and gone 3/4 Another Martin thats been dropped, started today hopefully finished soon See more

06.01.2022 Finishing the day out with nothing less than painting :) This Martin is having some clear over the sides after some crack repairs have been done It is center held and balanced, a couple of safety straps loosely added to the bridge and headstock just in case

05.01.2022 Folks, I know everyone wants to ask questions and speak to me directly when they ring up, but... I have to have repair time otherwise I will be on the phone all day Nicole tries her best to answer questions for you and fends people off to allow me to continue repairing, its not personal. Here is a quick snap shot of todays work schedule so you may understand, this is a typical day, comments are on each picture

05.01.2022 I scrapped my old paint booth 4 months ago as to much work was required to make it comply with regulations again. Almost every weekend in the last 4 months has been dedicated to altering the workshop to accomodate new booth and relocation of equipment. Our old paint booth is now a storage room.... Booth arrived on friday, some assembly required Hopefully wired and extracted in next couple of weeks

05.01.2022 Even simple things are steps within steps This saxophone is having all new leather pads fitted to it After pulling it apart and removing all the old pads... 1 We size up new pads that fit the keycups 2 Select an appropriate sized resonator 3 Assemble pad resonator and rivet 4 Press and stake the rivet so its permanently fitted 5 Glue pad into keycup 6 Fit all keys back on and start floating regulating and sealing

05.01.2022 I must be getting old :), I really really do not like doing djembe drums, they are so hard on the hands Natural skins sound fantastic tuned up, but..... Left - New skin fitted and drying, Right - this morning all finished

05.01.2022 More Painting photos Just in case someone missed my early statement, I love my new paint booth.......

05.01.2022 I know, I posted a photo of new paint booth yesterday, but here is the next day, painting again. Different jig used for holding this ovations body Did I say, yay, I love new paint booth...

03.01.2022 And the que moves up one. This Cocunut ukelele is all back together 1 Oooooo, that is not a good start... 2 Part of the repair, grafting broken cocunut shell back to broken cocunut shell, and laminating up a neck block 3 Top view finished 4 Bottom view finished See more

02.01.2022 Sorry, No more guitar repairs being accepted until March 2021, I have 19 to clear before mid December Christmas school workload which is pre booked has started First 35 of approx 1000 to come in

02.01.2022 Why do repairs sometimes take long? answer - there are steps within steps Example this flute is in for a repad. Not only do we want it too play well, so we have to fix the mechanics of it and fit new pads that touch perfectly within half a thousandth of an inch, we also want it too look good, so whilst you may spend a coupe of hrs removing and refitting pads, you spend another hr just polishing it so it is a presentable product... 1 New pads fitted and regulated 2 close up of the keywork, tarnish all over the silver 3 Ragging ( polishing) the silver tarnish away 4 Nice shiny keys 5 Repeat for every key 6 Presentable product for customer

01.01.2022 Always get the big jobs, new this one was going to be no different :) 1 Broken neck removed 2 Heel repaired ready for painting 3 Neck reset carried out... 4 Fingerboard levelled 5 Refretted 6 Strung up test played - note: no pearls 7 Custom pearls made to replace ones lost during levelling 8 Machining fretboard to receive 9 Fitted pearls Some sanding and polishing and job done
