12.01.2022 In the early 80s, Radio 3AR, Older brother/sister to 3LO in Melbourne would have a monthly Sunday Experimental music afternoon where they would showcase local "serious" contemporary music composers. I had the pleasure of performing a few times and of course, hearing some very amazing music. Felix Werder was my teacher at the time and he and his colleagues put in a huge effort to organise the series, listen to the compositions and then to strike the critical blow of analysis to what had just been played. Wonderful experience, and quite a hidden pocket of developing artists.

12.01.2022 Mark Deutsch Oakland California This vibrational structure of this composition has a fascinating geometry and is one of the most otherworldly, haunted sounding ...configurations of tones I've ever heard. This six-note scale sounds a lot like the whole tone scale to my ear, though it's more like what my imagination hears whole tone sounding like if I found it more interesting and emotional. I haven't been able to find a precisely corresponding raga to these tones, though they are derived in a very "raga-like" manner and interestingly that can be achieved by either one of two processes. The mathematics are different but the results sonically are identical. The more hands-on practical approach is to tune the fifth harmonic of one string to the seventh of the second and then the scale will appear in the overtones of the first five and seven harmonics of each of those strings respectively. I am playing these harmonics quite a bit in this composition. The other way, which is more "correct", theoretically is based off the first two new harmonics of the fundamental and the same two harmonics off of the tri-tone. A tri-tone that is precisely a ratio of 64/45 or ten cents sharp of tempered. I get that this sounds very complicated and esoteric but the process is fascinating to me and the results are extremely evocative and not like anything one would achieve using a tempered, pianistic style tuning.
